Re: ????Info on obtaining R1 driveway variance???

The problem with adding a driveway in front of a home in a city environment, legal or illegal, is that it trashes the streetscape and is aesthetically unattractive. Additionally, as mentioned above, it limits the already rare space regarding street parking.

The problem is that Newport theatre is far from an independent theatre. They show first run big bucks Hollywood movies.

In addition to Mr. Bado's elitist attitude, this certainly is a deterrent. It's easier for revenue-generating movie-goers from Jersey City to take the PATH to Film Forum or IFC Cinema. As a matter of fact, it's easier for residents of Hoboken living at the other end of town to go into NYC for movies. Bado's unwelcoming words will keep me away.

On a positive note, the most amazing part of this hearing was the absolute passion of those tax-paying, registered voters who spoke out against the abatement. If we can increase this zeal and involvement by the citizenry, there is a chance that those who voted for the abatement will not see the light of day after the next election.

From what I recollect, Melendez (who did not attend last night?s council meeting) has until August 1 to submit his plan of action to remedy the problems he believes are at hand with Animal Control. Who then will review this document to ascertain if it encompasses all of the issues recently made public? Once that is settled, he will apparently have six months to correct the deficiencies and abusive/neglectful treatment of animals. What if this does not occur? Will it be just another slap on the wrist and back to the drawing board for the animal advocates? Although I do understand the reason Fulop suggested this plan of action (this or nothing), there are too many lose ends not addressed at all.

I?ve lived here for less than a year but have become well-informed about this city?s politics. After attending last night?s council meeting, my worst fears were realized. Jersey City is indeed a Banana Republic just like my former home, New Orleans. Two councilperson?s antics are foremost in my mind. Lipski?s behavior was not only unprofessional but reprehensibly smug. In light of his recent drunken piss fest, one would think he would wish to stay quietly in the background as opposed to displaying the behavior of a vulgar buffoon. Brennan used every chance he could to waste valuable speaking time by verbally ass-kissing the mayor, showering him with adoration and glory (King?s New Clothes Syndrome). All save for Fulop should be ashamed of themselves. They are not deserving of the public office they hold. And finally, shame on those who voted to keep Healy and his cronies in office and shame on those who did not vote at all. World Class city in the making? Hardly.

That's right, get the anti-feral cat residents of this city more worked up than they already are concerning this issue.

One of many studies:

http://www.ci.berkeley.ca.us/ContentDisplay.aspx?id=9714

Are Feral Cats a Risk to Public Health?

A study conducted by Stanford University's Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) found virtually no risk to humans from feral cats and diseases associated with cats. EHS also concluded, after consultation with the Santa Clara County Health Department and Stanford's Department of Comparative Medicine, that there was a general consensus that feral cats pose virtually no health and safety risk to individuals.

I see some things never change. Back in 1980 while living in Hoboken, I received a PSE&G bill for $5,000. It was eventually ascertained that I was billed for the entire eight apartment building?s two month bill but not after numerous visits to their offices and threats of being disconnected. The rep behind the desk was so sinister in demanding I pay up now, I?ll never forget him. At least now they seem to be more customer-friendly.

Thank you, Super_Furry. I couldn't have said that any better myself. I am a Non-Ward E homeowner, paying taxes, spending a lot of money in Jersey City, using contractors who are residents to restore my home, I vote, I am concerned about crime and quality of life issues throughout the entire city, I am law-abiding, I care about my neighborhood and so on. Why should I accept lower safety standards? I've mentioned before on this list that until we all see each other as one, there will be no positive growth.

I mean no disrespect to the family and friends involved in this tragedy by going off-topic but the below comment must be addressed. Webmaster, please transfer if you feel it is appropriate.

Surely, you did not wish to insult those of us who do not reside downtown. That would simply be bad-mannered and ineffective in solving our urban issues. There will never be a total revitalization of this city with such an unconstructive approach. Although we reside in many neighborhoods, we are one community who should be working together without offending one another because of where we reside. Without a positive outlook and care for others who have chosen to live in Jersey City, your neighborhood will not be any better than what you perceive mine to be. You moan about ?gentrification? taking too long yet you drive away any critical mass from other areas by claiming downtown to be an island floating is a pool of ??.? thereby giving people the notion that they should stay as far away from certain areas of the city. Not only do we desperately need stronger ?new school? leadership in this city but citizens who view all of us as one.

First in importance, it is a terrible thing to lose a member of any community to violence. My heart goes out to family and friends of this beloved man. The police program mentioned below worked well in New Orleans as well as the hiring of an outsider police chief at a time when crime was at an all time high and morale at an all time low. We need new and innovative leadership in this city. There should be zero tolerance when it comes to crime. May you all be safe tonight and forever in the city you have chosen to live.

I'm new here, long time lurker. I live right around the corner.

I see a lot of people saying we need more cops, and I agree. However, the city can do it at minimal cost, if they enact an auxiliary police program.

I just moved here, and back home most cities had it. The deal was they send you to the academy part time at night (for a few months) and give you the same training and you work 12 hours or so a month for free to the city (with benefits if you get injured, etc.).

This would upset some of the high pay senior cops get (84k) around here, but would provide a benefit. Where I lived, gangs had moved into the suburbs and were shooting and burning houses. The adults in the neighborhood went through (9 of us) and patrolled on our nights off. In 2 months the problems stopped.

Let citizen's take care of thier neighborhood.

I'll start the flame war I see too often on here: Criminals have guns, why not let those who went through the background check and invasive gun buying process here to go to training (same armed guards get) and carry weapons for the protection of themselves?

Why let the "bosses" of this S/City take it back?!!! Good service, and free!

-Proximity to NYC
-Great neighbors
-Affordable housing (in our area)
-Star Bar
-Another Man's Treasure
-Balance Hair Salon
-Grace Bakery and Restaurant
-The neighborhood bodega
-Less sin taxes than NYC
-Seasonal Farmer's Markets
-Diversity and corresponding cultures, especially restaurants and groceries
-The stunning view from Liberty State Park

We've only been here since August and have so much more to discover. Looking forward to warmer weather (and less renovation/restoration) to more appreciate our city.

I too am very disappointed with the poor bus service to and from our particular area. The 87 is jam packed heading from Journal Square to Gates and the condition of the interior is deplorable. At least they run more frequently than the Bergen Avenue buses. I wouldn't even call that line "service." I've waited on more than one occasion for 40 minutes to get to JSQ. If you are not standing close to the middle of the road, the driver will not stop. I guess I was naive thinking that standing right next to the bus stop sign does not mean one is waiting for the bus. Thankfully, I get dropped off at the JSQ PATH in the morning and in the evenings, I now take a taxi. Otherwise, the point of moving closer to NYC is moot considering the travel time. At this point, I am seriously considering bringing my car here and getting monthly parking at the station.

Regarding Red Bank, I was stunned that this town was referred to as "the Soho of NJ" for many reasons. The art galleries are your typical suburban fare of talent, there are only a few good restaurants, middle-of-the-road nightlife and a very white bread atmosphere. The positive side is the town has a fantastic antique mall and one independent movie theater. All I can say is that after five years of a four hour door to door commute into the city, I'm happy to be here in Jersey City. Additionally, you have to work in the city in order to receive enough salary to afford to live in Red Bank and the surrounding area so there's no way to escape the horrendous and costly commute (if that is where you choose to live).

Taxi service would have been a problem also. There was a two hour wait to get into the Holland Tunnel and an hour long trek through it early Saturday a.m. beginning around 1:30. We were told it was due to construction and police action. We bailed and made our way to the GW. In the end, we got home at 5:3O a.m. A very frustrating 4 hour ordeal.

Until the public transportation within Jersey City is plentiful and reliable, becoming car-less is not an option for most people living here. My neighborhood's bus transportation to Journal Square is such a crap shoot, I take a cab home on most evenings. Thankfully, I get dropped off in the mornings but the one time I had to take the bus, I waited 40 minutes. I think we'll keep the car.

Just a quick note about Accomplished. We called regarding a gutter problem. They came, estimated the cost of gutter job as well as some chimney repair. We provided a deposit and scheduled an appointment for the work to be done. That was one month ago. Although phone calls are returned, there is always some excuse for not showing up or scheduling another appointment. As apologetic as the supervisor has been, we have grown impatient, temporarily repaired the gutter ourselves and will be asking for return of the deposit.

This is my experience with them. Hopefully this will help out other people: We used them this summer for my condo building. They ripped up everything and put down a new roof. 2 weeks later - a strong storm hit and the leaks were worse than the original old roof. It was absolutely shocking how much damage was done. They came out and fixed - or basically finished installing the flashing they never bothered to install. The new roof came with a 20year and 24hour service numbers which don't mean anything beside - we will come out and fix it for free. This doesn't mean they will fix any of the damage that happens from their bad work. They have different teams of roofers and the owner/mel/foremen look over (NOT WELL) at what they do. These different teams or technicians work under a seperate business name - so they seem to be subcontracted out by Accomplished.

BTW - The 24 hour number goes to a machine, or if someone answers it they then leave a message on someones voice mail to deal with in the morning. It is by no means 24hr service number.

There have been no leaks (that one can tell) until this recent storm. But yet again the drywall seams are busting open. I've called the wonderful Accomplished number and they will be back on Friday to fix, or find a fix, or deal with my extremely angry lovely self.

Please please please think more than twice about using them to fix or replace the roof of your homes.
