What exactly is an entertainment establishment? How will they entertain me? Will there be puppet shows? ventriloquists? burlesque? clowns and magicians? singing and dancing? sideshow? Will LSP be like the new Branson, MO.? Will every entertainer from JC have their own theater? Will there be a Flip Wilson Show Palace? Queen Latifa? Beetlejuice Theater? Martha Stewart (did you know she was born here? Probably in the Beacon). The Duprees Doowop Hall of Fame?

Also, if your pick ups happen before the crack of dawn, how do you give them anything? Tape it into the top of the trash bin and hopes nobody steals it overnight? I am at a total loss. Thoughts?

I don't think I'm reading this right. Did you say "tip the garbage men"? Are you telling me you actually knew your garbage men? And you gave them Christmass gifts? That's amazing. DC must be like living in Mr. Rogers neighborhood. I couldn't pick my garbage men out of a lineup if my life depended on it. Anyway, the only time money changes hands between me and the garbage man is when I want them to take something they're not supposed to. It's a bribe actually but tip does sounds so much nicer. Yes, let's call it a tip.

A shave? A SHAVE? You get a SHAVE at the barber's? Do you have to go through some kind of time warp portal to get the your barber? So you sit there with that hot towel over your face, oblivious to the the possibility of some goon walking in the door holding a .38? Ever hear the story about Albert Anastasia? So then where do you go after the shave? Down the street to the shoeshine stand for a shine, stopping on the way to buy a carnation for your lapel? Then what do you do? Stand on the corner leaning against a lampost flipping a coin and reading the racing forms for the rest of the afternoon? Is this your typical day Mr. Diamond Jim McGrieves?

Re: White Manna

I visited the Manna a few weeks ago. I haven't been there in many years, decades actually. Although I have a nostalgic fondness for the building, let us not mince words. The food sucks big time, and I am no food snob. I guess I had forgotten why I haven't been there in so long. The burgers were tastless back then and they still are. The fries back then were't bad, the thick crinkly ones. Now they have gone to shoestring fries. Unfortunately, I did not have the pleasure of meeting the nasty griddleman. I would take White Castle over Manna any day. Sorry to be sacrilegious here but the truth must be told. I did go to the Hackensack joint a long time ago. I don't remember how they were but in the photo I posted a few posts above they look pretty gooey and unhealthy, ie: tasty.

Driver at fault. He states he saw the kids crossing the street before all this happened. When you see people in the road, especially kids who's actions are often unpredictable, you slow down so you can stop at a safe distance if necessary. If the kid fell backwards and got hit, it means the driver was planning to pass them within 4-6' at a rate of speed such that he could not stop in time should the unexpected happen. Jaywalking doesn't matter. You don't play chicken with pedestrians even though they may play chicken with cars.

Hey man, break out that water pipe.

29 Grateful Dead tracks live at Roosevelt Stadium 1972

So how many of those tiny little plastic baggies they sell these days would it take to fill up a 1972 water pipe?

Newark Ave. is one of the few major east/west arteries running through the city into downtown. It makes no sense at all to consider a pedestrian mall there.

Mr. Sternbergh, as you can see from the few responses so far, Downtown Jersey City is inhabited by a population of exiled smartasses who have all been kicked out of Manhatten, Brooklyn, Hoboken etc. I don't live downtown so I am not one of THEM. Your first mistake was to mention that you are writing an article and especially for a NY publication. You really should have lied and said that you are considering moving here and asking for advice. The regular posters would be climbing over each other to offer sincere and useful information on every facet of everyday life in the area. Happens at least once a week here. Too late now, your cover is blown. You will get nothing but smartass sarcasm now. Best bet is to go back through the forum archives. You will find enough material to write a series of books. Note: pay special attention to threads that discuss "pimp", "Wanda", "boobies", "wheelchair clown". These will be the most informative.

Preservation is the key word here. Have you noticed that these people never seem to age either? I don't mean to scare you but I have seen historic photos of JC from 1885. Some of the people in these photos bear an uncanny resemblance to the present day board members. Of course the clothes are different but otherwise they look exactly as they do now.

Well it's fine that the Councilman signed up for this thing but, as I see it, he has no option now but to win this race. I mean, he is STEVE FULOP. How would it look if he were to lose? Now next year I think he should work on being the first councilman in space to work on urban planning experiments in a zero gravity environment. After that he can relax and maybe pick up a Nobel Prize every few years.

Sandman, it seems to me the man was going out of his way to be nice to you. He waited til your third fauxpas before the fongul. To bad you didn't get a photo of the burger as it hit the door behind you and slowly slid down the glass.
Anyway, this LINK starts off with a Calahan's/hot dog article and if you scroll down about 2/3 you will find the top burger list. The White Manna in Hackensack is in the top ten in the US. Great burger and other food photos on here.

Re: White Manna

I haven't been in there in ages but can't imagine the place or the menu has changed very much. As I recall, the ordering procedure is, you tell the guy what you want and sit down and wait for it. Not a lot of room for discussion. How did you get into an argument with him? Were you indecisive about what you wanted as he stood staring at you waiting for your order? You didn't start asking downtown type questions did you? I hope you didn't ask about a vegetarian menu or substitutions or fat/trans fat content or any other nutritional questions. You didn't tell him "no onions" did you? Did you ask for something that was not on the overhead menu? Did you ask about some sort of exotic or healthy juice drink? Did your face register disgust and or disappointment when you first walked in, and if so, did you pull a scented handkerchief from your sleeve and hold it to your face? Perhaps he sensed that you were a yuppie. What kind of car were you driving? Does it have bumper stickers? If so, what type? Were you with someone else? If so, what was the topic of of your discussion as you waited and could others overhear it? Was someone waiting in the car 15' away, and if so did you call them on the cell to ask them what they wanted? Did you make any derogotory comments about prostitutes or prostitution?

It's not the first truck to flip on this section of 440. Two very sharp turns in the road. You could easily flip a car or SUV let alone a fully loaded top heavy truck.

Sinatra used to hang out at an Italian restaurant on Mallory Ave. on the west side. My mom went to school with him in Hoboken. Below is a photo of some of his other VIP friends from the NY area. Top left is Big Paul Castellano and standing third from right is Carlo Gambino. Second from right is Jimmy "The Weasel" Frattiano. The other guys are all Gambino wiseguys. Photo was taken at the Westchester Premier Theater which was owned by and "busted out" (run into bankruptcy) by the mob.

If this wasn't an inside job, these were very sophisticated burglers. Like you see in the movies. Alarm code, 2 locked doors no forced entry and 2 safes opened. If it WAS an inside job, the list of people privy to all those codes combinations and keys has got to be very small. That means they can't spend the money on anything big for a long time.

The Secret Service was established as a law enforcement agency in 1865. While most people associate the Secret Service with Presidential protection, our original mandate was to investigate the counterfeiting of U.S. currency--which we still do. Today our primary investigative mission is to safeguard the payment and financial systems of the United States. This has been historically accomplished through the enforcement of the counterfeiting statutes to preserve the integrity of United States currency, coin and financial obligations. Since 1984, our investigative responsibilities have expanded to include crimes that involve financial institution fraud, computer and telecommunications fraud, false identification documents, access device fraud, advance fee fraud, electronic funds transfers, and money laundering as it relates to our core violations.

i know some people who bought newly built stuff around the corner and are paying like 15,000 a year- that seems insane.

What is your property assesed at? When did you take posession of the property or has it been in the same name for many years? How big is the lot? I don't get this. My next door neighbor has a single family for maybe 25 years and he pays around 5K. I have a 2 family with a non standard small lot and pay about 6.5K. I have a long time elderly tennant on sec 8 and would never consider raising her rent which is quite low. I don't know what this place is worth right now and don't really care since I have no intention of selling but if there is a reassesment and my taxes skyrocket, I am on the street.

Probably true, but it should be noted that shit happens and some people lose everything or the means to pay rent due to unfortunate circumstances. When I was dropping stuff off once, I met a guy that lost his job as a super and lost his free apartment. It turned out he was a great handyman and I had him do some work for me. He was extremely talented and skilful, just down on his luck.

Oh sure, without a doubt. There are lots of people living just on the edge. A lot more of the shit you speak of will happen as the cost of housing/living around here continues to rise and wages continue to stagnate.

I have always dropped off my unwanted (unwanted because I have expanded another notch) clothing to St. Lucys. They have a real need for good used clothing. The more I eat, the better they dress. "End homelessness"? not until someone invents an instant cure for substance addictions. I'm not being critical but that's what 75% of homelessness is all about.
