Sure, I am now boycotting KFC, and have been retroactively doing so for the probably decade or more since I've consumed that garbage.

KFC is pretty good as far as fast food goes!

And the Colonel (honorary, btw - Google "Kentucky Colonel") was born in 1890, and managed to have a true by-his-own-bootstraps life without all the retrogressive Republican hyperbole.

Re: New Cafe Ordinance - Call to Action
Home away from home
Home away from home

I'm sorry, Squeeg - both as a homeowner and someone who enjoys outdoor cafes I have to support the new ordinance.

Living in the Heights, we don't have a lot of stylish dining spots - and the only ones with outdoor space I can think of are The Trolley Car and BBQ at Legal Beans (although that may actually be in the Village). The crowds outside on the patio are always pleasant and I've never heard it get so noisy as to be objectionable. These are wonderful amenities, that bring a nice, urbane vibe to the neighborhood - sidewalk and garden cafes, whether ritzy or down home, are super popular in cities all over the world, and I welcome more of it in JC. I'm sure if these businesses want to keep their licenses and the good will of the neighborhood, they will monitor their customers.

And not everyone has a house - you shouldn't assume we all have huge places and private backyards. I live in an apartment - our building has no outdoor space - so these places are where I can take friends and family in nice weather to enjoy a drink and food outside.

Re: Jersey City one of worst cities for drivers in the country, report says
Home away from home
Home away from home

IMO - the issue isn't do we agree JC is not a good city for driving, but rather, why anyone would expect it to be?

The rankings and criteria are not useful in that they compare apples to oranges - western urban sprawl compared to east-coast urban density. JC is part of the DC/Philadelphia/NYC/Boston corridor, and the metrics used (car clubs?!) do not address the core issue, which is facilitating transportation. I did a little experiment, and compared the 6 cities closest to JC in population in just one metric - density. JC is by far the most densely populated of it's cohort, and has the lowest score on the test. Here are how the other cities compare:

Scottsdale, AZ - Rating: 12, 1,180 people/square mile
Greenboro, NC - 4, 2,140/sq. mile
Madison, WI - 17, 3,040/sq. mile
St. Petersburg, FL - 49, 3,960/sq. mile
Chandler, AZ - 25, 4,200/sq. mile
Norfolk, VA - 24, 4,360/sq. mile

To Yvonne's issues of planning - it strikes me that the density issue means car-centric planning may never work. A useful corollary to this study would be one that compares access to intra-city mass transit, which, as a resident of the Heights I can tell you JC sorely lacks.

I signed the petition and gave a small donation. Not only are parks and playgrounds good for children's - and adults! - health and well being; they also give people an opportunity to see and mingle with diverse neighbors of different backgrounds, which helps the social well-being of the city.

I don't disagree, NJ state and local statute should provide for the city doing just that, and billing the owner, as is done in NYC. The law statewide appears to be convoluted http://scholarship.shu.edu/cgi/viewco ... article=1029&context=shlj

IMO, this seems to reflect the bigger problem that the JC government doesn't seem to do anything to solve any problems: sidewalks never cleared of snow and ice, duly reported by me - nothing happens. Traffic laws routinely flouted, I report problem spots - you never see any JCPD presence, and I live near an elementary school. Streets in the Heights awash with trash, same story.

Not to take this off topic, but it does seem important - the level of city services all around is pretty dire; maybe there needs to be a citizens campaign to document all of this, and the results dropped on the mayor's doorstep.

17 years old is still a teenager! Not that he's not responsible for his actions, but at 17 a person doesn't have mature judgement or healthy appreciation for consequences.

Who does postponing the reval really benefit? Developers? It's hard to envision that, since (as I remember from my days looking for my condo) newer projects seemed to be taxed at a much higher level than older conversions. Developers would seem to be positioned to benefit, as after a reval new construction wouldn't need to make up the shortfall from undervalued properties.

People who have owned their properties for a long time? If houses on your block sell for 10x what they did when these resident bought them, then they would staff to see a tax hike. And as a constituency, their opposition is being heard.

Anyhow, I fail to see how the reval issue ties into Abbot school funding - a few high end sales can really skew the numbers, even while the average resident is not much wealthier.

I'm assuming JC's landmarks law - like in NYC, and other cities - require the designated property to be kept in a good state of repair by the owner, and only provides for the city to come in and do the work when there is an unsafe condition that can't be remediated by any other means (sidewalk bridge, sidewalk barriers, etc.).

This has been reported, why is Jersey City so reluctant to enforce the code or statute? This, IMO, is the question we should be asking City Hall.

That aside, you may be right - the nature of Magisterium would seem to preclude favoring or implementing social reform or new, liberal ideas. The more I think about this, the more I'm taking to heart people's suggestions of Grace Van Vorst.

Absolutely its a matter of costs. That is why it is not happening (on site parking).
I love the idea of ?renting? a parking spot , as Brewster does to ensure/ secure a parking spot. Should we then say that we should require that of all homeowners in a residential neighborhood, just as he has? That way we can stop the ?demanding? of the public to provide it, and always have a spot available 24/7. Does privatizing parking (renting) make things better than people who live in a residential neighborhood and use available street parking? At least when I move my car, that public spot becomes available to anyone that needs it- unlike all those spots that are privately rented (taking up precious urban space). Really- I don't know...
I definitely need to find out where his off street paying parking is (really)- because there's nothing I know of in the Village-which really is a part of this equation (which I have specifically noted several times) and should have been considered. When I said we have nowhere to go-we really don?t -including any new residents-that will have cars. Should we build a whole bunch of new public lots to accommodate 50 unit buildings? (No!) But I want what Brewster has! I?m willing to rent- but where? I guess his neighborhood/area has that option already. We don't.
This ambitious project is not great for this piece of irregular land that is flanked on three sides by a small residential neighborhood. Even Torrei has acknowledged the unique challenges of building here. I think we all want what is best for JC in the long run-and what determines "best" has many perspectives. Many question the ?free? parking entitlement- but not the amount of units. Interesting?.
Regardless, great comments from both sides- real food for thought. Yes, it is a privilege to be able to have residential street parking. Absolutely. And no- I am not entitled to that. No one is.
If the city was more mindful and had expectations from the developers to provide at least some parking, we wouldn't be put in the position to now make a parking spot "yours".
As residents and homeowners, we need to be vigilant over new construction that greatly impacts an area. The retail is great- and sorely needed. I think the number of units could have been lessened (when he wanted a variance to not add parking) and we still would have the beginnings of a new vibrant community that honors what is there while also bringing it forward.
in some cases, underground parking might be problematic but i think the real problem is that developers/the government tend to pursue the CHEAPEST option. i am not convinced that underground parking is prohibitively expensive especially since they can do it across the hudson river. people in jersey seem to make excuses to pursue the cheapest option.

This will never happen, but I'd like to see requirements for minimum parking spaces be removed if located near the PATH station. (The developer could still put them in if it's feasible, it just won't be mandated by the city). And Secondly, mandating that any parking must be underground or at least shielded from view from the street should it be included. Let's face it, above ground parking is ugly and reminds me of Newport, the most soulless ugly area of the city.

It's possible to wrap a parking garage with offices that completely hides the garage when viewed from the street and there is at least one development in Jersey City deploying this strategy.

Something like this: http://bloximages.chicago2.vip.townne ... a/52163d59b969b.image.jpg

Although it takes away from a potential roof deck, that is a great idea for keeping car garages from diminishing the pedestrian experience and character of the streetscape.

Do you have a link to the design/details? I'm curious how the cars are moved to the top - do you drive it? Valet service? What are the cost ramifications of creating the reinforced internal structure to accommodate the parking garage?

It's a shame this owner has let this become a hazard - historically, coal chutes had cast-iron vault covers, similar to the cast-iron and bullet glass sidewalk vaults you see in SoHo in NYC (smaller, of course).

It should be filled in, a more sensitive owner could find a replacement to mark the place of an interesting tid-bit of history http://www.urbanremainschicago.com/ne ... ute-covers-now-available/

It really isn't. Now you're unhappy that people disagree with you over the colors of a freakin' cloth. By the way, I'm fairly ambivalent on this topic and see both sides here. But I find it ridiculous that some people feel as though there shouldn't be a debate and that this shouldn't be decided democratically, one side should just be declared "wrong" and that should be the end of it. That side lately has always been the left wing, by the way.

And realistically, it is only a matter of time before the flag goes away.

Well said. Democracy doesn't mean you get your way only. Many liberals seem to have forgotten this.

Thanks, everyone, for the suggestions! This is very helpful and I am looking forward to the journey.

I have no clue what Yvonne is referring to - then again, I was in high school when I lapsed and doubtless forgot much of what I learned. I forwarded her message to my mom, who is a regular church-goer, and am waiting on a response.

Mao - I'm a little surprised by your comments about liturgy re-packaged for today and left wing friendly congregations. Isn't the word of God timeless? Aren't many of Jesus' teachings beyond liberal in today's Darwinian economy?

Thanks again for responses!

To be fair to mRanger48, it is much more than people being less well of than we are. Studies suggest that 30% to 60% of people who are chronically homeless have mental health conditions; and 50% to 80% have experienced lifetime alcohol and/or drug problems. It is very difficult to connect these people to critically needed care and resources.

What you should tell your family, mRanger48, as well as remind yourself, is that yes these people are less "well off" than you are, and are needy, but life has also dealt them a very bad hand in that they are probably not sane or sober and it takes a lot of time and hard work to help them. THEN call the number Heights gave, so someone can get that person out of harms way.

Finally, look for social service groups that do outreach, and donate to them.

Progressive Catholic Church in Jersey City?
Home away from home
Home away from home

I am contemplating finding a church to go to, if not one that's ONA at least one that is reasonably progressive and welcoming to political liberals, gays, people concerned about social/economic justice, etc. Having been raised a Catholic, it is familiar to me (even though I haven't been practicing in decades), and there are doctrinal aspects I like about Catholicism - the importance of faith and deed, as well as the teachings of spiritual leaders, so I'm inclined to stay with it. Like many, I'm particularly impressed by Pope Francis' message.

Any suggestions, or experiences you've had with Catholic Churches in JC or nearby appreciated!

Christie, along with Carly Fiorina and Jeb Bush, are the only Republican candidates who acknowledge their issues with the SCOTUS ruling allowing gay marriage, yet don't support states ignoring it, or pushing for a Constitutional amendment. This puts him in line with the majority of Republican and Evangelical millennial, as well as Americans in general.

On this basis alone - while I would cut off my arm before pulling the lever for a Republican - I wish him well in trying to bring some intelligent discourse to the traveling sh@t/freak-show that is the Republican primary slate, and to stand up to the scared old white evangelicals who are dominating the primary process.

Better scholars than I have explored the lingering effects of slavery, Jim Crow, and racism on modern black America, and his and other conservatives attempts to deflect attention from the root causes of these problems - and the lingering taint of racism evidenced by those who support flying this travesty of "heritage" - shows a total lack of historic perspective, empathy, and basic human kindness.

Design review on the other hand is probably not binding, and it makes sense for the city to use any number of forums to gather input.

In that one, we have a recent arrival to the Heights shot dead in his car on the street - by his estranged girlfriend (who lived in the Bronx). In New York City exists a program to transfer the development rights from a historic building in order to preserve it. Does/Can should a program exist in JC?

The NYC Zoning Resolution allows the "transfer of development rights (TDR) allows for the transfer of unused development rights from one zoning lot to another... usually to promote the preservation of historic build?ings'... In the case of a landmark building... a transfer may be made by CPC special permit from the zoning lot containing the designated landmark to an adjacent zoning lot or one that is directly across a street or, for a corner lot, another corner lot on the same intersection."

The TDR is also approved by the Landmarks Commission, which not only requires the historic building in question to be restored to a first class condition, but also that the new building have a harmonious relationship to the landmark historic building. In NYC, this has been an excellent tool for restoring neglected historic buildings. Generally, though, the receiving site ends up with a building considerably larger than the landmark and the older buildings around it.

Would it be good for JC? Yes, in that historic buildings like the ones illustrated in an earlier post could be saved. But a larger issue for people on this board seems to be scale, so it may not be useful if people continue to object to larger structures being built in a low-scale environment.
