And this because of some non-registration issue? That's terrible. I'm sure there were hundreds and hundreds of unregistered bicycles laying around, cluttering up the space that needed to be removed because some crackpot scheme the building management planned for that room. Terrible.

Completely agree - building management even tried to blame other tenants who had moved out, saying they probably took my bike. They also claimed they never disposed of any bikes - only threatened to do so to encourage compliance. Given the very weak position I was negotiating from, I thought I did the best I could. But it still sucked and was one of the many reasons the day we moved out of Liberty Towers was one of the happier days of my life.

My road bike was stolen two years ago from the bike room in Liberty Towers. Like Greested, I was naive enough to think the bike was safe in a locked room on the 8th floor of a doorman building. My son's bike was stolen as well. I spoke with building management about it - apparently there had been a flyer that went around telling residents they had to register their bikes and if they didn't the bikes would be "disposed of." I never received the flyer. Long story short, even though they claimed they never actually got rid of any bikes, they did give me $500 for what was then a three-year old $1,200 bike. All in all, I thought that was a fair outcome given the circumstances - but it still sucks to be violated like that.

Nina/Croft - I'd bet almost anything those are stolen bikes. Have you notified the police? It would be great to catch some of these guys - even it it's just one or two at a time. It has to start somewhere, right?

I've noticed that at times it's 1 bike sometimes 3 or 4 on 2 different corners locked with a makeshift sign with a price and phone number.
What I find odd is that I'm always seeing different bikes and some have been covered or disguised with reflective tape. I can't help but wonder if these bikes are stolen. I see too many differentt ones all the time except for lately. I'm guessing that it's due to all of the sidewalk construction and police presence in that area.

Not sure if you'll be able to see it, given the weather, but the NYPD is supposed to be conducting a drill around Liberty Island in which they are going to drop EMS people from a helicopter onto a NY Waterway ferry. That's one way to beat the $6 fare....

Who is saying developers are against abatements? I've never heard that. I can't imagine the circumstances in which a developer would be opposed to one.

From what I understand, the catch in asking for an "adjustment" to the PILOT is that the PILOT is canceled. While that may be advantageous over the near term, you are trading away many years of certainty in the process.

Once the revaluation occurs - imminently - you will be tossed onto the seas of rising property tax rates, since they won't fiddle with valuations for another couple decades, if history is any indicator. I'd think hard about just how much you can get the valuation lowered (not sure if the numbers you were using were hypothetical) and what your likely hold period is on the property. If you are likely to sell in the next three to five years, it probably makes sense - although you'll be selling a newer apartment that lacks the PILOT that all the other sellers will possess.

Re: Councilwoman Elect Lopez a Florida Resident?

JP - yes, there are different definitions for different purposes, but we aren't talking about someone's right to own multiple dwellings.

"Florida law requires homeowners who take the exemption to be permanent residents."

NJ also has a homestead tax exemption - she wouldn't be able to claim it in NJ if she's claimed it elsewhere. At least on the count of where she lives, it seems clear she didn't "live" here.

Perhaps there is a gigundous loophole in NJ election law that allows for this, but I can't imagine what the original intent behind it would have been. Why would you want to encourage people who don't live here to govern you?

If it doesn't rain, I'll take the over on that. Sure - there hasn't been much (any?) "traditional" advertising, but I think that's a smart move and really not as necessary as it used to be. By choosing certain media, you can better shape your clientele. Besides, there's more awareness of it than you'd think.

It'd be great if this thing succeeded as a local gem. The last thing Liberty Harbor needs is another Sand Bar-type of attraction. Not that Zeppelin could handle it anyway - there's not a lot of parking in the area.

You know - that argument gets used a lot, especially for colleges: great football teams create a higher profile for a university and drives enrollment. I just don't know - I mean Auburn would beat Harvard every day out of the week in football. Would you choose Auburn over Harvard if you weren't going there to play football?

BIG A.D. PAY BOOSTS
Reading program expansion cut for supervisors' raises

The athletic directors were in the same union as coaches and teachers, and did not have the power to officially hire, fire, evaluate or supervise the coaches. That duty fell to Michael Venutolo, the district's director of athletics and nurses, Christen said.

But the directors believe they need to have the final say in athletic personnel decisions, and the district agreed - as did the state. Since at least 2003, the state Department of Education has required all new athletic directors to be certified as supervisors and all five of Jersey City's directors have the certification.

Do we really need to be so concerned about hiring and firing school coaches, as though we're talking about the Yankees or Mets? Is it worth $130,000+ per year to make that "enhancement"? A reasonable person might suggest that the athletic director could suggest to Mr. Venutolo that a specific change might need to be made.

We're talking about school kids right? Should we really care if school number 852 beats school number 1,346 in sport X? Sure athletics teach valuable lessons and they are great and they provide a safe alternative to running around unsupervised after school but I'll never understand the life and death win at all costs mentality associated with some high school (and younger) "programs." How many hundreds of billions of dollars get pumped into school athletics and what do we really have to show for it? Are we better served than if some of that money were spent on actual learning-based activities?

Re: City Council to Renegotiate Abatement For Developers

It's not a "lie" per se - the line they use is it's "85% sold and about 50% have closed." That made sense last year when they could only close a certain number per week. But the number of closed has been practically unchanged since the financial meltdown in September. Methinks 85% includes all of the folks who must have walked away at this point - but true, they did "sell" those units at one point.

Wow - I looked at the picture of the kid and all I could think was "you poor, stupid, stupid kid. One moment of bad judgment and your life may have been ruined." I don't say that to excuse or diminish the damage he caused and certainly the health of Mr. Torres is of greatest importance here. But 19 year-old males often do stupid things. I know I did. You just hope that your stupidity stays within the range of generally harmless. And if you have a son, you think that all the time.

The kid, if found guilty, definitely needs to suffer the consequences of his actions. I just don't think that's a cause for satisfaction or celebration.

Think about what you just said: "The building was about 50%". How did those people get mortgages when the building wasn't 70% sold? I stand by what I said - I have several great sources. And while MetroHomes defaulted a few months ago, they didn't formally lose the project until two weeks ago. (A default simply means you missed the due date on your payment.)

Re: City Council to Renegotiate Abatement For Developers

Trump is not 85% sold. They've been saying that for a year and only 50% have closed (slightly less, actually, the last time I looked.) On top of that, MetroHomes apparently was foreclosed on two weeks ago - meaning that is a situation ripe for the next owner to come groveling to council for his/her handout. Also, the notion Sottolano put forward that only buildings currently under construction would be likely to need amended abatements assumes that council (and Sottolano) would say no to a developer who came to them before even beginning their project looking for a handout. I have no confidence that Sottolano, et al would say no. I'm sorry, but "Team Healy" long ago lost the ability to play the "trust me" card.

The waterfront - and most of downtown for that matter - doesn't need abatements any more. There is no unusual risk in building downtown for which an incentive needs to be provided. Fifteen, twenty years ago? Sure - very little would have been built without them. Are you telling me Crystal Point wouldn't have happened without the original abatement, let alone the sweetener? Please.

And how on earth did the council just roll over so easily without telling Fisher to lower their prices across the board (and not just negotiate selectively on an ad hoc basis) before they considered amending the abatement? According to several prominent realtors I've spoken with over the past several days, Crystal Point has not officially lowered their prices - contrary to what they told the Jersey Journal.

if you think about it, most high rises in jc waterfront are soldout. The only 2 building with massive inventory left are crystal point and 77hudson. Even trump is 85% sold (at least that's what the agent tells me).

So really only 77hudson could come knocking..

I definitely support a nice abatement for a developer if they want to come NOW and build a NEW high rise condo in jc. As the market right now is very tough, and the new construction will create a lot of jobs for few years, it's the very definition of what abatement is designed to do.

Crystal point, after thinking it through i agree it's probably not in the best interest of the city. Fulop's argument makes sense, the building is done, it wont create new jobs or do anything for the city. The tax reduction might let the developer sell a few more units faster and generate revenue for the city sooner, but at the end of day i think the city lost more than it gained.

People are so quick to dismiss ideas. Some of the strangest things actually work...

The one-time mayor of Bogota, Colombia used mimes to shame pedestrians and motorists into obeying laws and it was wildly successful. Mimes! Many of his other unorthodox anti-corruption and anti-violence initiatives were quite effective as well.

"Another innovative idea was to use mimes to improve both traffic and citizens' behavior. Initially 20 professional mimes shadowed pedestrians who didn't follow crossing rules: A pedestrian running across the road would be tracked by a mime who mocked his every move. Mimes also poked fun at reckless drivers. The program was so popular that another 400 people were trained as mimes."

Actually, trying to do something productive like a recall is the opposite of whining about them. There are several excellent reasons a recall would have a much better chance of succeeding than the recently purchased election did. You may not care. You may not be capable of understanding. But hopefully the day will come next year where you realize how wrong you were.

Binky - don't forget: none of the mayor's assemblage of rubber stamps would have been elected without the millions Healy put into the campaign. That $3.5 million wasn't just for Healy, but all of "Team Healy." Even Vega didn't raise that much money on his own - he had raised about $125,000 a week prior to the election.

If Fulop runs in four years and he is the obvious choice, there will be no one sitting out there with millions of dollars to buy up the council seats. Figure Fulop finds other engaged, intelligent people to fill out his ticket and suddenly the landscape is completely different.

I just walked over - happened to run into the developer (Peter Mocco). He said it was absolutely their intention to open today, but the inspection process dragged out much longer than expected. (There were inspectors there while I was speaking with him. ) There was still some light finishing construction going on - looked like they were essentially done. The interior is done and has a Munichy kind of look and feel.

Peter said they should be ready to go Wednesday and an official opening next weekend. He also pointed out the 142 taps..... whenever it actually opens, it'll definitely be worth the wait!

Great job, Webmaster - thanks for posting this. The saddest part about the discussion was that the six council members (well, five really - Flood seemed to catatonic to "discuss") were largely allowed to frame this as a debate on the merit of abatements. Fulop called it what it is - it's a giveaway to the developer. Many of the people who spoke against the handout to Fisher are themselves recipients of abatements (or PILOTs) and don't disagree with them in principal.

It is time for JCPD to step up and and enforce the law.

I've spent a lot of time in those cities as well and yes, the drivers are certainly more cautious. But the thing that has always struck me is that the pedestrians are very different as well. With very, very few exceptions people only cross at crosswalks. People don't cross against the light even if there isn't a car within three blocks. The equation is completely different on both sides - driver and pedestrian.

I'm certainly not a blame the victim type - and it's clear in the recent cases that drivers were at fault. But it would be nice if all pedestrians treated the road like the dangerous place that it is. And I say this as someone who walks a lot more than he drives.
