The one in Bayonne is the absolute worst I have ever encountered. The one in Secaucus is okay as is the one in North Bergen.

Funny, I have been regularly running into the bike police in the park by me for the last six years. I just got home from an association meeting & the bikes are schedule to be back on the street up here (in the North) as soon as the weather gets a bit warmer.

Presumably, if he was in upstate New York, he wasn't on official business.

Mariano had a place in upstate New York & it was not unusual for friends to be invited up for ski weekends. As for the insurance, the City is self insured, the County may very well be also.

Incidents like Chico's were commonplace only difference is that they were covered up. They crucified Sandra Cunningham for what was clearly a set-up several years back & she was not involved in any accident.

Collecting a pension and taking a job are not the same thing.

And once again, you can drum all you like, you can choose people who say they are going to march to that drum but at the end of the day, if there is no law/ordinance prohibiting it then nothing illegal has been done.

Collecting a City pension & taking a City job is not the same thing? Many would beg to differ as the person is drawing 2 checks from the same entity. That's a little different than collecting a City pension & being a stocker at Target.

This is nothing new. There is no conflict of interest unless the county &/or the city have things on their respective agendas that may impact the other. For example: The city is voting to put a hi-rise on a parcel of land & the county is voting to put a park on the same parcel. (This is a very broad generalized example but gives the basic idea)

Funny that this thread started up.

This morning on the radio, before 6am, they had one of those 'man in the street' questions; this was in Manhattan. It was, in effect, would you take a video/picture of someone idling & turn it in if you could collect 1/2 of the ticket value for doing so. All but one person would.

How about the neighbor who's idling the car for 20min to 30min while he's in the house getting dressed, having coffee or whatever.

I agree about the police especially if there is no particular reason for the vehicle to be running.

Let us return to the subject of parking. The classic turn around for business is the Medical Center downtown. When the hospital was on Montgomery St, it had limited parking. Its new location has a tremendous parking lot even though it is across the street from the lite rail. The Medical Center is competing for customers across Hudson, Bergen, and Essex Counties. It could not survive without its parking lot. If this was a Aesop fairy tale, the moral of the story is, provide parking for your customers or they will go elsewhere.

You allege parking on Central Ave. but at any given time there is 25 to 30 empty stores & those that are there are junk stores. Where are the Thorne's, Marilynn's, Rosen's, Eagel Beef's, etc that catered to a clientele? Parking certainly didn't destroy Central Ave, no vision did. Maybe, just maybe, changing demographics had something to do with it, not the lack of parking. And as for your yearning for the 70's, we yearn for a lot of things but then reality comes up to bite us in the booty. That was then, this is now & we can only move forward & leave our dreams of a past in our dreams.

Why is this even a discussion. We have decks. They are open to the public and they are half used. So the solution is to build more decks? How does that make sense?

These decks you talk about are not close enough for people to use. It is difficult to get around in the snow/ice, plus slush. Now you expect people to walk blocks in this weather to go an event. Another night of snow is expected to come which will hide the ice and uneven sidewalk.

So your solution to a snowy/icy day is more people, especially seniors, driving cars and getting into accidents? Un-freaking-believable! My parents are getting up there in years, but they can still manage to walk several blocks. What they don't like as they get older is driving - too stressful, especially as their reflexes slow. Their auto insurance rates went up once they hit 75, because the elderly do get into more accidents. What I'm noticing in my building is more seniors moving in. The kids have moved out, they don't want to deal with maintaining a home, and they don't want to drive everywhere.

It would be nice if Jersey City would remove the ice and snow at the crosswalk. I don't buy the argument that 75 years old can manage the ice and snow. You cannot see the sidewalk. Many seniors drive safely, those in poor health should not. Years ago, a heart doctor in JC told me when the seniors fell on the ice and snow, the hospital ran all types of tests not related to the fall to earn more money. Well, the hospitals must be doing a booming business now. This is not NYC. Yes, I give Manhattan credit for removing snow and the sidewalks are shoveled. But to say, people can walk perhaps 10 blocks on ice and snow to get to a particular destination is a joke. They must also walk back.

There is a HUGE mass transit system under many streets generating a lot of heat keeping snow/ice accumulation down to a minimum.

You are hilarious. But until you show me some numbers to back this up, I'm just going to laugh at you. I'm pretty sure people are more likely to die in car accidents after shoveling, rather than the act of just shoveling their car out. Do you know if shoveling your walkway is less or more deadly than shoveling your car?? LOL

http://www.slate.com/articles/news_an ... 02/death_by_driveway.html
Just substitute driveway for cars parked on streets or speak to any physician on this subject.

This is just way too funny. First & foremost, the article is FIVE YEARS OLD!!!!!! It cites a study done in eastern Massachusetts from 1974-78 (or between 37 & 41 years ago).

??..The Lancet study, based on death certificates in eastern Massachusetts after six blizzards from 1974-78, demonstrated that ischemic heart disease deaths rose by 22 percent during the blizzard week and stayed elevated for the subsequent eight days, suggesting that the effect was related to storm-related activities, like shoveling, rather than the storm itself. Similarly, the AJC article, based on medical examiner records from three Michigan counties, found that there were more exertion-related sudden cardiac deaths in the weeks during and after blizzards, and that 36 of the 43 total exertion-related deaths occurred during or shortly after snow removal. It's possible that snow-shoveling is no more dangerous than any other physically draining activity?that the same individuals who die while clearing their driveways could just as well succumb to a vigorous jog. The post-blizzard spike could be attributed to the fact that sedentary people with potential heart problems have no choice but to engage in heart-pounding work with a shovel, whereas other aerobic activities (at other times of year) can be put off or skipped altogether???

This is just a small piece of the article which in no way, shape or form validates the assertion made. I am over 60, a neighbor is 71, another is 67 & has had a triple by-pass & double knee surgery & we are all out there shoveling. Of course we do something I am sure never crossed someone?s mind (because it does not fit into their need to always be right); we make a point of not over exerting ourselves, we shovel in stages ? like when the snow is 3 or 4 inches deep. Takes 15 minutes or so & no one breaks a sweat. But hey, that?s just us.

What parking lots on Central Ave.? The one by the police station has very limited space, the one by the post office is used primarily by the Parking Authority & Post Office, the one on Central & Congress is by permit only. The one behind Burger King is used by the Parking Authority & what may look like a wealth of parking isn't all it seems. Streets on the east side of Central are zoned.

As for Bayonne, well big whoppee-doo. There isn't any real shopping there unless you are into Chinese take out & 99 cent stores.

Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop, widely seen as a possible Democratic candidate for governor in 2017, will be making a visit to Sussex County.

Fulop is the star attraction at the Sussex County Democratic Committee's “winter gala” on March 7. The $75-per-ticket event will be held at the Farmstead Golf and Country Club in Andover Township.

Fulop, 38, is in his second year as mayor. He is the latest in a long line of Democrats with presumed statewide ambitions to take an interest in Sussex County despite Republicans having more than a 2-to-1 edge in voter registration.
