Shabbat in Jersey City
Home away from home
Home away from home

Mayor Fulop, outreach organization join for rooftop dinner
BY JOANNE PALMER

Steve Fulop, Jersey City?s first-term mayor, just won re-election in a landslide; he got 78 percent of the vote

Mr. Fulop, a Democrat who was a Wall Street trader before September 11, and then joined the Marines, and then became mayor of the state?s second largest city, has much to celebrate. This Friday night, he?ll celebrate something else as well. Shabbat.
He?ll be at what is billed as the Rooftop Shabbat dinner, in a space overlooking the Jersey City waterfront, as one of many guests of Mesorah NJ, an outreach organization with a growing presence among the Jews moving into the city.

Of course, Mr. Fulop is a natural at a Shabbat dinner. He?s the grandson of Holocaust survivors, the son of an IDF veteran, and a onetime student at the Rabbi Pesach Raymon Yeshiva in Edison, where he grew up, and then the Solomon Schechter School of Union and Essex (although he left for public school because he craved soccer).

Today, he said, ?I?m obviously very secular, and if anybody reaches out I go; I have done a lot of different events with different parts of the Jewish community.

?I do this for a lot of different communities? ? not all of them Jewish ? ?but I am Jewish. My background is a large part of who I am.?

The city is increasingly Jewish as well, he said. ?We have three synagogues; we have a very large community of secular professionals who identify as Jewish. Many are young, but there are more families here now.? There is also a growing chasidic presence in southern Jersey City, he added, as families move there from Brooklyn.

The invitation to Shabbat dinner ? which is open to the public (but by the time you read this it?s too late to go) ? says that it will involve specialty cocktails and gourmet food. It?s aimed at unaffiliated young professionals.

Yes the building was sold and the liquor licence is held by the new owners. The food is inspired by Trinidad. The owners are a couple (not sure if they are married) The female is from Trinidad who is does the menu and her mate is from Ireland (hence all the Irish whiskey). They should do well even though we now have 2 other restaurants in the area Oak on Pine (American Bistro) and Pinwheel Garden (Asian Fusion) they are the only ones with a liquor licence.

This place is the old Modern American Eatery spot As of now its cash only, they are not fully up and running to accept credit cards. . The small menu that they do offer is delicious. The owners are locals who live in the area. food is fresh, spicy and well priced. I look forward to trying their full menu which should be available any day now. I wish you guys the best of luck and I will see you again real soon.

A historic cemetery up in Jersey City has been doing some fundraising by hosting parties and galas... at the cemetery itself.

Some families say this is simply disrespecting the dead.

Videos and pictures from fundraisers at Jersey City and Harsimus Cemetery show them spilling over onto gravesites.

These parties have live rock bands, blankets, and lawn chairs spread across graves, port-o-potties, and hot dog stands.

A Jersey City man faces up to 20 years if convicted following his arrest last Saturday on charges including possession of more than five ounces of suspected methamphetamine with intent to distribute it near a school and near public property.

The data shows Hillary Clinton leading with early voters not just in swing states like Ohio and Arizona, but in the deep red GOP strongholds of Georgia and Texas, where Trump is favored to win. Reuters still doesn?t have the early voting numbers from Florida and North Carolina, but the polls also show those states leaning towards Hillary Clinton.

According to the University of Florida?s U.S. Election Project, over 19 million of us have taken advantage of the early voting period, that?s 20 percent of registered voters. This makes sense, given the four-to-seven point lead Hillary Clinton has enjoyed over the past few weeks. The Reuters/Ipsos poll?s findings are also similar to the lead president Barack Obama had over Mitt Romney back in 2012.

http://bipartisanreport.com/2016/10/2 ... ndits-left-stunned-stats/

And the news keeps getting better?Polls also show Hillary Clinton on track to win the 270 votes from the Electoral College that she needs to win the White House.

A woman in Iowa was arrested this week on suspicion of voting twice in the general election, court and police records show.

Terri Lynn Rote, a 55-year-old Des Moines resident, was booked Thursday on a first-degree charge of election misconduct, according to Polk County Jail records. The charge is considered a Class D felony under Iowa state law.

Rote was released Friday after posting $5,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Nov. 7.

The Des Moines Register reported that Rote is a registered Republican who cast two ballots in the general election: an early-voting ballot at the Polk County Election Office and another at a county satellite voting location, according to police records.

Rote hadn?t planned on voting twice but said it was ?a spur-of-the-moment thing? when she walked by the satellite voting location, she told The Washington Post in a phone interview Saturday.

?I don?t know what came over me,? Rote said.

She added she has been a supporter of Donald Trump since early in his campaign, after Republican candidate Mike Huckabee dropped out of the primary race.

The film festivities will kick off Friday, Nov. 4 with a red carpet opening night reception from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Skyline Room at the NJCU School of Business.

A New Development Proposal for 678-690 Grand Street, Bergen-Lafayette
Home away from home
Home away from home

Myneni and Sons, LLC has applied to build a mixed-use building at 678-690 Grand Street, stretching from Westervelt Place to Ivy Place. A legal notice from the Jersey City Zoning Board of Adjustment shows that the building proposal calls for a five-story structure. Should it be approved, there will be retail and commercial space on the first floor, and 60 residential units on the upper floors. 10% of the units in the building will be dedicated to veterans? housing for 15 years, the notice states, and there will also be a parking garage for residents containing 65 spaces.

The lot where the project is proposed for currently sits vacant. Part of the land along Westervelt Place previously contained Luigi?s Flats Fixed and General Mechanic, which has since moved to Fairmount Avenue, until the building was demolished several years ago. Myneni and Sons acquired the tracts, which provide views of the Jersey City and Lower Manhattan skylines, last year, according to NJ Parcels records.
