Interest in forming writers group?
Home away from home
Home away from home

I am wondering if there are any writers out there interested in joining a group -- specifically children's/YA, and/or fiction writing.

Anyone?

There's an empty lot, I believe it's an old park, on First St between Colgate and Brunswick that I always thought would make a great garden, if anyone is looking for spaces.

It is not excusable to use hate language in 2011.

Until we can show love and compassion for every child, regardless of their life circumstances, we cannot progress.

+ 1. Well said.

I also find the language he used later, describing children in his school system as "dirty, nasty, bad" reprehensible. I don't care what they do, they are children, and what happens at school happens on Epps's watch. These are people to be educated and helped, not "dirty" creatures to be ignored.

I'm all for more parks, but can we stop the insanity of the Embankment people? The High Line has elevators to bring up the disabled and has multiple workers with walkee-talkees patrolling it constantly. If it wasn't patrolled and cleaned, it would become a seedy no-man's-land in days.

To turn the Embankment into that kind of park, we'd need bridges to join all the sections, multiple elevators, security guards, lamps, fencing, and landscaping. No one's going to spend that much money for a park that doesn't even go through a high-traffic part of town. Pick your battles, people. There are plenty of other places to beautify downtown.

THANK YOU. A park as isolated as the embankment would be is foolish here. Jersey City isn't Chelsea. I don't want condos either. I wish it could just be left as it is...

That was my reaction too -- it looked like someone spilled some Feline Pine. I believe commercially available pellets are usually blue or bright green...but who knows what someone could whip up themselves. Better safe than sorry. Thanks for calling about it and protecting neighborhood animals!

My favorite chili in the area is Rutt's Hut. They are best known for their hot dogs, but the chili (meat only) is great. They're in Clifton so you need a car.

I have seen these around, but not in a while. If you contact HDSID (Historic Downtown Special Improvement District) they may be able to help you. http://www.jcdowntown.org/

I'm not too crazy about them. They kind of act like they're doing you a favor by waiting on you. Also both times I've been there they were overcharging for stamps ($0.50 each) which is illegal, I think.

In Manhattan there's Doyle and Doyle, which deals in antique fine jewelry. There is also a place near the path called Pippin, which has a mix of vintage/antique precious and semi-precious things, I believe.

Anyone have an update on the progress? I see them working in there, and closing up the alcove to prevent people from taking up residence is definitely a move in the right direction. I want to have my birthday there in March, but it's not looking too likely...

Please Vote For Me is fantastic...about a elementary school class in China that hold its first class election.

Party Down is a Starz series that is on there and is pretty funny. My husband also loves the Michael Palin travel shows (like Pole to Pole, etc)

Moon is great.

Let the Right One In is the best vampire movie I've ever seen -- the original, not the American remake. Make sure you watch with subtitles, not the cheesy dubbing. I'm not sure if there's on option with the streaming.

An Education and District 9 are both streaming now. They were my two favorite movies of 2009.

We went there over the weekend with friends. The food was fantastic. The service was competent, if a bit cold. (I don't think we got a single smile from any of the waitstaff). You definitely need reservations, and make them at least a day in advance. Great addition to JC.

I had high expectations for this morning's sunrise, but to be honest, I was disappointed. I try to watch local sunrises whenever I can, but you can find a dozen sunrises just like it in New York and for the same amount of money. It looked nice, but was too short and bland. I give it about an evening before everyone is looking for a new sunrise.

Re: A & P Supermarkets File For Bankruptcy Protection

I hope they don't close! They are a touch more expensive than Shop Rite, but the experience is SO MUCH better. (I saw a roach crawling on a shelf in Shop Rite and could never go back). I don't know about Target taking that much of their business. The food selection there is still very limited, with the exception of frozen stuff. If you want fresh food beyond clementines and Red Delicious apples, you have to go to the supermarket.

As a side note, the family that started the supermarket has an interesting history: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/20/arts/19cnd-hartford.html

I've heard lots of great things about Real Food in the city: http://www.realfoodcatering.net/aboutus.htm

Also, check out kvetch.indiebride.com for loads of info on caterers/everything wedding related.

The Mezzanine in Newark is a cool space: http://www.frungillo.com/frungillo_new/mez/index.htm

I don't know how much it is...

I've heard that Frungillo, the caterer, can be annoying, though.

There is also the Loew's in Journal Square, though there you are just renting the space, and have to bring in everything else...not sure if you're interested in that.

The Hyatt in JC also has beautiful views of the city from their courtyard, which they use for events.

Re: The Entire Board of Liberty Humane Society Just Resigned...
Home away from home

I have to respectfully disagree with you both. No kill does not mean that the shelter becomes a retirement home for unwanted animals. It means the focus becomes adoption. It's interesting that this article doesn't point out the great successes Liberty has been having lately with events like Adoptapalooza.

It is important to have a no kill shelter in Hudson County.

It is easier and cheaper to be a kill shelter? Of course. Any time they become pressed for space, they kill some animals. Any time an animal is mildly sick, like with a cold, they can kill it if they feel like it -- no need to spend money on medicine.

I don't know the full story, and I'm sure there are things to be improved on by both sides. No kill is hard, but we have to try.

Everyone has said this, from Truman to Gandhi, and a million others, but society is judged by how it treats its weakest members. We have a responsibility to these animals. Many of them were brought into the world because of people, and we have to take care of them.

I am looking to put together a Jersey City themed gift bag -- what would be good to include? I'm specifically looking for things made in JC - like baked goods from Made With Love, things like that.
Are there any local drink/soda companies that were started in JC? For some reason Fizzy Lizzy comes to mind, but not sure if it is really from JC.

Thanks!

My bike was stolen this morning between 8:45 and 9:30. It was locked with a cheapish chain in the garage of my building on 5th st. The chain had been cut. I'm guessing one of my neighbors left the garage door open this morning. Other bikes in and outside the garage were untouched. It is a women's schwinn, dark purple.

I JUST got this bike on Saturday, and was planning to go to the bike shop today for a kryptonite lock.

Mocking birds are crazy! Be careful not to go near their nests, because they will attack you. There was one in VVP last year that built its nest in a low shrub, and was dive bombing all the people and dogs that walked by.
They are easiest to recognize when flying, as they have a white stripe across their wings (only visible when they are open).

Re: The Hamilton Inn

What I'm hearing is that some of the issues that people have with the prices here is that they feel the type of food doesn't match the prices...is that right? Like, $14 for spaghetti and meatballs?
I think what they are going for hear is very much a vintage-y 60's menu/theme. Hence the emphasis on fancy cocktails, and things like clams casino on the menu (and the font of their logo). Will I expect to see lardo on the menu there? No. I don't think they're trying to be a local tavern, either. There is a concept here, I think they are just maybe struggling to let it come through without seeming like Johnny Rockets or something.
Despite what lots of posters have said. I don't think this place is overpriced, and I think the food is really good.

Re: Hamilton Inn

We went here a second time last week, and enjoyed it very much. They are still working out some of their service issues, but that's to be expected in the first few weeks. My fiancee had a cheeseburger, which he said was great, and I had the pecan and goat cheese salad, which was excellent. I thought the portion sizes were normal, and we both were full. The prices seemed fair for the type of place they want to be. It's not a place we can afford to eat at every week, but that's ok.

Both times we have gone at around 8:30, and there weren't any kids that I noticed.
