Re: Property Taxes - 2F used as 1F

Home away from home

You pay taxes on the assessed value of the home. Forget about 1 or 2 familes. Our assessment is at 28%, which means it is time for another reval. When the last reval happened the city was on a calendar year, not a fiscal year. My taxes jumped from $3,000 to $16,000. It the city was on a fiscal it would have been $11,000. I have attended county meetings Jersey City is paying more proportionally due to the sales prices fuled by tax abated properties. Tax abated properties are not ratables. Ratables add to the value of the city and lessen the burden for all of us. Abatements are contracts in which the city keeps the money but the value of the sale is held against the homeowner. Property that is selling at market rate is used when the county strikes the budget. Our taxes goes up to make up for the low assessment (28%). On top of that we are losing state aid for the board of ed due to the wealth of the city. In the last two years we paid an addition $10.8 million to the board of ed which is more than a $2.00 increase. Additional information is on my web site www.speaknj.com

Sex offender working for Bolden Cunningham's senate campaign

Sex offender working for Bolden Cunningham's senate campaign

A Jersey City man convicted of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl has played a role in the state senate campaign of Sandra Bolden Cunningham, a role that included collecting signatures for her nominating petitions.

Russell Wallace, 45, was convicted in 1999 of aggravated sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child after he sexually assaulted a 13-year-old girl in his Jersey City home in 1997.

Wallace, then 37, was sentenced to 26 years. A state appellate court later reversed the decision and sent it back to Superior Court in Jersey City for a new trial, where he was found guilty a second time by a jury. He was sentenced to 15 years in that case, according to court records.

In January, 2005, Wallace was paroled from jail, spending less than four years total behind bars, according to the state Department of Corrections.

Wallace, a registered sex offender, entered into Jersey City's Second Chance Program, which was created by Bolden Cunningham's late husband, Mayor Glenn D. Cunningham. Bolden Cunningham remains a vocal supporter of the program, and Wallace wanted to show his gratitude by joining the campaign, according to Roger Jones, a spokesman for Bolden Cunningham.

"The goal is to provide work for people who made mistakes when they were young," said Jones.

When told that Wallace was 37 when the assault took place, Jones replied, "Well, he still has long life ahead of him."

Wallace, a volunteer, not a paid employee, collected hundreds of signatures for Bolden Cunningham's candidacy for the Democratic nomination to the state senate but those signatures were later thrown out after it was discovered that he was ineligible to vote because of his conviction.

"Nobody should be bringing people who molested young children into neighborhoods to campaign," said Assemblyman Lou Manzo, D-Jersey City, who is running against Bolden Cunningham for the senate.

Wallace once served as a commissioner on board of the Jersey City Redevelopment Agency, and former Jersey City Mayor Bret Schundler appointed him to serve on the city's ethical standards board.

Schundler came under fire after Wallace was hired as a civilian employee in the police department while the sexual assault charges were pending. Police officials protested the hire and Wallace did not keep the job.

Re: $106M vote of confidence for Downtown Jersey City - a new chapter for the city

Nonsense! A little history- St. Peter's Church on Grand St. is the oldest Catholic Church in Jersey City. However, the present building was built in 1960. The first building fell during its contruction over 100 years ago. The ground could not support the building. The second building was condemned by the city because it was collapsing. The second building is similar to St. Francis Church on 31th Street in NYC. The third structure, which is the present building, floods when there is a great deal of rain. Take yourself to the public library and look at old maps of Jersey City. You will see the Hudson River covered many areas of Paulus Hook. The area was filled in with New York's garbage over 100 years ago.
When you place pilings in a ground to support a large building it is similar to placing a baby in a bath tub. The water table rises.

Of course, we look forward to more traffic. Plus those buildings are located in flood areas. In order to support those structures, more pilings need to go into the ground. This will raise the water table and cause flooding to the small surrounding buildings. Every building on the waterfront has received an abatement, which means they will receive an abatement. Abatements hurt the small homeowner because weathier residents means less state aid for the local Board of Ed. However, abated buildings do not pay Board of Ed taxes. In the last two years, the city loss $10.8 million that had to be made up in local taxes. Taxes increased $2 more dollars to the loss state aid. So who does this benefit?
