A lot of the credit goes to June Jones and the Morris Canal Community Development Corporation. They're the ones who got the neighborhood involved and kept prodding the city, even before Healy. This is been a long time coming.

Re: Disruption Theory in Education

From an essay in The New Yorker about disruption:
Quote:
Innovation and disruption are ideas that originated in the arena of business but which have since been applied to arenas whose values and goals are remote from the values and goals of business. People aren?t disk drives. Public schools, colleges and universities, churches, museums, and many hospitals, all of which have been subjected to disruptive innovation, have revenues and expenses and infrastructures, but they aren?t industries in the same way that manufacturers of hard-disk drives or truck engines or drygoods are industries. Journalism isn?t an industry in that sense, either.

JERSEY CITY, N.J., May 9, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- On the heels of opening its first commercial exhibition and one of the largest galleries in the United States, Mana Contemporary today revealed plans for the opening of its newest development, the Mana Graffiti Museum. The museum will be the world's first permanent museum devoted to street art and will be located in a 100,000-square-foot former ice factory near the Holland Tunnel entrance.

Fulop's newsletter talks about a contest where people submit ideas for logos and tag lines and such. Does anyone know anything about this? There's nothing at the JCEDC site on that, at least not that I've found.

Quote:
I recently announced that the Jersey City Economic Development Corporation (JCEDC) is soliciting proposals from individuals and firms interested in assisting the JCEDC on a branding and marketing campaign of up to $1.2 million dollars. The goal is to position Jersey City as the best mid-size city in America. Half of the $1.2 million will be paid for through private partnerships. In addition to the Request For Proposal (RFP), the JCEDC is also asking residents to submit logo designs and tag lines as part of the branding contest. This campaign will help us refocus the image of Jersey City to the rest of the region, the nation and the world, expanding on how we are growing, providing opportunities for new young families and long-time residents. This campaign will highlight the diversity of our neighborhoods and underscore the attractions of our great city, showcasing everything that Jersey City has to offer. The complete RFP can be found at http://www.jcedc.org.

This spring, Mana plans to open a street-art museum in another three-building property near the Holland Tunnel. It will have ?the same curatorial vision and management? as the main art centre, which is headed by the artist and chief executive Eugene Lemay, says Mana?s vice president for strategy, Shai Baitel. The painter and graffiti artist Barry McGee is among those in talks to take part in the museum?s inaugural show.

The library has a very interesting aerial survey that was done back in 1964. Lots of gorgeous 8 by 11 glossies shot from the air. If you want to see the railroad yards in northern JC looked like before Newport when in, those photos will show you.

Mark Kleinman: "Christie gave (judging from the transcript) a great performance. But it just won?t wash. He has known for a month that the Executive Director of the Port Authority didn?t believe the ?traffic study? story and considered the lane closure outrageous and probably criminal, and that Baroni, Christie?s $291,00o-a-year patronage appointee at the Port Authority, responded by saying ?There can be no public discourse?: i.e., ?We need to cover this up.? So Christie?s pretense that he only learned about the falsity of that fairytale this week is laughable."

I saw the press conference, and it was a convincing performance. But there is this:

It's true that there is nothing (yet) to prove that Christie knew about this. However, common sense tell us that his aides and political advisors would not be acting so recklessly without his approval or a strong basis to believe he approved based on prior behavior.

. de Blasio?s postelection debut at the White House signaled that he may emerge as a leading national voice on the issues that animated his campaign. While a clutch of mayors gathered to meet with reporters after the meeting, it was Mr. de Blasio who spoke first, and most, as the others deferred to him.

He spoke of a movement beyond New York?s border that he hoped to tap. ?It?s clear something is happening around the country that the inequalities we?re facing are becoming just fundamentally unacceptable,? he said.

Don't know anything about the building, but as far as I know, the neighborhood's still Bergen Lafayette. Berry Lane is the name of the (now on hiatus) park that's being built there right off of, you guessed it, Berry Lane.

There are signs throughout the area that says "welcome to the Berry Lane neighborhood"

Must be rebranding in action.

If Manhattan audiences can go to Brooklyn, they can come here just as easily. They just have to get over the 'hump' of crossing a state line. Getting people in Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx to come here is different. And so, for that matter, is Staten Island.

This is a very good thing for the City to do.

"Nearly 40 percent of Jersey City residents are foreign born, compared to 21 percent statewide, while more than 52 percent speak a language other than English at home, according to U.S. Census figures. More than 70 languages are spoken in the households of students in the public-school system, Fulop said."
