east of the embankment is newport.... which is still a part of downtown.

the area in question is one in limbo between mcginley square and downtown. id say it's closer to downtown though.

chilltown is a nickname for jersey city (much like brick city is a nickname for newark)

Corey Booker like Bloomberg has come out for Healy!

Booker said he was living in the housing projects -- it is in the documentary "Street Fight" -- but I am not sure how "real" those kind of stunts really are.

It's not like he lived there with no protection for years... I really doubt he was coming and going to his home in the Projects at all hours of the day and night - ALONE.

Maybe he did - but I know I wouldn't do it!

(The film does assert he did it all alone so who knows - I am sure Sharpe James' police sure weren't watching out for him! )

A Chicago mayor did the same media stunt and there were always an army of cops camped out in front.

im pretty sure booker living in the projects was more than a stunt.. i think he lived there for awhile even after winning the election

just trying to point out that you shouldnt expect much to happen if you call the police about it; it's not cynicism, it's reality. if you want to do something about it, then call arnold diaz or any of the other news outlets as you noted. or write to healy's office directly.

Cops hunting Pershing Field stabber nab gun suspect instead

Monday, April 20, 2009

An investigation into a brutal stabbing Friday night at Pershing Field in Jersey City led to the unrelated arrest of a man carrying an illegal handgun, police said.

Ismael Ricketts, 23, of Orange, was charged with possession of weapons for unlawful purposes and receiving stolen property, reports said.

Police found a 15-year-old at Pershing Field at Central Avenue bleeding from a stab wound at 10:50 p.m.

The victim said a large group of teens punched him in the face and swung a bottle hitting him on the head, and he then felt a sharp object slicing him behind the ear. The youth was treated and released at the Jersey City Medical Center.

Searching for the attackers, police spotted Ricketts, who they said was acting suspiciously, and found the gun in his car, reports said.

path to hoboken ($1.75) + cab anywhere in hoboken city limits ($5) = $6.75.. do that next time instead of cab from jc to hob. as was said earlier already, cabs can charge whatever they want once it's outside the city limits. as with anything that has its price dictated by the market (in this case the cab-ride market, so to speak), it's not a ripoff if people are paying for it

they have carnivals in the park at least twice a year.. once in the spring and once later in the summer. a few decent rides, food, etc... nothing too fancy but a fun diversion. do yourself a favor and go early in the evening or afternoon, as it can get a bit rowdy later on at night. i remember i took my girlfriend on one of our first dates there and a huge fight of 20-30 kids broke out.. not very romantic, lol.

So can JC obtain that concentrated, well organized main drag? Can Grove or Newark Ave become that way?

i think the intention was to turn the newport waterfront area into this sort of deal. i dont know if it's quite 'there' yet, but it's alot closer to the above description than newark ave is/will be.

Re: Dan Levin for Mayor

i met him at PS 6 downtown a couple of months back at a civic JC talk/meeting. the guy seemed to have his head on right and spoke intelligently enough about several key issues that he's worked on in the past. unfortunately, to beat the incumbent healy (whos backed by the HCDO) would require someone more of a game-changer than levin is. an obama-like character (not like obama's policies, but rather the type of person who inspires enough people to come out and vote), someone like booker in newark.

my guess is he finishes 4th this time around, but at least he'll get his name out there. if healy ever resigns, or if he decides not to run again next time out, i can see him doing much better (kinda like booker - took him 2 tries but eventually got the job done)

Well "regulator", I thought you would have been able to get my point, but I will spell it out in simpler language for you to understand in this hypothetical, which I hope is not a "legitimate scenario". I place them with all drains on society in the unfortunate event that some amnesty is granted. Legal does not mean that they contribute to society in any meaningful way. I place them with the unwed mothers of 6 who do nothing more than raise criminals. I place them with the welfare cheats. I suspect I
place them with you, regulator.

so you went from disliking them because they were "illegal" to disliking them because they are drains on society?

Quote:

And this "hate" that you speak of

i believe you answered your own question throughout this thread

Quote:

(and why is it that anyone who disagrees with a liberal agenda is deemed a hater?) is for a society that wants to police itself only when it is politically correct to do so. That taxes the working who try to do things legally, just to pay for the lazy. I went to highschool, , college, grad school; avoided trouble; so that I could succeed. And I would say a good portion of my "rewards" goes for those who had a much better time and ignored society's rules. No one has personal responsibility under a welfare state.

no one brought up any form of politics (at least i didnt), so i dont see why this has to be a political agenda issue. for the record, i went to grammar school, high school, college and grad school all in the jc-hoboken area. but that's irrelevant to the matter we were discussing.

you jumped from 'illegals are bad because they dont pay taxes' to assuming that all illegals would be on welfare if they were, in fact, legal. but you then contradict yourself with

Quote:

In any event, I think for the most part "illegals" are good moral, hardworking people, but what part of illegal do you not understand. I just think the world would be better off if they did their hardworking back at home, rather than sending $$$ back there and contributing nothing here.

where you finally get to your point - namely, people should not come and bother us 'mericans and should just stay home.

if this thread were to head into a political-type thread, i'd venture to guess that you considered yourself some sort of limbaugh-listening conservative. but we'll leave the politics out, lest you diverge the topic into why liberals are bad.

Quote:

And K-Lo--offering drivers licenses will not, for the most part, mean that those you don't want on the road will be licensed and have insurance. It's just a first step towards regulator's legalization.

legalization is not unprecedented and is not as hypothetical or farfetched as you try to make it seem in your post. i was only a baby when it happened, so i can't speak about it firsthand though. someone throw me a bone here with this

what''s gonna be the argument when the government extends amnesty and residency to illegals, thereby requiring them to pay taxes like everyone else? technically, they'll be paying taxes and no longer "free loading".

will the hate stop then? or will it just deflect to another aspect of the ex-illegal / now legal immigrant?

It was fine when everyone wore a shirt with their name sewn on it and carried a lunchbox to work and knocked back a few Rheingolds at the end of the day. But the invasion of the suits and their preference for European lagers serves as visible evidence that blue-collar Charlie hasn't quite made it up the ladder as far as he would have liked. Charlie scrapes his knuckles and suffers backaches for his craft. Biff maybe will get carpal tunnel. Charlie builds things. Biff shuffles money around. It isn't fair!

Of course, the above scenario is really more of a caricature or sitcom. I think the typical new JC resident is similar to me. Not really young, but an urban professional (as opposed to amateur, I guess.) Raised in a union/middle class household, barely graduated college (financially and academically), found a job in finance that pays pretty well and scraped up enough to get a decent condo. Maybe they "settled" on JC or maybe they just really wanted to stay in NJ near friends and family. But we pretty much just want to live and let live. You can see us in the bars sometimes. We usually sit between the handful of obnoxious yuppies/fratboys/jocks/bigswingingjohnsons drinking Amstels and another handful of seething-with-jealousy, born-and-bred, JC-"educated", wannabe-anarchists knocking back something brewed within 20 miles.

I would suggest that the yuppies/fratboys/jocks/bigswingingjohnsons stop making it so easy to hate them, but I don't think that they can really help themselves. Anyway, they really are precious few of these creatures in Jersey City. Perhaps the ragers could do themselves a favor and stop even thinking about these folks. Just ignore them. And stop hating on all that is new. Its a big city. There are still plenty of other places you can go for whatever. Your health will benefit. I mean, some of you are already hating on a still-unopened deli.

A friggin' deli.

i think i'm gonna quote this on every thread similar to this one from now on

victoria,

1st - your original posts on this thread were just as over-generalizing and stereotyping as anyone else's on this thread (hoboken = frat boy type, bla bla). fine

2nd - you seem to be mistaking two posters with similar names. "heights" is the poster who is sometimes douchey and oftentimes anti-poor people. hes the one who mentioned stuff about 'primitive', but i dont think he was calling anyone 'primitive'. newheights is a different poster.

3rd - not sure why you went off on this tangent

I think the hate being portrayed on this board is more about the haves vs the have nots. worry about yourselves. Stop whining. I have liberal and conservative friends living in Hoboken. Some are musicians, artists and others are in corporate.its not all one type.

Do me a favor grab a beer on a sunny friday outside texas arizona and tell me how the women look that get off the path train. maybe thats just it ! Cant score the hot chicks? or maybe your one of those angry chicks that doesnt shave her arm pits?

Okay, my sincere apology to the person who started this thread because I'm going totally off-topic but this is my last post, promise. NewHeights, I think your parents should have smacked you just a little bit more when you were a whining, screaming, ugly baby annoying patrons at restaurants. I would have been the well-behaved girl next to you laughing at your obvious shortcomings. But really, is this what you do with your spare time, lecherously check-out women who get off the Hoboken PATH from a PIZZA place? Oh man. It's too easy. Your comeback was lame and worse your grammar sucks!! Besides that, you just convinced me that on top of all your shortcomings (boring, ignorant, lecherous) you are also sexist. When I see some fat ugly guy sitting at Texas Arizona, lecherously checking out the babes that get off the PATH, I'll be sure to call the cops-lamo. (BTW: I know some beautiful lesbians and hairy ones too that would happily kick your ass, just let me know and I'll arrange it).
Now, this thread was about taxes in Hoboken. You should all get back to it and sorry for going off thread. As for platitudes about getting along, I'm all for it, but you know what I've noticed lately, racism is like okay on the JC List. It seems it's not okay to say "frat boy" but it is okay to use words like "primitive" to refer to people that live on MLK and Montgomery. What's up with that? Heights, I think most people know you are ignorant and the selection of your primary source couldn't be more indicative of this. Please stop making stupid comments about things you haven't the slightest clue about. I mean really, I chuckled the other day: "Spaniards are Caucasians". You are a moron. Try and check out a history book every once in a while instead of Metro and check out what happened in Spain, um, let's see from 800-1492. You are a moron and so is anyone else that condones such blatant racism on this site. Peace

The vibe in Jersey City, even downtown, is very different from Hoboken. Come hang out some Saturday. There are a number of cafes (Starbuck's, if you're into that; Beechwood on Grove; Made with Love, which is actually an organic bakery and very cool, on Jersey Avenue).

Walk around the parks (Hamilton Park, Van Vorst) and along the length of Newark Ave. and Grove Street/Manila (same street, different name, depending on which section you're on).

There are lots of different "scenes", depending on your activities and politics. It's pretty easy to meet people here.

I live uptown now, in McGinley Square, a few blocks south of Journal Square. That's another thing, Jersey City is MUCH BIGGER than Hoboken and has a million little neighborhoods with their own vibe, food, shops, etc.

It's kind of excellent.

lol @ mcginley square = uptown... you realize we share a border with union city to the north, right?

http://www.destinationjerseycity.com/maps.php

anyway, my quick rundown on a couple of the hoods:

downtown area: nicest and most expensive. convenient to both morristown (close to i78) as well as the path trains. has alot of smaller neighborhoods within the 'downtown' umbrella.. expect to pay more the closer you get to the waterfront (on any of the sides).

heights: (where i live now) the areas nearest to JFK blvd are the best IMO.. very easy commute to NYC via bus, very close to JSQ (depending on what area youre looking into), relatively safe (again depending on the individual area), and also convenient to all the major highways nearby (turnpike, route 3, route 1-9, etc). also rents are considerably cheaper than downtown. alot of older houses, but also alot of new complete renovations at good deals. youre even close to a light rail station depending on what area of the heights youre in. id start looking here as well as downtown if i were you.

journal square: there are a couple of new and interesting buildings, as well as some older ones at good rates. alot more hustle and bustle especially near bergen and JFK.

west side - alot of nice properties near lincoln park, and very very cheap. however they're cheap because the surrounding areas have not yet fully reached their potential. streets near the park tend to be unsafe at night, and even though ive lived here all my life i wouldnt buy property near there just yet.

greenville - ill pass comment on this, but i wouldnt live there. doesnt serve my purposes

mcginley square - this area is for the most part decent, but i dont travel through here too often. alot of good deals to be had, but id rather look in the heights at similar prices.

To me, the anti-Hoboken comments that frequently pop up here simply highlight the longstanding inferiority complex that JC has always held towards Hoboken. Hell, when I was first looking for a place to live around here, I kept hearing realtors and some city officials sell this place as "The Next Hoboken" (they kept alternating between that and "The Sixth Borough") .Why anyone would want to be "the next Hoboken" is beyond me, because JC has its own vibe going for it - enjoy it and stop fretting about Hoboken! Grow up, and get over it.

hobokenites are too busy dissing themselves and their fellow hoboken residents to care about jc. for proof look at hoboken411.com, and look at the comments posted after almost every blog. it makes jclist look tame by comparison.
