Does it really take 4 helicopters to monitor one road? I wish those guys would at least work out some way to share camera feeds from a single chopper.

The challenge is that most diving in this area is pretty technical because of the cold water, low viz and depth of most interesting sites, like wrecks. A two hour intro might be good to get some people interested in getting certified but it won't be enough to get you into the water for real.

I have some Florsheims in need of a new set of soles. Anyone know a good shoe repair place downtown?

Fresh wild-caught seafood in a good supermarket can often be over $20/lb. Any decent fish at all is going to exceed $10. This "CSF" looks like it's worth at least trying for the 6 deliveries you have to commit to.

Kayakers - looking up info on the restricted waters around Liberty/Ellis (150 yards BTW), I found this:

Could be a cool trip. Unfortunately, it's also full-up, but maybe there are others like it.

JWave - I "think" in the immediate LSP waters the only restricted areas are the no-go zones marked around Liberty and Ellis islands. They are marked with white can bouys and if you cross over, some kind of law enforcement boat will be all over you immediately.

Brewster and other more regular paddlers can add/edit this comment.

Bring a small anchor and lots of line just in case. A 5 lb dumbell attached to a nylon line with a bowline knot held just fine in Manahawkin Bay. For the harbor I would think a grapnel anchor and a lot more line would be needed - and don't anchor in the channel!

The good thing about the inflatable is that, if I did get blown up to the marina, I could fold it up, pack it in its bag, and walk home through the mall with it. People would think I had just had a very damp shopping spree.

On a more amateur note; I had my new blow-up kayak out a few times in the last couple of weeks - in the Sedge Islands at IBSP and in Manahawkin Bay.

I can report that the boat carried me (and a passenger in some cases) safely around with no sinkings or other mishaps.

With the skeg, which I had to buy separately, it seems to track pretty well - just as well as some hard kayaks, in my limited experience. The only caveat to that is wind. It does seem to behave more like a sail or a blimp than a hard boat would.

Can't wait to get it out in LSP!

The category is what counts in amateur road racing. Unless you are an elite runner, you're not going to come close to winning the "open" category. For almost all of us runners, including the mayor, winning a category - especially an age-group - is .... winning. So, Fulop wins the race.

BTW this must have been more of a fun run; I know Fulop can do better than 27 min in a 5K

I was torn between this one and the Intex K2. In the end I had to go with marginally better reviews (by a thin hair) and the mfr's pedigree in making inflatable boats. Not that either is a high end boat, and in the end they are basically identical. Probably made in the same factory in China anyway.

Thanks to the discussion in this thread, I just ordered a Sevylor Fiji kayak to use in Barnegat Bay and hopefully the calmer bits of NY Harbor/Liberty St. Park.

I'll post an update on how it works and I won't blame JC List if I sink!

I've had zebra. It was some of the best grilled red meat I've ever had. If horse tastes anything like it's stripey cousin, I'd line up to try it. Don't knock what you haven't tried - unless it's dogs or cats; one must draw the line somewhere.

Maybe the new JC Whole Foods will have an African Game section.

The track at Ferris may not actually belong to Ferris. Not sure, but for some reason on Google maps it's called "Meluso Park." From what I've seen, it's always open. Can't find any info on who owns/runs the park if it is one...

Ferris has a track, but it is simply a path around a practice field, not a regulation 400 meter track. Don't use it for super-precision speedwork unless you measure it out carefully. Still and all, it's a track and it's downtown.

Aeropress - $23.45 for the whole kit & kaboodle, including filters. No electricity needed. Just a little ab power.

I had a good experience with Seaport Orthopedics on Beekman St. in Manhattan. Not Hudson County, but more accessible by public transportation than most of Hudson County is (couple blocks from the WTC PATH). I saw Dr. Marc Levinson, but each Dr specializes so you may end up seeing a different one.

Their spine surgery specialist - Dr Jeffrey Goldstein, pretty much saved my sister-in-law's back.

Post your favorite and explain why you like it.

Personally, I have a minor coffee device fetish and I've tried a number of different mechanisms, from nonna's little espresso pot to the Kuerig, etc.

Right now my personal favorite is the Aeropress, mentioned by Brewster in another thread (Thanks Brewster).

The Aeropress makes an awesome cup (one at a time), in strengths from dishwater up to almost espresso - it's up to the user. If you try it, you have to learn the "upside down method." It makes a cup with zero grounds in it and no bitterness. If you do it right, you will get a nice coffee-oil sheen on top.

Really an easy DIY job if you can carry a 50 lb. bucket to the roof or have a stronger friend. And it's maybe $70 for the materials vs. 500?+? for a roofer to do it. Buy a 5 gallon can, schlep it up to the roof, stir it with a broomstick or similar long pole for about 20 minutes (this stuff is THICK, so stir it a LOT), then pour a puddle and use a paint roller on a long threaded-end pole. Takes about an hour to do the whole thing on a typical roof. It lasts about 5-7 years before you need to re-coat it. It does make a difference in the heat on your top floor and cooling costs. Works great for both asphalt and rubber type roofing material. Done this many times over 27 years and 3 houses...

What's the coverage of this stuff on an asphalt roll roof that's never been painted? At $79 per bucket, it could end up being a waste of money, since my roof only has 1-2 years left. At some point I plan on replacing it with a IB Roof Systems membrane, where the material itself is white.

Great article. The people involved all sound organized and serious.

I noticed in the article, the WSJ made it sound like the Hall was really far from the "nice" part of Newark Ave. A little perspective is needed here; the building is only about 5 blocks from the Grove St. PATH. It's really part of the same strip - even if that end of it is a little grungier. Having an active music/restaurant/arts space down there would make a really good anchor for that end of the street. Looking forward to it.

Re: Wedding in Jersey City

I totally agree with Brewster. If you ask anyone who was at my wedding what the table decorations looked like, what sort of paper the invitation was on, what song the band played for our dance, or even where the reception was, I doubt anyone but my wife and I would remember. What they do remember is whether or not they had a good time.

Just focus on finding a place that is convenient for people to get to, will make them feel relaxed and comfortable, and can provide what you want in terms of food, drink, atmosphere, music. What should be unique, lasting and memorable is the marriage. The wedding is just a party to celebrate that.
