Xerxes does have a good memory but he and all of you get an ?F? in spelling. I remember all of the controversy I do remember they tried many different things there. The Gay Bar and the Teen Club are the ones that I remember..err.. reading about ..not attending. I think they tried to have big name rap concerts there. I also remember the owners supposedly had ties to organized crime. I think they somehow owned other clubs in Hoboken???

I have been preaching to you hipsters and yuppies to read/buy the Jersey Journal for months now. It is a pretty good JC paper. (hmmm?although the only JC paper) Their online version actually has a great archive. I pulled the below stories using ?Coliseum? in the search. (?Coliseum? not ?Colosseum?) They will give you the title, date, and a few sentences(see below). You have to pay a small fee to get the rest of the piece. I will not spend one thin dime on a piece for you ?rich? downtown yuppies to view. Pull it yourself!!

JJ historical archives start from 1867 (yes just think you can now trace JC?s corruption way back to 1867)

Thanks for confirming that a cop party err ..I mean gathering actually took place. I thought I was dreaming, but I do remember actually counting the marked vehicles. Those were just the ones on the street not the ones in the full parking lot. It sounds like they were from all over the city and not just one district.

Do you really think good old Pasquale would let those guys starve..come on.

So the cops go to a meeting on the citizens dime to find out how the state is going to screw then while they are in turn screwing the citizens for those few hours..how rich is that! (no pun intended)

I wish I could walk off my job for a few hours and attend a grip session in a nice restaurant. Difference being in my case a few numbers wouldn?t get crunched!! No harm no foul!

I am pro JC cop but the sight of all of those vehicles did kind of piss me off a little. I have been to JC cop ?parties ? back in the day so my imagination really kicked in. They didn?t have any ?short people? there did they?

Fat_ass?I was going to ask a question similar to what you are saying.

Since the Mayor is really the top cop in Jersey City. He is the one who is really arresting you. How can his daughter prosecute any one from JC? A defendant?s lawyer could just say she was bias if he/she doesn?t like the outcome. Unless the court informs the defendant about the daughters relationship to the Mayor before hand. Sort of like when they question potential jurors? if they know anyone in law enforcement, court system, etc.

Anyone have the answer, just curious. (or am I over thinking... I do smell wood burning!)

At least today I heard on the radio that Rt 7 was closed because of flooding. Rt 440 is closed down by Home Depot . Also some closures on rt 440 down by the Bayonne city line.

I took the Bayonne entrance to the TP today no problems.

Here is the question of the day (and yesterday). Why would cars #2, #3, and #4 even attempt a crossing if #1 didn?t make it.

wow... I didn't go in the last few years...didn't know they now charged for the hay ride down to the fields!!!!

Hmmm just saw this in the link....

"Pick your own pumpkins any day of the week. On weekdays, you are welcome to grab a wheelbarrow and walk to our fields to pick your own Pumpkins, Gourds and Indian Corn. On weekends and Columbus Day, you can take a Hayride to the Pumpkin Patch from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. "

They never let you walk down to the fields before...

You take a little hay ride to the valley where the pumpkin?s are. Beautiful setting.

Funny? I don?t know if they still do this?in early October they placed ad?s in the JJ. Picture of a little ?city? kid yelling to his mom. ?Yo I want to pick me some pumpkins!. The ad went something like that.. kind of creepy.

Catherine Healy Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy?s daughter, was sworn in as Assistant Prosecutor in the Hudson County Prosecutor?s Office on Sept. 20, according to Prosecutor Edward DeFazio.

Healy graduated from Seton Hall University in 2009 and clerked for Hudson County Superior Court Judge Kevin Callahan from August 2009 to August 2010.

?Catherine came very highly recommended,? DeFazio said. (Hmmmm NO DUH!!) He added that she will work in the Appellate Court.

?I love my daughter very much and I am proud of her,? said Mayor Healy. ?She worked hard to get through law school and to pass the bar, and she clerked for a year for Judge Kevin Callahan, who has the busiest criminal case calendar in the State of New Jersey. I am confident that she will continue her hard work on behalf of the people of Hudson County in the Prosecutor?s Office under the leadership of Ed DeFazio.?

Right MDM.

I could see why they poured the money and know how into fixing the rt 1&9/440 and Communipaw flooding. When that flooded you could not get OUT of JC onto the Turn Pike. (teachers, cops, and firemen couldn't get home) Also you could not get INTO JC from exit 15E. The traffic would be backed up onto the Turn Pike.

Maybe NOT fixing the rt 440 (Home Depot) flooding and the Newark Ave. (Samson Stone) flooding is a good idea. It is after all a good way to keep those creepy Bayonne and Kearney people out of JC.

True!

It?s not like they can?t fix the problems either. I will give them credit a few years ago they actually fixed the flooding problem over at rt 1&9/rt 440 and Communipaw. That was a nightmare during heavy rain, you couldn?t get into JC.

I can?t believe that the old owners of the Colonette or the new owners of the JC Diner never sued. The water covers the street and parking lot around their property. It usually comes up to their front door steps.

As a JC lifer I find it amazing that the flooding problems in JC/Hudson County never get fixed this has been going on for the last 30+ years.

Today the usual suspects?.

- Massive lake (lake 1) on rt 440 down by Home Deport/JC Diner.

- Massive lake (lake 2) at the end of Newark Ave going toward Witt Penn bridge 5 cars floating.

- Haven?t seen Westside and Sip but that should be lake 3 by now.

- Saw two cars floating in South Kearny under the Pulaski Skyway past the Sky Way diner.

- Forget about route 7 going toward Kearny.

Your tax dollars (not) at work!!

Big cop party at Puccini’s Tues 9/28/10 5:00 p.m. ???????

Home away from home

I drove by Puccini?s restaurant on Westside and Broadway at around 5:00 pm Tuesday and saw 12 marked cop cars, a couple of police motorcycles, and a police emergency truck. I thought angry terrorists hit Puccini?s at first..but the food isn?t bad enough to warrant an attack on Pasquale . All of the vehicles were parked in spots along Broadway and Westside. Not a copper in sight. I then drove back around 6:30 pm there were even more marked cop cars lining the street I swear there had to be 20 to 30 cop cars.

Does anyone know what the shindig was for? Criminals must of had a field day between 5:00 pm and ???

Re: Society Hill Jersey City
Home away from home
Home away from home

( I posted this a while ago when there was a ?discussion? about luxury properties in JC. Of course SH was s*** on by the DTJC crowd I guess it reminds them all too much of the suburban life that mommy and daddy provided. Funny I am a JC lifer all of my friends and their family?s moved out of ?nasty? JC to the burbs years ago. It is so nice to now see every one of my friend?s kids coming back to ?nasty? JC to buy or rent. If they knew that their parents and grandparents let their JC properties go for next nothing they would s*** themselves! Especially the friends who sold their DTJC 4 story brick row houses for 40K.

***
To the comment about SH and PL being isolated:

From what I remember PL is isolated. I have been to The Point a few times for dinner and saw only a few small stores inside PL?s walls. I would guess you would need a car to get to anything good. Funny I could shoot myself, years ago when the PL project went bankrupt they couldn?t give away the condo?s. I think they were selling the remaining condos for around 50K. (that?s 5-0 not 5-0-0)

SH is a totally different story it is not isolated in the least bit. Everything you need is right there. You can walk to any number of these fine establishments. (can you walk to any retail in DTJC, is there any retail that lasts more than a few month?s in DTJC?).

Stadium Plaza - Pathmark, Stadium Pizza (the best pizza in JC), K-Mart (the coffee in the K-Mart Caf? outshines Starbucks Crap-o-chino any day of the week!), Ruby Dollar Store, National Wholesale Warehouse, Pathmark Liquors, Pet Land, Nail Place, JC Diner, Wendy?s, Shoe repair, Dry cleaners. (a lot of SH?ers skip Pathmark and food shop in the Bayonne South Cove Mall?s Stop & and Shop a few miles away)

Danforth Plaza - Vinnie?s III Pizza, Wonder Bagel, Chinese Fun Buffet(gotta love the name), Rite Aid, Laundry/Cleaners, Subway, PNC Bank, Hair Place.

Bayonne City Line - Mickey D?s, Dunkin Donuts, Walgreens, Banks, Car Rental, DMV, Domino?s, Meat City (don?t ask).

Up the hill on Danforth ? Jule?s (great Italian food), Old man snot bar?s, Florist, Bakeries.

Across the highway you have Home Depot and Raymore and Flannigan.

If you are fit enough (they just put in a new side walk along rt 440 from SH to Lowes)you can walk over to the Hudson Mall, Toys R Us, Movie Theater, Pizza Hut, Applebee?s, Lowes, R and S auto, 440 Farms, Party City, BK, and lets NOT forget POPEYES!!!!.

Sounds like SH is very ?pedestrian friendly" right hipsters? And sorry there are no bike shops or second hand stores in the area. (Hmm although K-Mart has a sweet bike section and National Wholesale has some nice discontinued stuff)

SH isolated I think NOT!! And if you think living in SH doesn?t give you that ?urban living experience??just go over to Pathmark on the first of the month. You will get enough ?urban living experience? to last you a life time.

More on SH?.
- 3 phases maybe 1450 units.
- Phase 1 nicest. Feels more open. Has cement block construction between units. There was a fire in one of the buildings back in Jan 2010. The fire was contained to just the one section of the building. Three units were damaged. The fire was on the second floor. The first floor unit suffered water damage. The 3rd floor unit smoke and some fire damage. The ?match stick? construction held up.
- Phase 2 most of the units have garages, streets are narrow, feels closed in.
- Phase 3 (Droyer?s Point) they are the expensive condo?s, really nice but not for $500K. I don?t need a $30K elevator I?ll take the stairs!! (Prince the Pimp lived in Phase 3, hmmm gotta look into the pimp?in life must pay well) This phase is the one that is having on going problems with fire sprinklers.

Chromium - Phase 1 didn?t have any contamination. Phase 2 had some but it was cleaned up and taken away. Phase 3 had the most contamination it was capped with a clay barrier. (hmmm)The big chromium dump is across the highway from Home Depot, that is where the old factories that produced it were located. They have been carting away the soil for years now. Also they just started the soil cleanup process on the property next to Home Depot. Both areas will be included in the new Bay Front project. (see below)

Don?t forget the people in SH know what their units were built on it was all documented in the purchase agreement. People in DTJC and other parts of JC don?t have a clue. (yes you are all clueless, especially the crew down in New Port, see what NP was built on) The yellow chromium waste from the factories on Rt 440 was given away free to contractors who used it as fill on construction projects. It is ALL over the city. Funny they also gave it to residents claiming it would make their vegetable gardens bug free..no DUH! I can just hear Billy Mays pitching the yellow powder now..Great for your gardens not only does it kill pests it will make your vegetables grow 5 times in size!! Amazing!! But wait! There?s more! (we miss you Billy)

To clear up the urban legend of people glowing in SH ..they don?t. The popular show Myth Busters did a piece on it once. They asked 100 SH residents if they would like to take part in an experiment. They took the 100 residents and herded them into a large empty factory. They turned off the lights and not one of the residents glowed. Adam and Jamie were quick to declare the myth about SH people glowing..FALSE!! (although Jamie did make them turn the lights on and off 3 times to be sure, he claimed Buster?s nose glowed) Would it really be all that bad if you glowed? Just think of all the money you would save on your PSE&G bills. Night light? I don?t need no stinking night light!)

Smell from across the bay ? There was a tallow rendering plant across the bay years ago. Look it up if you don?t know what it is? quite foul. (here?s a hint did you ever see those garbage trucks with pieces of meat and fat hanging off the back? Get stuck in traffic behind one of those beauties on a hot day..PU) On hot summer nights the smell was smelly to say the least. (?oh oh that smell?) The SH Assoc. gave all the residents the number of the EPA. Every time the residents ?smelled that smell? they called the number to log it. The place kept getting fined to the point where they I think went out of business or installed some kind of anti stink equipment. So sorry Pepe Le Pew.

Population Nice mix of people, friendly, young and old, retired and just starting out. Refreshing to see hot young hard bodies at the pools in the summer..err..oops never mind that part. A lot of cops, firemen, teachers, politicians, and other city/county workers.

Transportation Society Hill bus stop right outside the gates. 5 minutes to Westside light rail station, 20 minutes to Journal Square. Five minutes to Bayonne New Jersey Turnpike entrance by car. I think there are also private shuttles out of Phase 3. If you like you can also get rides off of the SH old timers who have nothing else to do besides their weekly AC trip. They would gladly give you a ride for free if you would just listen to one of their many ?stories?? maybe the bus is a better idea.

Noise What noise..if your neighbor is noisy you just rat on them to the SH Association and they get ?fixed? immediately. No year long Christmas displays or garden gnomes down in SH either!! Put a garden gnome out and the SH Assoc. will be all over your a** in a NY minute! Travelocity gnome don?t even think about it!

Schools/Sports Our Lady of Mercy grammar school across rt 440 in Country Village. Marist High School on the JC/Bayonne boarder. Country Village District 7 little league baseball. CYO flag football and basketball.

Garbage pickup there is none you bring your trash to the recycling center. There are shoots for paper, glass, and trash. You don?t have to deal with looking at people?s gross curd side trash while walking down the streets. No dirty diapers plastered to the street. No cat ripped open plastic bags displaying rice, coffee grinds, banana?s, tallow (did you look it up?) and God only knows what else. And no dam 2:00 am garbage truck noise!! Also no need to track down your trash can in the morning. I hear some people in JC actually have LoJack attached to their cans.

***
PS ? I will give you a hot tip. If you have some extra cash buy something by SH as an investment. (if you don?t want to live there then just rent it out) Check out the Master Plan for the area the project is called Bay front. It goes from SH down to the Hudson Mall. Hopefully some day it will get built.(I am banking on it!!)

Resized Image

More on Bay front (hey when it gets built SH won?t be so ?isolated? anymore.

Jersey City man robbed of $59K in jewelry

A Jersey City man was robbed of nearly $60,000 in jewelry on a Downtown street in the early morning hours Saturday, officials said.

At 12:30 a.m., officers responded to Columbus Drive and Brunswick Street and the 31 year-old Montgomery Street resident said a man approached him and pointed a silver revolver at him, reports said.

The robber said ?Run your jewels,? and the victim told police he handed over a watch, chain and bracelet valued at $59,000, reports said.

Anyone with information about this robbery is asked to call Jersey City police tip line at (201) 547-JAIL. All calls will be kept confidential.

As stated it is on the site of the all time worst housing project in the city. Below is a piece I found in the local paper about the new rentals. I am pretty sure it is all low income rentals, except for a few market rate ones.

The Westside light rail is no where near that area. Maybe you have the wrong area there is a project directly across the street from the Westside light rail station. But that is on the other side of the city. Over by the New Jersey College. That area is up and coming. I think they are condo?s but I bet you can rent also. They are called ?City Homes at Westside Station?.

There is also a new rental project in Bayonne across the street from a light rail station called ?City View? http://www.alexancityview.com/

66 NEW HOMES DEBUT

Wednesday, February 04, 2009
By CHARLES HACK
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

Former residents and staff of the A. Harry Moore public housing complex reunited yesterday for the grand opening of 66 new homes built at the site of the notorious public housing complex.

The Gloria Robinson Court Apartments, a low-rise development on Duncan Avenue near Routes 1 & 9, are replacing the 664-unit public housing development that consisted of seven, 12-story towers.

Among the guests attending the event was 80-year-old Gloria Robinson, for whom the development is named. The mother of 11, a former Jersey City Housing Authority commissioner and Duncan Avenue resident for 40 years, worked tirelessly to improve the quality of life for her fellow residents.

Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy and Bishop Robert Blount of Jersey City's Emmanuel Pentecostal Church, who managed the buildings from 1981 until 2004, also attended.
Robinson led a movement to remove a previous housing administration in the 1970s when residents endured non-working elevators, broken heating units and trash in the hallways.

Robinson said she was "ecstatic" to have the development named after her, but also loved the community that was there before the residents were relocated for construction.
"It broke my heart when I saw the old buildings being torn down," Robinson said. "I hope as many of the people who were relocated come back to these beautiful homes as possible."

Of the 66 apartments, 58 are considered affordable and eight are market-rate rentals, officials said. The development includes six one-bedroom units, 28 two-bedroom units, 26 three-bedroom units and four six-bedroom units.

Tenants of the A. Harry Moore complex who were relocated are given priority on the waiting list.

The Gloria Robinson Court Homes is part of the three-phase HOPE VI Revitalization program, which when complete will replace 664 public housing units.

The second phase is in full swing and will deliver 78 more units, said JCHA Executive Director Maria Maio. Three towers still have to be demolished, Maio said, and the next round of HOPE VI federal funds will allow the third and final phase to get under way. The total number of new units planned for the development is 326....

Home away from home

The whole Garrison / Journal Square area is true urban living. Just what you yuppies/hipsters are looking for right? Shadrock had a good description of the area. ( I agree it could be used for any area of JC) During the day the area is fine a lot of people walking around. At night a different story I would be very careful walking around the area. I think there were quite a few muggings in the Garrison/ Pavonia area over the years. Most of the block of Van Wagenen Avenue is subsidized housing. Tough crowd.

Another plus that was not mentioned..if you are Indian or like Indian food?Newark Avenue is just around the corner. For coffee there is a Dunkin Donuts on Broadway and Wagenen. Also PS # 23 school on Garrison if you have kids.

Good Luck!

PS ? hard to believe that Journal Square (like Newark) was once considered the ultimate shopping experience in the tri state area. Journal Square still is?if you want kicks , t-shirts, or lids.

Funny when I was growing up in Jersey City as soon as the street lights came on all of the mom?s on the block would yell for us to come inside. Now being grow up living in Jersey City I more or less follow the same rule. Get off of the mean streets of JC once the street lights come on!!! Mom was right.

Jersey City woman robbed of $10 by two men at gunpoint

Tuesday, September 07, 2010
By KARINA L. ARRUE
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

A 25-year-old Jersey City woman was robbed of $10 at gunpoint yesterday shortly after she got off a Hudson-Bergen Light Rail train at the West Side Avenue station, police said.

The Broadman Parkway victim said she was walking along West Side Avenue near the Miss America Diner at around 12:20 a.m., when two men in a black SUV drove past, reports said.

At one point, the car made a U-turn and headed back toward the victim, reports said.
The driver of the vehicle asked for directions, which the victim gave, but then the passenger pointed a black semi-automatic handgun at the victim and demanded her cash, police said.
The victim told them she had about $10, so the suspects took the money and drove off, reports said.

A commuter van driver gave an alleged carjacker a big dose of pepper spray outside the Newport Centre Mall in Jersey City last night and police quickly arrested the man who was incapacitated and screaming in agony, officials said.

Danny J. Lorenzana, 27, of Sherman Avenue in Jersey City, was arrested at 30 Mall Drive at about 10 p.m. and taken by ambulance to the Jersey City Medical Center to be treated for the lingering effects of the painful spray, reports said.

The 48-year-old resident of 48th Street in Union City said he was parked and waiting to be dispatched when Lorenzana kicked his bus' folding door, smashing the glass and flinging it open, reports said. He said Lorenzana jumped in and began punching him and saying "Give me the money you piece of (blank)" reports said.

The driver was having none of it. He reached for his pepper spray canister and blasted the side of Lorenzana's face, reports said. Lorenzana then jumped into the driver's seat and tried to put the bus in gear but that got him another close-range blast of pepper spray to both eyes.

Lorenzana fell backwards and tumbled off the bus to the ground where he ripped off his shirt and was on all fours when the cops pulled up and cuffed him reports said.

According to the police report, he was "on his hands and knees screaming that he could not see, his eyes were tearing and he appeared in agony."

The jitney driver was also suffering some pain from the pepper spray due to the close quarters in which he fired the spray at Lorenzana and he was treated at the scene by emergency medical technicians from the Medical Center, reports said.

A 77-year-old Jersey City man was arrested after allegedly dragging a 14-year-old boy into a basement and fondling him while masturbating yesterday afternoon on the Western Slope, officials said today.

Kamal Nasr of Liberty Avenue was arrested just after 4 p.m. and charged with criminal sexual contact, endangering the welfare of a child and criminal restraint, reports said.

The boy told police he was walking on Liberty Avenue a few minutes before 4 p.m. when Nasr said, "Come here, your mail came to my house," reports said.

The boy said when he walked over, Nasr grabbed him by his shirt and pulled him into an alley and down a basement staircase saying "It's OK. It's OK. Take off your pants," reports said.

The 14-year-old said Nasr reached into his sweat pants while pulling his hair, reports said, adding that while molesting the boy, Nasr started masturbating.

The victim said he smacked Nasr in the face and ran up the stairs and out of the house, reports said.

The boy quickly called police and told his mother what had happened, reports said.

When the cops arrived Nasr was standing on the street and he was arrested after the victim pointed him out, reports said.

Nasr pleaded guilty to harassment in 2002 after having originally been charged with criminal sexual contact in that incident, Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said this afternoon.

While in a patrol car being taken to the North District Police Station Nasr said he wasn't feeling well and an ambulance was called to take him to the Jersey City Medical Center, reports said.

Jersey City Police spokesman Edgar Martinez said Nasr remains hospitalized.

Man beaten outside Jersey City bar on life support, cops say

A Warren man beaten outside of a Jersey City bar remains on life support.

A Warren man remains on life support after being brutally beaten outside a Downtown Jersey City bar in the early morning hours Saturday in an incident in which two of his friends were also injured, officials said today.

When police responded to Washington and York streets at 1:58 a.m. they found the 22-year-old victim lying on the ground and he was unresponsive and bleeding from the face, nose and right ear, reports said.

The man was rushed to the Jersey City Medical Center in critical condition and Lt. Edgar Martinez said today that he is still hospitalized and on a ventilator.

One of the victim's friends, a 22-year-old Lebenon man, had a swollen face and jaw and he later underwent surgery for five fractures to his facial bones, reports said. A second friend, a 22-year-old Clifton man who was intoxicated, also complained of facial pain, reports said.

A bouncer at Grand Banks Bar & Cafe told police he escorted the Warren man out of the establishment after he became involved in a fight with another group of patrons, reports said. But the bar employee said the man's attackers followed him out to the street and wanted to fight, reports said.

The bouncer said he was trying to disperse the disorderly groups when he saw the Warren man get punched in the face by two men who then kicked him in the face after he was down, reports said. The two attackers ran away and were last scene at Washington and Montgomery streets, reports said.

Both attackers were described as being between 22 to 23-years-old, reports said. One was about 5-feet 10-inches tall, of slim build and wearing a red shirt, blue jeans and a dark colored hat, reports said. The second man being sought was wearing a NY Giants T-shirt, blue jeans and white sneakers, reports said.

Anyone with information on the assault is asked to call the Jersey City police tip line at (201) 547-JAIL.

This whole application process was screwed up since the January try.

As I recall there was a fight between Bret and Christie over the second shot back in May or June. I think Bret said something about the NJEA accepting terms and Christie didn?t like it.

bret criticized

Funny Christie says he doesn?t like the ?Jersey Shore? type shows because they give Jersey a bad name. This screw up is a thousand err.. I mean 400 million times worse!!!

Construction crew in Lincoln Park West in Jersey City finds bones that may be human

Ron Zeitlinger/The Jersey Journal

A construction crew working on a nine-hole golf course in Lincoln Park West in Jersey City discovered what appears to be human bones this morning, Hudson County Sheriff Juan Perez confirmed.

The Hudson County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene and has turned over the investigation to the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office and the state Regional Medical Examiner's Office.

The area the bones were discovered is near the Hackensack River north of the Carson-Nguyen bridge, also known as the Lincoln Highway Bridge. It is also west of the ballfields where St. Peter's College baseball and softball teams play their home games, west of Routes 1&9.

Reminds me of the story about the group of kids playing ice hockey on a frozen pond in the back of Lincoln Park West. One side of their makeshift goal was a stick/pipe with a rag on it. It was already sticking out of the ice. After a few hours of play they looked down in the now clear ice and saw a face looking up at them. The stick with the rag on it was the guys arm!!!!

I was at a baseball game last week in Lincoln Park. I took a walk over the bridge that connects the two sections of the park over Rt 440(1&9). I took a look over at the golf course from the top of the bridge. It looks like Mars!!! No progress! Seems they are doing a lot of work on the waterfront between the 1&9 bridge and Duncan Ave. Maybe after that work is done they will coninue on the golf course.

If you want to see for yourself the Lincoln Park bridge is over by the track. You can drive up onto it for a look see.
