they basically always take our plastic, glass, tin, etc including detergent containers, in clear plastic recycling bags, and the take our recycled paper which we put in a cardboard box. If they leave something,
regular garbage OR recycling,
we call incinerator authority the same morning, and they come back and get it the same day.

Never had a problem if we call.
We're in Hamilton Park, maybe it's different neighborhood by neighborhood,
depending on who's doing the picking up...

Just wondering, if anyone wants to play

what people think about where Jersey City
will be in 2010... Factoring in all the pros

Happy holiday.

I worried it would be a lot more...

Greenville, I agree in general, in fact
we did that in other places we've lived,
but right now we're just not
up for it, and with the price in ok range,
we figure let a pro do it...

As I posted on another thread, according to a parking supervisor I spoke with, the parking authority is going by license numbers input into a computer, and noting the time. So, they don't have to watch to see if you parked for two hours, the computer tells them you were parked at 9 a.m. in the zone, and then after 4. Not that it's right, or bright, but this is what he said is the current system:

IF you park in a zone at, say, 12 pm., but only stay there for 10 minutes, your allowable time in that space is till 2 p.m. PERIOD. If the parking guy has put your license number in the COMPUTER at, say 12:00, at 2pm THAT IS IT FOR THE DAY. NO good moving out of the zone at 12:15, then moving back in at 3 p.m. to the original zone for another 2 hours or even another 2 minutes!!

Once the clock starts on your 2 hours (at 12 p.m. in my example), that is it for the DAY. Your time in that zone is USED UP at 2 pm, even if you haven't actually been parked there for two hours....

Christine16 said,
"I got my bangs trimmed there and was really dissappointed. Not only were they cut weird (very blunt as opposed to peicey as they originally were) but they were REALLY crooked (i had to go home and fix them myself and I suck at that)! It was a huge let down."

My experience is that in a good salon,
they will recut hair if the client is unhappy with the result. I wonder if they would have offered to recut the bangs for free
if you went back and complained. I would hope so...

I do intend to give them a try, and hope they come through with a great cut...I want to support local businesses if at all possible.

Reporting in:

Took the light rail to 9th and Congress,
then walked over to 7th and Jefferson.
Had dinner on River Road (restaurant called 340)(actually FYI three of us split appetizer/salads/1 dessert and it was pretty reasonable for outdoor cafe on river, but entrees on all river road restaurants were over our budget for a "grabbing a bite to eat" nite).

Took light rail home from Hoboken station.
Very pleasant evening. But there were a fair amount of parking spaces over near
Jefferson, so we COULD have driven.
Nice not to have to, though. I'm glad to know about the 9th/Congress stop on
lt. rail.

FYI to any others who might want it,
this light rail map I found online was helpful:

I think I might go that way, though
it's not ideal for tonight. Will post again

Actually just found this on group's website
so looks like it's still on :))

UPDATE: tomorrow's concert (June 29)
We will not move location if it rains. Since these thunderstorms seem to pass quickly, we will try to stick it out at Hamilton Park. If it's too bad to continue, we will reschedule tomorrow's concert (guitar and string music) for a later date which will be posted on the website. We hope to see you there, and we look forward to getting your input. Thanks!

Maybe this is a good place to post a question about JC and seniors. I'm looking for suggestions from retired people in this town who can pass along recommendations for services, classes, good doctors who take Medicare, tax issues, or other ways to life well as a retired person in JC...??

Anyone out there who has gone thru the 62-year mark and has tips to pass along?

Anyone out there on dental plan via Secure Horizons (thru Oxford)? My husband is retired, and the dentists on his plan that were mentioned on another JClist dental thread were all of the "DON'T go to this guy" ones...

Condo near P.O.?

Hi all,
A friend of mine is considering a move
to JC -- she wants a 2-3 bedroom condo.

The thing is, she wants to be very close to the Path AND her main requirement (due to her business which means picking up heavy packages from P.O. on a daily basis at times) is that she has to be VERY close to the main post office, like within a few blocks...

Any suggestions from people who live around there for the best buildings to check out right near the P.O.? As in a place with good management, something that was built with decent systems, etc?

I'm in Hamilton Park and just have no idea what is good value in that area...
Thanks for any info,
Tess1

Thanks so much PubliusIII,
I already sing weekly with a non-church group, but the lure of Palestrina is strong,
and if I could fit it in, I would. Also the commute of 2 blocks to rehearsal is appealing... :)

PubliusIII,
While searching for choral info on list I found this post -- can you say what the rehearsal schedule and etc is for singers at Holy Rosary?

I don't have a LOT of time to commit week to week, but wondering if one can join in to sing for certain occasions (like the recent Haydn mass, for ex., which I am sorry to have missed) or if it is only available as a permanent/weekly commitment...?

Publius,
Do you mean fewer local singers in that group?

I think that MAY be because they have increased the difficulty of the repertoire (sometimes they have to learn new pieces with VERY little rehearsal time, and have more performances per season, etc. so
I suppose there is a more pressing need for top-notch sight readers, more soloists, etc) and some really fine singers travel here from NY and NJ suburbs to rehearse and perform in the group...

They are going to Europe this summer,
and yesterday's concert was a great preview of that.

I wonder if more local people would go to concerts if they knew about the group... which is what prompted my post...

Glad to hear that you also like their work!

Choral Concert - Schola Cantorum on Hudson

Went to a fabulous concert Sunday 4pm at Holy Rosary on 6th St. between Monmouth and Brunswick. Saw some neighbors, but was surprised there weren't more.

If you don't know of this group, and are interested in classical music, check them out.

http://www.scholaonhudson.org/

The group has a fantastic sound. Many in the group are professional singers, and the group has sung at St. Patrick's Cathedral in NYC at Christmas.

The conductor, Deborah Simpkin King,
is clearly passionate about the group and the music. She's a musicologist and puts together REALLY interesting programs.
Nothing ho-hum about this group. WELL worth the price of admission. It struck me that I hadn't seen anything about them on this list, so I wanted to give a head's up to anyone interested in walking a few blocks (no waiting for trains :))
to hear some wonderful singing.

From the website:
?Schola Cantorum on Hudson is a bright spot in the ... landscape of classical offerings in the Jersey City-Hoboken area.
[SCH] has an energy and level of technical preparation that only few such nonprofessional groups in the state have.?

Re: Visitor Parking Permits/Parking Regulations

Friend's dad just got booted. They parked in Zone 6 for 2 hours, Zone 5 for 2,
then BACK to Zone 6 (which they'd been told 2 years previously was ok, after leaving the zone) for a few minutes. Within 5 minutes of return, the BOOT. Followed by the call to pay with credit card, the code
to release the boot, and then the drive to RETURN the boot within 24 hours (or $25/day additional charge applies for the boot itself!).
-----------
Field supervisor drove by and we talked to him. Here's what I understand from our conversation. (Don't take my word for it, check on your own!).

IF you park a little bit after 3 pm in a zone on, say, Monday, you are good till 10 a.m. on Tuesday.

(3-5 p.m. on Monday equals one day's 2 allowed hours,
8-10 a.m. on Tues. equals the following day's 2 allowed hours.)

Here's another point, which was news to me.

Is that clear? It seems like a VERY frustrating system to me, but this is how it is done, according to the person we spoke with.

Only plus is that now we can go get those $3 guest permits (each good for ONE day only)...
--------
ALSO we were told that the old leniency by the street-cleaning parking ticket people (where they'd beep to warn stragglers to move their car, so as to avoid a ticket) is not done now because SO many people complained about the NOISE of the beeping. SO they stopped doing that, now people complain about the fact that they don't get that warning anymore!

sell two family to great tenants?
#29

Hi,
My husband and I have started renting out one apt. in our 2-family home after occupying the whole building for the 1st 2 years.

We can sell the whole building outright and not pay a lot of tax (having lived here 2 years out of 5, and we would make under the tax limit for a couple's profit on their primary home) but if we condo the bldg and sell them only their apt., we will have to pay much more tax, yes?

We would like to consider helping them be able to own their apt (or eventually the bldg should we want to move) but we surely can't afford to take a big tax hit...

Is there a way to sell over time, or any other joint-ownership options we are not seeing? We don't know much about this, having only been sole owners of homess we lived in.

Thanks for any feedback.
Tess
