The new courthouse has all the appeal of a communist government building.

I'd love to knock down all of the buildings between Montgomery and Newark (btwn Marin and Washington). That square would make a great park (the trees are already there!).

I nominate the hideosity in Journal Square that is the Port Authority building. Ugly, concrete eyesore.

If you don't know which ugly gray building I'm talking about over by Wayne and Barrow, it's in the photo below that I borrowed from ianmac47's New York's Sixth blog.

Resized Image

For those who are curious, Jersey City Vibe has photos of what the place looked like years ago AND sketches of what it will be transformed into after the Columbus Corner complex is developed (assuming that project is still in the cards).

10 Ugly Buildings JERSEY CITY Would Be Better Off Without
Home away from home
Home away from home

I just picked up my copy of Thursday's AM New York and saw this on the cover:

10 TO LOSE: Ugly Buildings New York City Would Be Better Without

Of course, I immediately thought of how this kind of fun could be easily translated to JERSEY CITY!

My vote would be to get rid of the gray eyesore with maroon trim at the corner of Wayne and Barrow (because I have to walk by that mess practically every day).

If they don't restore the monstrosity to its former Victorian glory soon (as part of the Columbus Corner development), I hope they just bulldoze it and start over.

Anyone out there have 9 other buildings (or more!) that you think Jersey City would be better off without?

C'mon, I know you do -- let the hijinks begin!

Hi JCList, I'm looking for some advice about finding an apartment in Paulus Hook.

I've been obsessively watching craigslist and the few apartments in the neighborhood that aren't high rises seem to fly really quickly. I'd like to hear any success stories or recommendations for getting a good place (between $1500 and $2300, if it's relevant) in the neighborhood, and doing it without a realtor!

Thanks for your help.

huh? you can pretty much rent any 1br for that price. Just go into all the rental offices in the buildings and ask if they have units availiable. The twin tower by the goldman sachs building, gotham around the komegashi restaurant, and the new rentals by grove path.

How much was the Newman's lemonade? You can usually get it on sale at Shop Rite for $1.49 (half gallon).

good questions, Columbus has an approved redesign including median, bus pullovers etc.

two years ago, city engineers were lamenting delays during the downtown traffic study. the project is ready to go, pending administrative action and legislative approvals.....

time for an update.

Steve,

At the last HPHA meeting, the Summer 2008 Street Paving list was made available. I am happy to see that Grand, between Jersey and Marin will finally get paved. I do, though, wonder why Christopher Columbus is not on the list.

Columbus was touted by the city as the main artery to get traffic from the Turnpike to the waterfront. It is in such bad shape, however, that I think that people likely avoid it as much as possible. I know when we exit the turn pike, we get off of Columbus as soon as possible simply due to the condition of the roadway.

If people are indeed avoiding Columbus, that means they are driving on the smaller surface roads and into the residential neighborhoods. I cannot believe that this is faster, but it sure is less stress on a vehicle.

Any chance Columbus will be done sooner than later?

Went there tonight, and overheard one of the managers that its been a "soft opening" but it looked pretty busy to me. Was very clean and upscale looking to me. Close to UKrops in VA.

Got a bunch of their prepared meals, and I thought it was reasonably priced. The only other thing I got that I could compare was some Newman's Lemonade and it was about .50 cents cheaper than Fresh Direct.

Could some Mom do a comparison of prices and quality for us?

I asked the head of Public Works the same question about Christopher Columbus last month and was told the holdup for repaving was due to the path train being directly below that roadway. He said they were only allowed to patch not replace the surface due to the possible consequences from vibrations from the milling machines. Makes no sense to me but that?s what he said.

That's are crock. The buses and trucks hitting the potholes sometimes cause vibrations I feel in my house on Wayne Street. I am close to Varick and felt not one vibration last year when they milled that street.

The belgian block road in LSP is smoother to drive on than CCD.

Since the path is not going away, should we assume this "holdup" is permanent?

A three family is considered a multiple dwelling. Three units or more and/or 3 stories or more requires a sprinkler system.

They will sometimes waive this if you are not doing a gut reno., but the scope of your project (new addition, systems, interior reno.) is large enough that you will have to install the system.

You will also need to have a new 3" water main from the street brought in.

Figure 30-40K. Sorry.

Your architect or contractor should have known this/advised you.

I assume you've already gone through the Zoning Board to get approval for the addition and deck?

Wegman's looks for wealthy suburban locations close to or on major highways with large parking areas. We are more likely to get a Trader Joe's, a company which seems much more comfortable in an urban environment. The Trader Joe's on 14th Street near Union Square is a good example of what we could possibly expect (if only we were so lucky).

Well, we're not exactly a wealthy SUBURBAN location, but between 07030 (Hoboken) and 07302 (Downtown Jersey City, Newport, etc.) there sure is a measurable amount of wealth from what I can see.

Regarding being near a major highway, the I-78 Turnpike Extension as it approaches the Holland Tunnel qualifies to me as a pretty big roadway (if they were to put the store just north of 14th street or just south of 12th).

For the large parking area, they could create a parking garage like Home Depot did for its Holland Tunnel location.

Wegmans' location in Fairfax, Virginia features elevators as well as a parking garage. And Wegmans plans on having a parking garage at their Columbia, Maryland location. So doing something like that here could probably work here too.

But as Bill463 said (and as I have heard from my Wegmans-employed father), their plans for expansion are mainly in Maryland and Virginia.

Anyway, I need to occasionally remind myself why I live in a city. This is one of those occasions. It's not about the super-sized, big box, category killer, suburban shiny, mega grocery store chains.

I like going to the hardware store for hardware. And the produce market for fruit. And Ibby's for my falafel. And a florist or corner market for flowers. Heck, I even like the 99 cent stores on Newark Ave. (though having just one or two of them is more than sufficient!).

It's these smaller mom-and-pop businesses that make city living colorful and vibrant and different from the cookie-cutter stores in the newer suburbs. Since I'd like to see these places stay in business for a long time to come, it's important that I continue to patronize these sorts of shops.

But if I had to pick between Trader Joe's and Whole Foods for Downtown Jersey City, I'd go with Whole Foods hands down.

Then again, that long conversation has been going on over on this JCList thread for a few years now.

The carts need to be destroyed so there is a monitary loss to BJ's. That is the only thing that will get BJ's attention. The other part of the problem is the people stealing the carts and then dumping them for others to deal with. Posting their pictures is a great idea but be forewarned, alot of people may not take kindly to being photographed and you may have a fight on your hands. Posting the cart stealers is a proactive idea though!!!

By reading from the posts this past week it appears that there are carts at the following locations.

- Morgan and Marin (3 carts on the northeast corner).
- Jersey and 10th between 9th

- Sussex St and Washington St
- Warren and Grand
- Warren and Sussex (blue shoprite cart)

How about we take action and tackle the problem by bring them back to BJ's.

Anyone up for getting together lets say this Sunday at 10am, selecting a location listed above, if the cart is still there bring it back to BJ's. Meet at BJ's at 10:30 and bring them into the store and deliver them to the store manager.

Anyone interested?????

I can take the cart at 1st and Brunswick

To All,
Whenever you see a cart call the JCIA inspectors line -
(201) 432-4645 ext.671
I have and they have been very receptive to the problem. They will come , pick up the carts and then destroy them. I have called about several carts and they have been taken off the street. Most of the carts appear on Mondays because most people do their food shopping on weekends.
We, the public , have to work together and stay on top of these carts. The more carts picked up and destroyed the more loss to BJ's!!

Village,

You have good intensions, but what will that do? They'll thank you for saving them the effort and money from having to retrieve them.

The point is to keep them from getting the carts back. Destroy them, sell them, hide them, take them apart... don't end up doing them a favor.

There was a small fire at a house on 7th Street between Eire and Manila. I couldn't believe the turn out myself. I counted 7 big fire trucks plus all the smaller vehicles. I woke up thinking my whole block was on fire. There must have been close to 40 firemen out there.

From my vantage point directly across the street I couldn't even see flames, but today you can see some damage to the house. It makes me thankful we live so close to the fire house on 8th.
