Re: Colgate Clock returning

Yes its good news for waterfront infrastructure this year. The Stinky Bridge got rebuilt and the clock is back too. My cynical expectations of an interminable process in each case was completely off the mark. Thanks to those responsible for putting this stuff back to rights.

Ominous portent. I hope we don't have long to wait for an "official statement" and I hope when it comes it wont be some sort of white wash.

Re: Jersey City Sees Stardom for Loew's
Home away from home
Home away from home

Regarding development of the area and money allocated for the Loew?s, I certainly hope the city will allow a place at the table for the Friends of the Loew?s organization when the money starts to get spent. The Friends of the Loew?s have been on the job all this time, when NOBODY ELSE HAS and it would be very unfair to take it away from them now that there is some money in the pipeline. Through a couple of administrations the Friends have hung in there making steady progress on the cinema restoration and providing virtually the ONLY culture venue for the entire neighborhood. I have heard people snipe at how things get done, or the pace of how things get done at the Loew?s, but on the other hand without the Friends of the Loew?s volunteers NOTHING would have been done with that unique jewel of a building and it would have been demolished ten years ago. Truffle pigs do all the work finding the truffles but at the last minute the truffle is taken away, lets not take the Loew?s away from the people who have demonstrated that their hearts have been in the right place all along

Some of those plastic soup cups with the resealable lids are PERFECT for holding frozen homemade soup when the Great Jersey City Soup Swap comes around again this winter. Just saying.

Re: Pedestrian and bicycle bridge to WFC

A bridge would never be practical. The value of the real estate on each end would be too high to purchase the square miles of necessary bridge approach space on each shore. Set your sites on something more prosaic like a huge sling shot to fire pedestrians and cyclists over the river one two and three at a time. Now all you need is a huge slingshot one each side of the Hudson, each with an accompanying huge net to safely catch the people with. Then a huge stack of waiver forms and some wind speed calculations.

Re: Jersey City Navratri Festival
Home away from home
Home away from home

If you have not yet taken the time to visit Newark St. during Navratri on any of the nights of the festival you?re missing one of the great public spectacles of this or any other city. I know this is a bold statement but trust me, if you take the time to see it you will likely agree. The sight of thousands of people, people of all ages, dressed in beautiful colorful and sequined fabrics all doing the same rhythmic dance in a three block long circle to the sound of live Indian music is an experience you should not deny yourself. I have lived in the neighborhood for years and I never miss it but I find its like pulling teeth to get people to come and experience it. We all know how hard it is to get friends from New York to come to Jersey City, for any reason. But it?s twice as hard to convince them to visit here for an event that begins after 10:00P.M.- and its only just getting started at ten, better to come at eleven! Friends I have managed to convince all agreed it was worth the trouble. If you actually live IN Jersey City you have NO EXCUSE not to see one of the most significant cultural events the city can boast. I know it sounds like I am one of those people who exaggerate by putting three or four exclamation points at the end of every sentence, but in this case I feel entirely justified speaking in superlatives. You should not allow yourself to miss experiencing Navratri.

Re: Runners in LSP
Home away from home
Home away from home

I used to run two or three times a week in the park before I changed my route. Some runners prefer the road surface as an asphalt surface is marginally softer than a cement surface- this is why you see people running in the street when there is a cement sidewalk available. My recollection of the pedestrian walk in the park is that it was sometimes strewn with twigs and leaves and any runner will prefer a clear surface to one with obstructions, no matter how small. As to the complaints of auto drivers about pedestrians on foot in the park? I have no sympathy for them since they have the REST OF THE CITY in which to drive like idiots in. What perplexed me, as a pedestrian in the park, was why the drivers were going so fast through the park. Why not slow down and enjoy the park as it was intended to be used, not use it as a way to bypass surface streets as appears to be the case.

Re: PATH (pathetic attempt at transporting humans)

Just an FYI, the Bayyone Bridge pedestrian/bike walkway has been closed as they prepare to raise the bridge span. I found this out the hard way when I attempted to return to J.C. from Statten Island one afternoon last week on my bike. I had to RACE back to the ferry in order to make it back to the WTC PATH station before the rediculous 3:30 bike cut off hour and I JUST made it. I did a google search for info on the closing just now and I see they say they provide a shuttle service to pedestrians and bikers, but there was no mention of this at the bridge approach where I saw only the sign saying the pedestrian walkway was closed since August. Her is the link: http://www.panynj.gov/bridges-tunnels ... destian-bicycle-info.html

Re: "Empty Sky" - NJ State 9/11 Memorial in Liberty State Park

Home away from home

Your the governing body of the New Jersey 9/11 Memorial Foundation. You mailed out a very large number of post cards inviting bereaved family members to your yearly big event. But at the last minute you find you can't get a politician or a band to take part in your show. Do you A) stage your event anyway with dignity and grace? or B) Decide not to show up the day of the event and make no worthwhile attempt to tell your invited guests the party is not going to happen? The fact that the N.J.9/11 memorial Foundation decided to take the second option speaks volumes about their priorities and lack of professionalism. I personally feel that the members of the Foundation should all resign at this point. There is no good reason they couldn't have made some last minute attempt to have a scaled down memorial service and the idea that they didn't even have one of their members show up to explain themselves to the families is the worst sort of insult.

Re: Cop causing havoc on the Blvd

Home away from home

I have not seen the policeman in question but I'm still offering this dissenting opinion in favor of any cop doing anything to enforce traffic laws in this town. Arm them with flamethrowers if it helps, I want to see tickets issued to bad Jersey City drivers regardless of the form it takes. Any argument that the cop in question was driving badly can never outweigh, in my opinion, the very low level of traffic law compliance practiced by the majority of motorists in this town.

I think "kudos for Waterman" is a bit strong since in my view its more a case of someone starting things off on a very obvious wrong foot and not cause for congratulation. Sh eshould have known not to try to get away with it. Kudos to us for not having to swallow nepotism right off the bat.
kudos |?k(y)o??d?s; -?d?z; -?d?s|
noun
praise and honor received for an achievement.
ORIGIN late 18th cent.: Greek.
USAGE Kudos comes from Greek and means ?glory.? Despite appearances, it is not a plural form. This means that there is no singular form kudo and that use as a plural, as in the following sentence, is incorrect:: he received many kudos for his work (correct use is | he received much kudos for his work).

Re: Drivers and Crosswalks
Home away from home
Home away from home

I think what it comes down to is that it is a privilege to operate a motor vehicle. Its a right to be able to cross the street. Auto drivers in this thread need to get over themselves, its not O.K. to drive like an idiot "because this is a city and there are a lot of cars" or that "people in cars are busy and need to get where they are going". People have a basic right to walk safely at intersections and if it means the car drivers have to wait than they must take this as part of the price of the privilege of operating a car.

Its a brave move for Fulop. He could have sat back and allowed it to run its course and if people felt the process was flawed, he could have said it was a holdover from the last administration. Which it was. Now he is going to "own" it and be responsible regardless of the political fallout and I think this shows a lot of character since he must know some people will blame him personally when the taxes go up.

Re: What has Nidia Lopez accomplished in Ward C?
Home away from home
Home away from home

Nidia lost the election. But I am still curious about one of the claimed accomplishments her supporters had on that long list they put up here a few posts down. There was one about a "Heights Arts District Overlay Zone in Ward C" Nidia is supposed to have brought it to ward C. I asked specifically about it earlier and I am still curious to learn more about it. From what I have gleaned it was developed for downtown as a zoning modification that would somehow benefit artists. Here is the link I found most useful: http://www.jerseycityindependent.com/ ... t-is-overlayed-in-ward-d/ Note that it never mentions Lopez or ward C but perhaps it was expanded on? Was there ever an Arts District designated in Ward C? Did any artists find it helpful? The link above ends with enthusiastic predictions for the effect the overlay would have: .."this was just the start of arts scenes blowing up in Jersey City. ?It?s not just downtown anymore...It?s spreading like wildfire throughout the city.? gushed a councilperson. I'm wondering what was spreading like wildfire, and did the flames ever lick ward C at all? In general I am curious how the "overlay" has helped or is supposed to have helped artists in any part of our city. Were artists PREVENTED from working in Jersey City before the Overlay? In what way did the Overlay change anything?

..."It's JC's way to gentrify an entire community, much in the same way Brooklyn did with Williamsburg or Red Hook.".... I'm picturing a big cartoon roll of some invisible magic fabric that Nidia rolls out over Ward C and then staples down the edges. Thats my mental image of an "Arts District Overlay". Are you saying its a magic population converter, turning everyone it touches into hipsters? I worry that some of us in Ward C would look silly. If an "arts overlay" has some substantive benefit to local ARTS culture, I would love to hear someone from Nidia's or Fulop's camp explain what effects this "Art District Overlay" has had on Ward C. In my ignorance I don't see much art related stuff going on in the ward.

It would be great to hear from the Fulop people. I would like to hear them explain to the voters of ward C why their candidate doesn't need to attend public debates. If you are reading any of this Team Fulop, could you please explain to us why Lopez is good for ward C? You could tell us what she accomplished in the last four years and explain what her goals are for the future. If you have seen any of my posts concerning your candidate you may have noticed I keep repeating this simple request and you may also have noticed a distinct lack of answers from Lopez or her people. How is this even possible in a campaign? As I have said before, I will vote for Lopez if you can convince me she's the right person for the job.

Can anyone explain what the "Heights Arts District Overlay Zone in Ward C" is? It sounds like some sort of art related thing I guess? But what is it. If its included in Nidia Lopez's campaign rhetoric there must be something to it that Nidia claims is a positive substantive benefit to ward C. What is it? I googled it but got nothing.

Thanks Mouse. For a couple of weeks I have bee hoping someone would step up and list accomplishments Nidia Lopez has made in the last four years. Until you put up this list I honestly had no clue as to what Nidia was claiming to have accomplished. (And I'm still waiting for a list of things she plans for the future, if she should be reelcted) As happy as I am to see the list, I think it could be more to the point and shorter if you stuck to actual substantive things that were completed during the four years. Some of the things on your list are broad generalizations or they are things many people working together accomplished and in those cases I don't think they should be included on this sort of list.

Re: Bike JC's 4th Annual Jersey City Ward Tour + Festival
Home away from home
Home away from home

I think all the cops did a great job. Automobile drivers in Jersey City are the worst, and I felt a lot more secure with the Motorcycle cops acting like a buffer on the portions of the route that were two way traffic. For these officers to be a safety buffer at the left edge of the bike group they had to be riding into oncoming Jersey City car traffic, always at the edge of the oncoming lane or IN THE ONCOMING LANE. The sirens were certainly necessary for our safety. If any Jersey City police are reading this I would like to say Thank You.

Still waiting to hear ANYTHING about what Lopez has accomplished. I cut and pasted this snippet from the Jersey Journal piece someone added below ...."There is no job too big or too small for the councilwoman"....but I have yet to hear about any of these "jobs" she is said to be constantly working on. Can't ANYONE name one, even one of the small ones? Hey Team Fulop why are you throwing Ward C under the buss? Please explain to Ward C why you thing she is good for us.

Re: Why I Like Councilwoman Nidia Lopez

Home away from home

I'm disappointed with the posturing and bluster going on in this thread and in the other thread abut Nidia Lopez. I have been consistently asking for and hoping to find two simple things: What had Nidia Lopez DONE in the past and what are her intentions for the future, if she were reelected. Why are these two things so hard to come by? Lets define what I mean: Her accomplishments in the past should be defined as actual things she has gotten done. I would like to see examples of how she came upon a situation and through the force of her own will was able to make something positive happen. After four years in office there should be one or two things that she can point to as completed successful achievements right? What are they? And as for defining what she has in mind for the future, that should be super easy for anyone in the middle of a campaign to come up with and once again I have to ask: Why do I even need to ASK to hear it? This would be an EXCELLENT time for someone from Team Fulop to step up and explain the candidate they have been backing forr Ward C. Its a campaign, why do we need to ASK for information about a candidate?

Re: Why I Like Councilwoman Nidia Lopez

Home away from home

There are and have been for at least two or three years speed bumps in Pavonia in Jersey City, I bicycle past them all the time. I agree with others voicing their concern that pedestrian safety in Ward C has long been virtually ignored. My particular pet peeve is with the timing of the Walk/Don't Walk lights, which in EVERY intersection in Ward C favor the motorists. I'm fit and active and can just barely make it across JFK Blvd if I step off the curb the moment the Walk sign appears. There are plenty of mobility restricted people in my part of town and I can't see how they could safely cross any of the streets in Ward C. Who is looking after their safety? As to the fountain at Journal Square and the monument to Stuyvesant that was allowed to be misappropriated, neither of those issues has been resolved in any way anyone should be crowing about, they each represent a failure. If anyone was working at putting either of those issues to rights they have taken too long and they have not produced results. .

I did a quick google search for "Cost of empty sky memorial" and I got a lot of hits for projections of what the expected cost was supposed to be- written before construction got underway- and the figure that was most repeated was 12 million dollars. Does anyone know what the actual final cost of the two cement walls turned out to be?

I'm a Ward C voter. I'm glad someone started this thread to discuss the positive aspects of Nidia Lopez since there is a distinct lack of information on what she has done in the last four years and what her goals are if she gets reelected. Looking for something positive to add, I read that Lopez once had an idea of turning the unused decorative building at the PATH plaza at Journal Square into a police facility. Its that nice little building in the trees there right alongside the sidewalk on JFK Blvd. and its not being used for much as far as I can see. I think having a police presence right at that location is a good idea. I wonder why nothing was ever done with this idea.

Heights Brat! Good to see you are back in the discussion, however briefly. I still think it would be great if you could say something positive about Mrs. Lopez. As a person who appears to be supporting Mrs. Lopez (or at least you are apparently in opposition to those who do not) Could you take some time to briefly say ANYTHING positive about Nidia Lopez? As the only person in this discussion who appears to be in favor of Mrs. Lopez, could you say anything substantive about why Lopez is the right person for the job?
