Re: It's time the Big Media Outlets did some heavy duty investigative reporting on JC

Vigilante is right.

I was at the council meeting last Tuesday morning and to witness all the council members, aside from Fulop, vote to keep Vega seated was, though not all that surprising, disappointing.

You know as well as I do that most if not all of the seated members know that Vega's name is now forever tarnished and most likely guilty of some very bad deeds. However, they also know if they talk or voted with Fulop it could come back to haunt them. Let's face it Vega knows a lot and he won't forget who sided with him through these tough, embarrassing times.

We have to keep the pressure on. August 4th should be a big turnout with more media present.

Believe me, Corzine hears the rumblings loud and clear and from a political perspective needs to oust these low-lives to have a chance at keeping his butt in the seat.

Just look what is happening in Ridgewood, NJ right now. Corzine is trying to distance himself from the dirty politicos all over NJ and Vegas on up to Healy are no exception. Sure, Healy may be a Corzine friend but when a Governership is at stake that will sink as fast as Healy downinig yet another pint of Irish ale.

Something tells me the Healy team is "happy as hell" Shaw is out of the picture.

From the FBI:
"After defendant Beldini and JC Official 4 left, while outside the luncheonette, defendant Shaw told the CW that “everybody” (to include defendant Beldini and JC Official 4) was as
“happy as hell.” Thereafter, defendant Shaw accepted $10,000 in cash from the CW to structure as political contributions to JC Official 4 as facilitated by defendant Beldini.”

Especially damning for Healy is item 23:
? 23. On or about April 30, 2009, defendant Beldini met defendant Shaw, defendant Cheatam, JC Official 4 and the CW at a luncheonette in Jersey City. Before defendant Beldini or JC Official 4 arrived, defendant Shaw was informed by the CW that the CW had brought $10,000 in cash that the CW would give to defendant Shaw after the meeting to arrange a contribution to JC Official 4. After defendant Beldini arrived, Beldini was informed by the CW that the CW would be applying for a zone change in approximately two months and to not let such application go to the ?bottom? of the pile, to which defendant Beldini responded that she could say ?one thing? about JC Official 4--JC Official 4 ?remembered? JC Official 4's ?friends,? and JC Official 4's word was ?gold.? Defendant Beldini further was advised that the CW would give defendant Shaw another $10,000 after the meeting and then, in turn, defendant Shaw would do ?business? with defendant Beldini. Defendant Beldini further was advised by the CW that the CW would give another $10,000 after the election. After JC Official 4 arrived, among other things, defendant Cheatam advised JC Official 4 that they would get development matters relating to the CW moving after the election. Shortly thereafter, defendant Cheatam advised JC Official 4 that the CW wanted to be on the ?top? of the ?pile.? JC Official 4 was further told by the CW that the CW: (a) had given $10,000 to defendant Shaw already (a reference to the March 20th payment of money to defendant Shaw); (b) would give another $10,000 to defendant Shaw that day to be passed on to JC Official 4's election fund; and (c) would give another $10,000 after the election, to which, JC Official 4 responded, among other things, that hopefully ?we? could work ?together? and that this would be ?mutually beneficial.? After defendant Beldini and JC Official 4 left, while outside the luncheonette, defendant Shaw told the CW that ?everybody? (to include defendant Beldini and JC Official 4) was as ?happy as hell.? Thereafter, defendant Shaw accepted $10,000 in cash from the CW to structure as political contributions to JC Official 4 as facilitated by defendant Beldini.?

Do any of us really think this is an isolated incident?

For Healy to slide by, after reading the transcripts above, would be an outrage and a slap in each of our tax-paying faces.

Latest info on Healy's right hand (wo)man, Leona Beldini:

Leona Beldini, the deputy mayor of Jersey City, who was accused of taking a $20,000 bribe, retained Brian Neary of Hackensack, N.J. His reputation in the 1980s as one of the state's leading drunken-driving defense lawyers has been superseded by his work on a mountain of sensational cases ranging from the defense of murder suspects, rap stars and public officials, and of coaches and teachers accused of having sex with underage students.

Again, do any of us really think this is an isolated incident?

I bet you dollars to donuts she will cut a deal. Let's get to the nuts and bolts of it and then let them have their day in court.

Let the shake down begin! We are done putting up with our corrupt JC government and being the laughing stock of the nation.

In light of Phillip floods rude acts today in front of media and scores of JC citizens here is the full story on Phillip Flood again.....Momma sure must be proud!

Less than three months after one arm of county government pressured Jersey City resident Phillip Flood II to resign due to a marijuana bust, his mother, Hudson County Register and Jersey City Councilwoman Willie Flood, hired him as a $38,000-a-year data processing systems programmer, officials said yesterday.

It was the first of two government jobs Flood II has landed thanks to his mother. On Nov. 20, Willie Flood hired him as her aide, earning Flood II another $15,000 a year.

The marijuana arrest occurred on Feb. 15, officials said.

Initial charges included six counts, including possession of a controlled dangerous substance and being under the influence of drugs, but was downgraded to disorderly person offenses and remanded to the Jersey City Municipal Court, where on July 19 Flood II pleaded guilty to one court of possession of marijuana, said Trial Court Administrator Joseph Davis.

Flood II was placed on one year probation and given $708 in fines and penalties, which he paid by Sept. 25, Davis said.

The arrest triggered Flood II's suspension at the Hudson County Schools of Technology, where he had been working since July 2001 as a data entry and Web site employee, county officials said. Flood II finally resigned the $35,000-a-year post in August, said county spokesman Jim Kennelly.

The final call to put Flood II back on the county payroll on Nov. 13 was made by his mother, Willie Flood, Kennelly said yesterday.

"As a constitutional officer, she (Flood) is the appointing officer," Kennelly said. "She is the ultimate authority over who is hired or fired in her office."

The marijuana bust wasn't Flood II's first brush with the law.

In the face of a theft by deception charge by the state Attorney General's Office last year, Flood II agreed to repay the state nearly $13,000 in unemployment insurance the state said he fraudulently collected between Aug. 4, 2001 and Aug. 23, 2003.

Flood never entered a plea and entered pre-trial intervention so no crime was entered on his record, said Attorney General spokesman Peter Aseltine.

Flood II didn't return calls to comment. Willie Flood called her son "a very industrious and bright man."

He "grew up in the church" and helped distribute turkeys this past Thanksgiving, she added.

Of course Flood II is industrious, he went into business for himself selling marijuana out of his mom's car. That plus his generous spirit distributing turkeys and what not clearly make him qualified to be employed at taxpayers expense.

The whole stretch from Erie down to Grove is a mystery to me. If they fully intended to have a nice tree lined street wouldn't they have left cutouts for these trees? Why take the time to pour more "fake blue stone" concrete if you were just going to have to jack-hammer sections later? Makes no sense at all. So, we are left with one lonely tree in front of Skinners Loft with some cheap, flimsy metal surround.

No seating, no bike lock-up areas, nothing original, no style - Just a quick, slap-up job that we are so accustomed too.

A group of highschoolers would have done a better more thoughtful job.

I am sure Team Levin and the Fulop people can get behind this. I have heard a lot of talk over the last several days about citizens going down there.

My friends are sick of it and we see it daily with all the bad "improvement" decisions that are so badly tainted that it needs to be brought to light and people need to be held accountable.

I can feel it. 2009 could be a remarkable time for REAL change in Jersey City.

For over a century (yes, over a century) our "upstanding" JC government has put their middle fingers in the air, snickered a bit and took yet another envelope filled with green greed.

This huge FBI probe/gift was handed to the citizens of our city and surrounding cities. Do you not feel some sort of duty to show your utter distaste for these phonies? I sure as hell do.

Complacency and time are not in our favor. So lets stand strong and be counted.

Let's be civil, let's be just, let's send them out on the jail house bus!

Re: ????Info on obtaining R1 driveway variance???

Regulator,

I got to thinking about your quote, "at some point you sacrifice aesthetics for function." This, in my opinion, is the sort of shortsightedness that plagues our city councils psyche. Imagine if this quote of yours was mandated by city councils throughout the land? My question to you is why can't we have both? Seriously, is it that hard to have both? Last I checked most architects and quality home builders (with a soul) appreciate good design and have an eye towards aesthetics. Sadly our city council awards most of these contracts to the cheapest bidders who just want to finish and move onto the next botched job. If you want examples simply head on over to the new and ?improved? Newark Ave. sidewalks or the steps and brickwork around Grove Pointe. Abysmal!

Years ago I lived in a 1950's apartment that had a little phone nook with a phone book slot underneath and luckily had some very useful built-in dining room cabinets and shelves. Now that is a prime example of aesthetics and function. Sadly, the 60's rolled around and quality wood working and attention to detail were quickly traded for cheaply built pre-fab style buildings. Talk about sacrificing aesthetics for function. That is what the 60?s brought to our cities. Sure, not all 60?s design was that way but the vast majority of apartment houses in urban areas were. Don?t get me wrong, I applaud many of the new technology advancements in the building and design industry that speeds up the process. I just can?t accept your statement and wish I lived back when good design and quality craftsmanship actually meant something. How many of these JC builders actually take pride in their work? I think you know the answer.

Quote:

regulator wrote:
again, i don't buy the street parking argument. if your lot is wide enough , you can potentially park up to 3 cars (2 inside, one outside) in a spot where previously only 1 car fit!

as far as aesthetics, that argument is a wash to me. would i rather live in a city where flowers bloomed on every street? sure. but the reality is this is a city, and at some point you sacrifice aesthetics for function.

as a side note, i also never understood people's gripes with the aesthetics of the newer buildings and how they are an 'eyesore' for the community. since when has aesthetics become something that you could objectively measure anyway? who's to say that i or someone down the street don't appreciate the way the new buildings downtown look? just because you think something is an eyesore doesn't make it so.

of course it all boils down to the fact that it's against the law to do it in jc without a permit, and there's really no arguing that fact.

I have to agree with Ihatethiscity on this one. I believe this very topic went to a council vote last year and luckily it was upheld. Making your own driveway is illegal. The contractor doing the driveway should also be held accountable and fined or have their builders permits yanked.

There are large chunks of streets in this chopped up city that have zero place to park on the streets because home owners have took it into their own hands to remove there nice front yard and replace them with slabs of concrete.

I am sure when this happened in the past a few bucks were exchanged and that was that but now the city has finally got their heads out of the asses and are upholding the laws. I have a neighbor that has concrete in the front of his house and back. No greenery just oil spills.Quote:

Just look around and tell me he gives a rats ass about the safety of our cyclists on our city streets. One example: Columbus was and is perfectly wide enough for bike lanes but the city councils and Healy's shortsightedness, lack of understanding and desire for us to be on public transportation has stymied any efforts to have better, safer roadways for cyclists in JC.

Sweet Jesus jc73! Are you serious? I would hate to imagine the cheaply built crap that would replace these historic, well-made structures on Newark Ave. Look at these old buildings sometime. This is the craftsmanship of our grand fathers and great-grand fathers. These were created in a time when details like hand laid hex-tile entrance ways had designs in them, when grand entrance doors took a couple week to make and weighed over 100 pounds, when interior walls were thick and window frames were hand routed. Unless they spend a fortune (which I don't see any potential JC businesses doing anytime soon) then you will get nothing original, nothing remotely able to stand the test of time (both in structure and design) nothing with an ounce of planning involved and certainly nothing with any heart and soul.

jc73 wrote:
Unless you tear down the old buildings on Newark Ave your not going to bring in new business, the only thing that will end up there are some small high end shops. If you want to bring in bigger business and more jobs your going to have to knock down the old buildings and put up new bigger buildings. So putting in a new sidewalk to do that would be pointless. As far as property values go if you compare the homes in downtwon to the homes on the other end of the city technically the homes on the other end of the city are much nicer and much much bigger, therefore you would get more for your money and bring up property values.[/quote]

Re: SHODDY WORK IN DT JERSEY CITY

It goes without saying that the sidewalks and public areas in other parts of JC are worse, much worse. Those council members I guess don't pull enough weight to get their wards fixed up and revitalized. I suppose the areas immediately around City Hall and the main Path hubs get dibs. I don't know many areas of JC as I work near the Grove PATH. So, that is why I mentioned that particular section.

I am just dumbfounded that JC doesn't have a group of credible contractors who actually have design and workmanship in mind when they take on a job. I watched them build Grove Pointe and once the trucks and workers left I kept wondering when the stairs would be finished. I guess that is what 'they' call finished.

We are not dealing with the the guys from This Old House. I realize that. City projects get bids and usually the cheapest bid gets the job. Of course with JC involved who know really who is greasing who. So, the cheapest guy gets chosen then he sub-contracts it out to someone even cheaper and less qualified who end up quickly butchering a job. The town is butchered left and right. One only has to to drive around for a short time to see lovely brown stones pock-marked with hideous pink brick s*hit boxes. Look at all the side walks that have been turned into driveways on some of these streets. Just unimaginable. Again, JC asleep at the wheel.

Why do we get the second rate contractors to do all these city scape improvements in Jersey City? I know the almighty buck dictates a lot but Sweet Jesus they quality is abismal. Using NYC as a barometer does not help but come on!

Case in point:

New Grove Street PATH sidewalk: Cracks everywhere not to mention weeds all over the Marin Blvd. Columbus intersection. Check out the weeds next to the pine tress that out line the parking lot. They are nearly 4 feet tall in places.

Grove Pointe Condos: The stairs and brick work surrounding this already outdated monstrosity is so poorly executed that is doesn't even look finished. Either money dried up or they walked off the job.

Newark Ave. sidewalk improvements: Are they serious? The powers that be in NYC would have said WTF and got someone who knows what they are doing.

Fulop?

ROCKAWAY TWP. ? Morris Hills High School student Anamaria Angel was one of 28 aspiring singers who belted it out in the Rockaway Townsquare Mall Tuesday in the hopes of winning the opportunity to record an original song written by multiplatinum, Grammy-nominated songwriter and producer Rob Fusari.

Angel, a 16-year-old Rockaway resident, sang the Celine Dion hit "When I Need You" and was then chosen as one of 10 semifinalists, each of whom was asked to sing Elton John's "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me."

"I'm very shy off stage, but when I'm on stage, I feel like a totally different person," she said. "I like reaching out to people."

The Rockaway Township audition was the first of five for the "Sing to Win" competition, which is being sponsored by 95.5 WPLJ-FM and Simon Property3 Group malls. Angel and two other Morris County hopefuls ? David Marin of the Kenvil section of Roxbury, and David Badano of Parsippany ? were chosen to go on to the July 14 finale at the Rockaway Townsquare, where they will compete against the top three finalists from four other Simon malls.

The purpose of the "Sing to Win" competition is to give people in the community a shot at fame and fortune, according to Joe "Monkey Boy" Pardavila, executive producer of the Morning Show on 95.5 WPLJ and the host for the auditions.
However, don't expect the kind of critiques made on "American Idol." Pardavila said there will be no Simon Cowell on the judging panel.

The judges for Tuesday's audition included Deb Warren, a songwriter and Simon employee; Josh Sarubin, who has worked in A&R at Columbia Records, Arista Records and Island Def Jam Recordings; and Rob Fusari, a songwriter and producer who has worked with artists like Lady Gaga, Destiny's Child and the Jonas Brothers.

The remaining "Sing to Win" auditions will be held June 9 at the Livingston Mall, June 16 at Newport Centre in Jersey City, June 23 at the Menlo Park Mall in Edison and June 30 at the Ocean County Mall in Toms River. Singers between the ages
of 16 and 26 are eligible, but those under age 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. The finale will be held 5:30 p.m. July 14 at the Rockaway Townsquare Mall.

From young folks and commuters on ten-speeds and cyclo-cross; to high schoolers and flatlanders on BMX; to chicks and dudes on cruisers; to moms and pops with seats for the wee one; and of course there's food delivery guys and laborers; and then there are the fixed-gears cyclists.

There are a lot of bikes in this town. Currently, we get little support, lots of scorn, and a disproportionate amount of risk! (Selfish drivers don't help).

Something has to change. We can't simple "change" the culture of driving, but this is a great opportunity the share the road!
