I was tired and annoyed but all I did was cluck my tongue. I didn't even know anyone heard me and all of a sudden they start yelling "White bitch! Stupid white c*nt! Get a tan you f'ing cracker!" And they kept taunting me! I'm 5'2" and was by myself. I'm not going to go up against these idiots.

Wow. Seems like it might be the same couple.

We need Curtis Sliwa and his Hell's Angels to run security at these shopping centers. They did wonders for the Rolling Stones.

So, that's what your teahouse needs.

Tarts and strumpets and the very "kind, gentle, welcoming" staff Jersey City establishments are known for.

Yeah, liss54 & daphne, it sounds like a good idea. But keep in mind that part of Janam's success was that the tiny girl who owned/ran Janam was so sweet. Also, small businesses are very risky. But if you open, I'll go.

As far as the free wifi, that's fine as long as you find a way to monitor each persons usage and when you notice their cup is empty, inject a barrage of friendly reminder pop ups into their data stream. these could be subtle messages like "GOT TEA?", or "This is not the friggin library, BUY SOMETHING CHEAPASS!".

Yep. This is the concern I was getting at.

I live nearby. I would go if you're friendly to hours-long study sessions.

Janam was not. They did not have enough seating.

Otherwise, I might pop in from time-to-time.

One several occassions, I found Sweet Priscilla's food to be overpriced, underseasoned, and *not* vegetarian despite the labels. (I chomped my first piece of bacon in 15 yrs. Thanks, jerk!).

So, don't do that.

She's not my elected official. I'm in Stack's district.

I agree that electeds should not only walk in lockstep... but there's a time to fall behind the Governor, and for Hudson County Democrats, election season is that time. As an HCDO party apparatchik, she has a lot of learning to do. She can't honestly think Christie is better for her district, nevermind what Bayonne wants.

And as the Ledger editorial demonstrates... she's an unqualified joke who didn't deserve to inherit the position, and has done a few things to embarass her husband.

Also, I assume she was advised by Nia Gill and Ron Rice when she blocked the DeGise nomination for purely selfish reasons. When Gill and/or Rice blocked the Rabner nomination, they later gave way. But Gill and Rice are in even safer districts than Cunningham, so they can get away with playing politics, established as they are.

She also said she'd have a hard time stumping for the Gov.... in a heavily-contested election in a place friendly to Dem turnout. What a turncoat.

The guy who's always wearing khaki cargo shorts. Sometimes with sandals or crocs, sometimes with socks and running shoes, and sometimes with docksiders or penny loafers. He's usually wearing a white or pastel-colored polo shirt.

His hairstyle varies, but not too much. In the workaday world, he parts his hair to the right. On weekends, it's slightly tossled for that "not-yet-forty" look... even though he's at least forty!

What a kook!

No. It should be fairly clear that I did not write the article. I am Alan. That blog is owned and operated by Ian, who seems to have sole control of the links and content. He is the "I" who is witnessing his posts on his blog, as only he sees fit.

There is no personal motive for me to defend his summary, for his audience, of this under-the-radar story.

That said, knowing Ian's predilection for traffic and city planning, I did direct this issue to his attention. He has made his concerns plainly here and elsewhere.

See #27 and #37 above. Those posts also show how I know the sources, though attribution is not what you sought originally.

If you have concerns about journalistic chops - also a new issue being raised - or the fact that the Columbus Autobahn should be addressed by "legitimate" media, then I am not the target of your concern.

FOR WHAT?

1. This article is based on conversations with city planners.

2. Blogs are legitimate news sources, as is independent, web-based media such as The Jersey City Independent.

3. Local "traditional" media, such a newspapers, have often shown their business model to be broken... and unwilling/ unable to cover more than sports and petty crime.

My flight was on the runway at 815 when the OP posted. When I landed, I had several text mags and emails waiting about it. And other NJers and family here knew from CNN or radio. Most are from Hudson, Essex, Bergen, Passaic and so they're pretty attuned to corruption cases.

So, (1) Willthis turn the DiNardo funeral into a media circus? I hope not. (2) What pols would/could even attend? (3) What will Judge Gallipoli do with Jimmy King's suit of Nidia Lopez? He needs a plaintiff, and King priorities have quite shifted... (4) it's high time Judge Debevoise or Chesler in Newark take the reigns of the Party from local and county leaders. Unions have had their leadership seized under similar circumstances, though that would have NLRB implications as well as associational issues.

Back to the original point of the post ... I think this is great if this proposal goes through and is executed properly, poorer communities desperately need access to fresh produce to help combat the near-epidemic health crisis in this country. In an ideal world that produce would be organic/local/etc but that is not a financial possibility at a this time - given the state we're in access to any kind of affordable produce would be a step in the right direction. Too many people are dependent on junk food not only because it's cheap but also because there isn't much of an alternative.

Hopefully one day, via legislation and community action, we can make it so organic, local carrots are cheaper than a bag of chips but until that day there are smaller battles to fight. This is definitely a positive step.

Thanks. I think you well-summarized the public policy served by the proposal. Health crises and childhood obesity are of particular concern.

Of course, there will be the inevitable rancor about laissez-faire economics, market forces on downtown rents, and that buggiest of bears: foodstamps and WIC.

But all that doesn't add up to much: the short and long term costs of emergency room trips and poor nutrition are well with some spending on the front end. It's quite a simple Keynesian approach on this one, and can help push neighborhood and urban revitalization.

Bergen Hill, Lafayette, Greenville, The Heights... they have bigger problems and should be more vocal politically, demand more from the City, expect more from their community, and do more for themselves. But, that's quite a challenge. Unfortunately, they may speak, vote, expect, and do less as a result.Quote:
Alan, speaking only for myself and my family, we do vote. And considering only 20 or 30 % of all of Jersey City voters came out at the last very important city election, it seems many people have given up. But there is something that you may overlook: The "look who's doing the complaining" factor. I think a part of the problem is the city is just more responsive to certain sectors, that the attitude of "who pays more rent" also pervades the city's responses in some situations. It makes it easier to write off certain areas because everyone knows "they're all just - fill in the blank" and makes it easier overlook the decent folks of the area, after all "you know how they are". A true story for you: Many years ago there was a tenant interim lease program building on our block which developed "structural problems" The city gave the block association 2 options - either take a soup kitchen on the ground floor (there was - and is still - one 2 blocks away) and the "repairs" would be made or take a hole in the ground where the building used to stand. We protested against the soup kitchen, the tenants were removed, the building demolished and we ended up with the hole in the ground which was paved over with black top. It is difficult sometimes not to lose hope.
I think you've analyzed the scenario quite well, and your personal anecdote exemplifies the brokenness of the system. Voter turnout is low county-wide. Fortunately, there are reformers doing legal and advocacy work external to the political system, as well as reformists sentiments within both parties... believe it or not. But, their primary goal is not political action, but simply GOTV once per year. As to the "look who's doing the complaining" factor, there's something to that as well. Not every resident is as vocal or politically astute, but more importantly, not every voice... whether it navigates the channels as a sophisticate or not... is a voice City Hall will listen to. Down in 07302, in general I think folks think Fulop is their dude.

It seems English is not your first language. That's fine.

But, it makes me wonder why you use the term "Mongol."

Are you Chinese or Korean? Does"Mongol" represent some fierce, walled-off outside attacker?

It's not a word I hear being used alot. But, the word Mongoloid is an out-of-date for people who are East Asian, or an offensive term for people with mental handicaps such as Downs' Syndrome. Neither group fills Montgomery Gardens.

So, what were you driving at?

Any luck with the lawsuits on this one? That seems like the best route. If nothing else, the suit could freeze the 90 day period.

I'm not sure the 1700 could qualify for a class action, but it's worth contacting a firm.

Pay $1.25 on your way out. If you need change, you can tell him ahead of time to give the guy a chance to make the change so he's and everyone else aren't kept waiting.

Shout "Next stop" or "Proxima" when you want to get off.

Route is as you say:

Down Palisade.
Newark Ave.
Summit Ave (nearest corner to JSQ).
Pavonia Ave (Behind Courthouse).
Back to Newark Ave to Grove PATH.
Columbus Drive.
Marin Blvd to Newport Mall/ Gangemi Drive (6th).

There might be other routes.
