Call me cynical, but I suspect that the scheduling of the park opening ceremony in the middle of a weekday has everything to do with Healy's preference for a low turnout.
He knows that the hardworking downtown folk of HP (as in those of who will be working during that time of day) see right through him and his corrupt cronies. I hope that those of you who do go will call him out on his shenanigans, and loudly boo this shameless leader of a council of crooks (minus Steve, of course).

So the park reopening ceremony will be tomorrow at noon. But, the park won't actually open until the weekend?
I'm confused.

By Jon Whiten ? May 25th, 2010
The renovation of Hamilton Park, which got started on April 30, 2009, is finally coming to a close with an official re-opening slated for Thursday, May 27 at noon. The nearly $3.2 million renovation includes a comprehensive subsurface drainage system; a new playground and ?sprayground? for children with separate toddler areas; two fenced dog runs, new Victorian-style decorative lighting; a community garden; new tennis, basketball and multi-use courts; and new benches, tables and drinking fountains. The city also renovated the gazebo in the center of the park. The daytime grand re-opening and ribbon cutting will reportedly be followed by live music at the Parkside Bistro on Erie Street beginning at 6 pm. http://www.jerseycityindependent.com/ ... icially-re-open-thursday/

i just moved to JC (as you can probably tell from my post count) and my initial thought on redoing Newark Ave should be that they need to kill the cars and make it a pedestrian only street (continue to allow the cross traffic at the intersections however)
if you've ever been down to Austin, TX on a fri/sat night, they shut down 6th st to all traffic and only allow pedestrians. do that on newark, and brick the street, allow bikes, etc that being said, itll never happen

well these vans are some what reliable and being smaller may be better for the environment and our health. nj transit should look into this for the non rush-hour. from what i understand these buses are illegal due to the lack of license and insurance not to mention they are not equipped for people with disabilities. my son has taken these buses and several times the bus was stopped by police and everyone had to get off.
also these drivers rent theses buses, last i heard several hundred dollars a day, that is why they hustle to make back their rental money, also they have to pay to use the route (notice on palisade and booream they stop and a man comes from a parked car to collect a few dollars, this happens every round trip). I find the buses that run from journal square to fairview are much nicer. i guess they have the proper licenses and insurance since they can go into the path.

There are 2 reasons for seatbelt laws:
1. Its a money maker and the government wants your money. 2. The education system is a failure because people are not taught to take care of themselves.

"Hamilton Park is 100% good to go. They will be holding their re-opening ceremony at Noon this Thursday (5/27/2010). I met with the PSE&G rep this morning and the final lights are being connected tomorrow. That is our final step, but even if that falls through, all safety issues have been met and the Park will be open to the public this weekend."

This is an interesting thread.
When I decided to move here for a job in downtown NYC I essentially took a protractor and drew a circle around where I would be working. I hate commuting but at the time could not afford Manhattan. Once I realized that living in the other boroughs would subject me to both NYC's firearms laws and an additional 4% income tax I know it was JC or Hoboken. I moved to a crappy studio in Paulus Hook but after a couple years found a nice apartment in an owner resident brownstone. The funny thing is that the 'hood has improved so much that my girlfriend doesn't feel entirely comfortable walking around in her normal attire. We could have worse problems....

Great to have you around as a resource -- look forward to seeing what you come up with for classes!

Upon arriving home from work the doorbell rang and I answered. I was caught off guard having just gotten off the phone with PSEG earlier in the day I thought they were sending by someone to talk about lowering my bill.
A guy claiming to be from a company called PALMCO (and who said he also talked to my neighbors upstairs and downstairs, who both just told me they did but didn't sign anything)...long story short. He said they would be the new suppliers for PSEG and my bill would go down 5%-20%. I signed and he gave me a pink sheet with all of my info on it about how my bill will be lower etc. But now, that I've had time to actually sit down and think, I believe I've made a mistake. A huge one on my part and extremely stupid. Has anyone else had PALMCO go door to door? Did you sign? Did you not? Basically, am I the only idiot here? Or is this legit?

I lived in Hoboken, alone and then with my husband, since 1984. We had a lovely apartment on Washington and third, but we were getting tired of the frat boy atmosphere (people throwing up in our doorway three times a week, sports bars galore, etc.) We looked around Hoboken to buy, but anything that we would even consider was $700,000 or more. An artist who we met took us up to the Heights and drove us around..I wouldn't say we fell in love, but we were intrigued. We found a place on Webster and put in a bid, which was accepted, and then I panicked. I was so sad to leave Hoboken, sure that I would never feel at home up here. I was so wrong...that was seven years ago, and I've never looked back. We have met the most interesting neighbors. It's like Mayberry here on our street...i always run into friends, and people stop by for coffee or to chat on the front porch. We love our house and our gorgeous, lush backyard. There are some drawbacks, of course (extremely loud neighbors across the backyard with thumping music sometimes) and there are hassles that one doesn't encounter in a more gentrified place (garbage on the street, indifferently timed public transportation, etc.) but we also have a lot of dedicated friends/neighbors who are working tirelessly to make the place better.

Jersey City cops: Man beaten senseless after parking spot dispute By Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal May 25, 2010, 5:20PM A 53-year-old Jersey City man was beaten senseless last night after he got into an argument over a parking spot near Journal Square, police told The Jersey Journal today. Officers witnessed part of the attack around 9:15 p.m. at Vroom Street and Bergen Avenue when they happened to drive past, police said. The Montgomery Street victim told police he was backing into a parking space on Vroom when a car pulled into it, front-end-first, on the one-way street, reports said. He said he pulled out of the spot but the other car did, too, so he parked there after all, reports said. The man said he was walking away when his attackers got out of the other car and began yelling at him over the parking spot, police said. They then tried to take his cell phone and chain, breaking both, reports said. Officers on patrol spotted the victim backed against the closed gate of a store where he was punched in the head until he collapsed and went into a fetal position, reports said. The officers activated the cruiser's siren but the assault continued until the cops displayed their badges, reports said, adding that by then the victim's face was swollen, his vision blurry and he was incoherent. An ambulance took the man to the Jersey City Medical Center where he said his right eye was "going dark," reports said. Cops arrested Ahmed Elgawly, 24, of Emerson Avenue, Mohamed M. Abdelaziz, 23, of St. Paul's Avenue, and Islam Elgawly, 20, of Vroom Street, charging them with robbery and aggravated assault, reports said. ****** from www.nj.com buy the Jersey Journal (you hipsters can spare the coins)

Two workers stuck on scaffold 17 stories above Washington Boulevard in Jersey City
By The Jersey Journal May 25, 2010, 3:35PM Google Maps480 Washington Boulevard in Downtown Jersey City, where two workers are stranded on a scaffold more than 150 feet above the street. Two workers, apparently window cleaners, are stranded 17 floors --- that's roughly 170 feet -- above Washington Boulevard in Jersey City. Jersey Journal reporter Michaelangelo Conte reports from the scene that the two men are stuck on a scaffold outside a window on the 17th floor of 480 Washington Boulevard, a 32-story glass office building on the corner of Sixth Street Downtown. The two men are huddled together at the right side of the scaffold. Jersey City Fire Director Armando Roman said rescue workers plan to attempt to cut a hole in one of the windows to bring the workers to safety. The scaffold is anchored to the roof 15 floors above, but apparently has malfunctioned and cannot be raised the 150 feet.

I'm probably one of those rare individuals that feel the need to turn my head to look when backing up, but I can't do it properly wearing a seat belt. So I take it off to back up. The car behind me waits (impatiently) while I fasten back up and press forward.... only because it's the law and I don't want to give any municipality the satisfaction of getting any more money out of me.
I hate cars that ding ding ding when I don't put the belt on fast enough. I hate cars that automatically lock me in. And I hate the new seat belt law that's using State (grant) money to pay for extra officers to give out tickets.

originally from maryland, but after graduating from monmouth university i lived at the shore for a year or two before moving in with a fellow classmate in JC who had already been living here for a few months. i was wooed by the fact that the rent was on par with what i'd paid in long branch and red bank and that i could do late nights in the city without having such a long trek home.
after following my roommate to JC, within a year i began dating a jersey-native brooklyner and lured my new boyfriend to JC as well. he was pretty impressed with the much lower rent and shockingly easier, cheaper, and shorter commute to his job on the west side. soon my roommate and i moved to a larger place so another girl friend relocating from new brunswick could join us, and two months ago (after spending dozens of nights on my futons) 4 long-time friends from college literally became my new neighbors. interesting side story: two years ago at easter dinner my boyfriend and i were shocked to learn that his dad grew up exactly next door to the house i lived in at the time. #242 and #244.
