"Richardson said she was contacted by Healy three weeks before the announcement about joining his ticket, but it didn't work out.

"When he asked me, I said that I would definitely think about it, but there were certain conditions that we had to work out beforehand," said Richardson. One of those conditions was that Richardson's son-in-law, an employee of the city's Division of Commerce would be considered for the position of director when former director Lenny Grenier stepped down on Jan. 31. But the position ended up going to another person."

"Even Willie Flood, who ran for mayor against Healy in the November special election, was not seen as a surprise candidate when she received Healy's endorsement for an at-large seat at a luncheon last Saturday at the Liberty House Restaurant.

"We met, and he asked me if I would run with him," she said. "I agreed, but I wanted to make sure that the young people who worked on my campaign would be offered some kind of employment since they worked for no money." Flood said the employment would either be on a city or county administrative level."

From the NYT article: Mr. Rabner said he expected that his office would handle a range of corruption cases, from small town conflicts of interest to major fraud and bribery cases.

?I think, to the public, there?s no right amount of corruption to tolerate,? he said.

Clearly, Jersey City voters see it differently than Mr. Rabner, as both Richardson and Flood were elected.

I can't imagine anyone buying that house as long as the shelter remains open, so let's give the guy some credit for his willingness to invest and raise his family there.

As distasteful as the appearance of a high-ranking government official seeming to get preferential treatment is, you make a good point as to why the process should allow for overrulings. The Historic Preservation Commission is concerned only with appearances and what appears to be slavish re-creation of the past, with no "real life" considerations or value of the, in this case, historic residents.

Yes, I often see them as they "seem to reluctantly clutch their Rutgers sweatshirts, resenting them for not being Harvard or another ivy league and for reminding the upwardly mobile soon to be middle-management types that they have not fully overtaken the blue-collar ways of this town, where many commute to their suburban NJ jobs via their no longer new Volkswagen Passats."

or something like that.

Neither FOLSP nor anyone else could stop Christie Whitman from turning one of the last huge expanses of green into a marina/drydock/parking lot. 9/11 "helped" as the rest of the grass was turned into a park-and-ride lot in record time for thousands of bus and ferry commuters who never came. McGreevey's win over Schundler kept LSP from being turned into a water park. So why does anyone think they're going to win this one?

It's a state park and the Gov gets what the Gov wants.

You'd better have a lot of virtual pins for all the crimes reported here:

1. Youths wearing long white t-shirts, probably gangmembers
2. Youths not wearing long white t-shirts, probably gangmembers
3. Yuppies using dead-end street as park, probably gangmembers
4. Dog off the leash, children menaced
5. Children off the leash, dogs menaced
6. CRAPKINS!!
7. Happy Hour at LITM not happy today
8. Lamb at "It's Greek to Me" was off
9. Black men looking at white women, suspect hate crime
10. White men looking at black women, suspect hate crime
11. White men looking at white men, don't know what to think, but strangely arousing
12. Neighbor's grill too close to my condo (but more importantly, he's NOT cooking Kobe beef)
13. Jersey City apparently not Georgetown, the suburbs, or Australia
14. Mayor drinking beer, DOMESTIC GODDAMN BEER!
15. Steve Fulop apparently can't fly
16. That cute girl in the office won't go out with me

The list of crimes goes on...

There is no need for any "memorial" of any kind,

There is not a chance that anyone will forget

Such things are generally in embarrassingly poor taste,
and they tend to make people more angry and ashamed than reflective.

Skip the whole thing, and spend the money on

Should I make others pay for my kids so I can stay home and drink 40s on the stoop?
If you can't afford to have three kids don't have them, if you can't afford to live in an upscale neighborhood move out.
Sorry, but I make sacrifices for myself and I'm not woking so others can have a free ride.
It really hurts when I'm on my way to work and I walk past the projects to see people still drinking from the night before as the sit in their own chicken bones and broken bottles. When I come home they are sitting on my steps leaving their crap for me to clean up.
F that. I don't care where they go as long as its far from my house.

"At this festive season of the year, Mr. Scrooge," said the gentleman, taking up a pen, "it is more than usually desirable that we should make some slight provision for the poor and destitute, who suffer greatly at the present time. Many thousands are in want of common necessaries; hundreds of thousands are in want of common comforts, sir."
"Are there no prisons?" asked Scrooge.
"Plenty of prisons," said the gentleman, laying down the pen again.
"And the Union workhouses?" demanded Scrooge. "Are they still in operation?"
"They are. Still," returned the gentleman, "I wish I could say they were not."
"The Treadmill and the Poor Law are in full vigour, then?" said Scrooge.
"Both very busy, sir."
"Oh! I was afraid, from what you said at first, that something had occurred to stop them in their useful course," said Scrooge. "I'm very glad to hear it."
"Under the impression that they scarcely furnish Christian cheer of mind or body to the multitude," returned the gentleman, "a few of us are endeavouring to raise a fund to buy the Poor some meat and drink, and means of warmth. We choose this time, because it is a time, of all others, when Want is keenly felt, and Abundance rejoices. What shall I put you down for?"
"Nothing!" replied Scrooge.
"You wish to be anonymous?"
"I wish to be left alone," said Scrooge. "Since you ask me what I wish, gentlemen, that is my answer. I don't make merry myself at Christmas, and I can't afford to make idle people merry. I help to support the establishments I have mentioned: they cost enough: and those who are badly off must go there."
"Many can't go there; and many would rather die."
"If they would rather die," said Scrooge, "they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population. ... It's enough for a man to understand his own business, and not to interfere with other people's. Mine occupies me constantly. Good afternoon, gentlemen!"

There are no "state property taxes". The reason the amount is more is because your mortgage co escrows more than it needs in case (or more correctly "because") property taxes increase and god knows they're not going to front their own money for taxes. They may also be collecting for mortgage insurance.

Sounds like you may have purchased a tax abated unit whose abatement has just expired. "Improvements" refers to the actual building and condo units and has nothing to do with recent improvements. Check the online inquiry and see if there were just "Land" assessments prior to this tax bill.

That may be why the owner sold.

Yes, I know an independent can vote in a NJ primary and I think it's a good thing. I agree that Common Cause NJ etc should promote that....

Not quite - per the State board of elections:

http://www.state.nj.us/lps/elections/faq_voter_doe.html#a26

Independents voting in their FIRST primary can declare at the polls. After that, you need to file a party declaration 50 days prior to the primary.

First, build your window boxes out of reclaimed, historic barn planks
http://www.blacksfarmwood.com/07_12_03.html

Make sure they're held together with historic nails:
http://www.vandykes.com/product/02220266/
or better yet, microbrew your own glue from rendered animal carcasses (VERY historic)

and, of course, only heirloom tomatoes will do:

Crummy location - no parking, in the midst of subsidized housing, not really easy walking distance from the PATH. But, like other self-important organizations, they had to have a "showcase" building. Had they considered 111 1st St, we might have that quality urban institute AND studios, but I guess that was too downmarket for their tastes.

Someday, when the Powerhouse District is flourishing, they may realize their mistake.

Open question to Mayor Healy -

Where do the funds for Ms. Pignataro's salary come from?

And while I'm here: How much litter/garbage/etc. could be collected with a budget of 76K? Walked the streets lately, your honor?

From the city's website: Maria Pignataro, Press Secretary

government 101: obviously, her salary comes from the same buckets (taxes, state aid, fees, fines, etc, etc) that every other employee's comes from.

for a city jersey city's size, the mayor's having a press secretary seems to me a justifiable expense. part of that job (aside from dressing the mayor) is to promote the city, which in turn brings in investment, tourists, etc, etc.

as for garbage - what annual salary would you accept to pick up garbage? $25,000? $30,000, $10,000? let's say a living wage of $12,000 (plus benefits? i wouldn't do it without benefits). so the city could hire maybe 4-5 new employees. would that really make a dent? maybe that money would be better spent hiring cops who would actually issue tickets to litterers?
