Like Corybraiterman, I think bars sprinkled throughout urban neighborhoods add charm. It's not as if every corner in JC has a bar - it is not even CLOSE to that. I don't understand the grouchiness on this site - do you really think East Village residents complain about bars nestled in their neighborhood?

Actually, they do. As do people in the west village as well. It is a constant battle between night life promoters of all kinds vs community boards. It so happens that the community board in the christopher st. area is one of the strongest in all of the city and is constantly biting back at the bars/restaurants/clubs in the 'hood. JC lister BrightMoment can probably tell you more about it than I can, I recall him saying he worked with them a few times on some issues.

Personally, I like seeing small bars/restaurants interspersed throughout the neighborhood. I think they add flavor to a place that would otherwise be a little boring. Not to say that it has to be every single corner, like the exaggerators here would like to say, but here and there, interspersed like trees in a field. After all, who here really has any problem with places like Lucky 7s, White Star, Hamilton Inn or the dive bars on places like Coles & 6th, 1st and Erie, etc.

As far as Barrow St goes, I remember going to that place with my dad 25 some-odd years ago when we lived over on Wayne (still a crime hotspot back then). It was a decent little place to go every now and then, so I'm kinda sad to see it go even though I haven't been in there in at least a decade. Good luck in a better location.

Re: Ferris High School students are trashing Downtown JC

1) As someone who's rented for numerous years, my concern for your property values is kinda low. In fact, unless you're actually trying to sell your place, you generally want lower property values, as it means less taxes.

2) Half of you are like bad stereotypes. Stop sounding like a grumpier, nastier version of Bill Cosby. The kids... with their hippin and the hoppin and the bippin... give it a break before you go full Clint Eastwood and call them all a bunch of zipperheads that need to get off your lawn. You live near an inner-city school with four-figure enrollment. You can hue and cry over the state of affairs, but whining for an untenable and infeasible solution ain't the answer.

3) I deal with kids of all ages and adults of all stupidities in my job every day. I run a store. We have to clean up pretty much every night litter from persons of all ages. It's part of every gathering of people of every age. Ever see Liberty St. Park after an AllPointsWest day? Sh** was a garbage dump, as is every single large grouping of humans.

4) The "WE'RE MAD AS HELL AND NOT GONNA TAKE THIS" stupidity is the dumbest line yet. Seriously? Siddown and be quiet. It's fine to get upset at a solution, but take the ranting elsewhere.

Here, you want a solution that's actually feasible? As it was alluded to earlier in the thread, it starts at home with the parenting. Get the parents involved. AKA hit 'em where it hurts. Get a group of cops wandering that area, looking for kids throwing trash on the street, and start doing the little minor arrests. Every HS kid in JC gets issued ID's, so it's really easy for the cops to roll into the main office, find out who the parent is, and either make them pick the kid up after school from the police station or simply issue tickets to the parents.

Kids catching a beating at home'll actually help put a stop to that and is actually a workable solution. Nothing will prevent it, as again, we're talking human beings here. Pretending otherwise is just stupid. Locking kids inside cafeterias that can't hold all of them is not. Grow up and figure out a real solution to the problem instead of being reactionary knuckleheads.

aside from the nonsense of expecting teenagers be model citizens, feel free to pay more taxes to fund a cafeteria expansion for every single HS because you think extra litter is unbearable.

me, i'd rather sweep up litter.

also, congratulations on growing up to be your parents. next you'll complain about their fashion, music and disrespect. in before you tell them to get off your lawn.

Re: Ducky's and Dumplings

Home away from home

Tried this place last night. I can safely say I am never ordering from them again. This meal was worse than Taco Bell.

Pork dumplings: adequate, nothing special, a bit too salty.
Shrimp dumplings: completely f'n disgusting. No shrimp flavor, all salt.
Vegetable fried rice: completely bland, except for, again... a salt taste. The "vegetables" were a few meager pieces of cabbage and miniscule amounts of scallions.

The shrimp dumplings I threw out after one bite, they were completely inedible. The fried rice stayed in the fridge to be used later for an adequate stir fry with actual taste.

To be clear, I don't dislike salt. I use it in almost every meal, and I cook with soy/teryaki/hoisin/oyster sauce on a regular basis.

Been going there for years and years for a variety of reasons. Printing out resumes, mailing packages, packing material, etc. Rich is as nice to me now that I rarely come in as I was when I would come in every other week. Never had a problem with anyone that works there.

Roommate got his debit card duped
Home away from home
Home away from home

Reasons he (we, I guess) know it was from one of two places. He jut got back in town this past Tuesday night after being out of state in the midwest for 2 months. He's only used his card at two places: Mama Leone's Pizza up in the heights for late-night delivery and the ATM at the liquor store on 7th and Erie.

They somehow made a thousand dollar charge at Duane Reade (how is that even possible?) and charges at Target, Best Buy, etc.

Just a reminder, don't use debit cards at places you aren't 100% sure of and check your activity as often as you can to spot fraud.

Never understood the Shoprite hate. Been going there since they opened up some 15? years ago. Hardly any problems, easily the cheapest prices in the area for sale items and a wide enough variety that I rarely need to look elsewhere for items.

That said, there are Trader Joes mere blocks from the 14th and 23rd St. Path stops. I try and make it a point to get a few things from them every time I'm in that area during the daytime hours.

HA! I like it a lot. PSA's were one of the main themes we had in that PATH community board meeting this past October. Kudos to them for actually listening to at least a little of what we had to say. Granted none of us had the idea for this particular gimmick, but I think its pretty amusing.

film it, put it on youtube. embarrass them publicly and then they'll do something about it.
