I hear you, Xerxes.

But back when I moved to Downtown Jersey City, I didn't expect the following chains to have an existing presence in 07302 or eventually have plans to show up to the party:

- Godiva Chocolatier
- Hollister Co.
- A/X Armani Exchange
- Sephora
- Home Depot
- New York Sports Clubs
- Edible Arrangements
- Swarovski Crystal
- Linens 'n Things
- GNC
- Pier 1 Imports
- Macy's
- Target
- South City Grill
- Bath and Body Works
- Modell's
- Starbucks
- Bed Bath & Beyond
- Cos?
- Pro Golf
- The Disney Store
- Wet Seal
- Bertucci's
- Express/Express Men
- Synergy Fitness Clubs
- Gap
- Grand Sichuan
- Ann Taylor Loft
- Chili's Grill & Bar
- A?ropostale
- bebe sport
- Uno Chicago Grill
- Au Bon Pain
- Doubletree Hotels
- Duane Reade
- Bachrach
- Coach
- Victoria's Secret
- The Body Shop
- Aldo Shoes
- Candlewood Suites
- American Eagle Outfitters
- Hale and Hearty Soups
- The Little Gym
- Hyatt Regency Hotels
- Sarku Japan Sushi Bar
- Morton Williams
- Fatburger
- Westin Hotels
- Kohl's
- Arden B.
- It's Greek to Me
- Forever 21
- Brookstone
- Marriott Courtyard Hotels
- Port City Java

Some of these businesses I've listed are obviously not "high-end," I just didn't move here with the anticipation that they would be already be here or would be opening up shop -- not to mention the massive Goldman Sachs Tower or Donald Trump and his big ol' plaza.

It's quite a juxtaposition when you compare what regional, national and international chains have locations in 07302 now to what was here 20 years ago, or even 10 years ago.

At this point, I wouldn't be surprised by the arrival of anything, though I think Sotheby's or Cartier would be more of a stretch than Whole Foods or Trader Joe's!

I definitely don't need a Trader Joe's or Whole Foods here in Downtown Jersey City to be happy, but it is always nice to have extra grocery store shopping options.

I also think that it is inevitable that Trader Joe's, Whole Foods or another higher-end grocery store will make their way into 07302 -- it just may take a little while for it to happen.

In the meantime, I am going to check out the Morton Williams grocery store grand opening festivities that Xerxes mentioned in this post.

I'm all for free hot dogs, free shrimp gyoza and free fruit slices -- not to mention blueberries for 99 cents!

Sure thing my friend.

I am always happy to help when I can and do my best to pass along relevant or interesting information that I come across when I have the time to post.

I hope to try a sandwich from that new place, Marow Deli, on Jersey Avenue at one point in the next week or so.

So many small businesses have crashed and burned on the eastern side of Jersey Avenue between Sushi Tango and Subia's, but I hope this one makes it given its product selection and because of how enthusiastic the owner is.

I really think the store could do quite well as long the surrounding neighborhood is aware of its existence and uses it as a nearby alternative to A-1 Deli.

Problem solved; neighborhood improved.

While it's an aggressive solution, I kind of like this idea.

Do you know of anywhere else this has been done?

It's definitely not high-end dining or anything, but it's cheap, filling, interesting and just around the corner.

If you like curries and you like cabbage, you may want to try the Curry Turkey With Cabbage on Thursday.

I'm happy I did.

Wegmans is a grocery store chain that many suburban yuppies tend to love, and a sizable chunk of the mainstream masses adore their stores as well. Believe it or not, their prices are quite competitive (especially on the normal supermarket kind of stuff). But they have all kinds of imported and high-end specialty items too.

Don't be freaked out though, they aren't planning on coming here. And, in my view, the new mega stores they're building in the suburbs would be a horrendous fit with Downtown Jersey City. They're truly massive, and while I like them just fine in a suburban setting (though they can be a bit overwhelming size-wise), they would absolutely have no business being in this immediate area.

It sounds as if their stores are SO not up your alley, but you can learn all about them at Wegmans.com if you're the least bit curious.

Okay, I promise not to post each time I try something new at Nicole's, but I went there for a second time this afternoon for some takeout.

Today I got the Jerk Chicken for $6.50. While it was good, the Curry Turkey With Cabbage I had earlier in the week was tastier and a better deal at $5.00.

This Monday or the following Monday I want to try the Pepper Pot Chicken daily special. I am intrigued by the idea of Nicole's cassareep sauce. And it's cheap at only five bucks!

Have any JCListers out there ever tried Nicole's Pepper Pot Chicken? If so, did you dig it?

It's kind of sad that I have lived near this place for so long but never ventured in until now. But better late than never as they say!

I did have some amazing jerk chicken not too long ago. I raided my boyfriend's refrigerator one night and found some leftover food from some new place on Grove Street, but I forgot the name he told me. It was great! It had a Jamaican Soul Food flavor to me. The flavors were so strong I definitely needed some white rice to diffuse the intensity.

I need to indulge in some Golden Krust next time I'm in the mall at Newport. I had a "spicy" Jamaican beef patty last time I was by that place, but it didn't do much to satisfy me. I need to get an all-out dinner there already. Maybe it's high time for some braised oxtails!

Regarding your mention of the place on Grove Street, I think you may be talking about Soul Flavors. Here's a link to their website if you're interested. They have jerk chicken on their menu (but I don't see it listed on their website for some reason).

Kanye West is supposed to be a big fan of Soul Flavors along with a number of these JCListers. Their catering company's client list is celebrity-laden (for all the US Weekly readers out there) and includes Jay-Z, Spike Lee, Lauryn Hill, Martha Stewart, Madonna, The Neptunes, Jon Bon Jovi, Common, The Roots, B. Smith, Ashanti, Corey Glover, Alice in Chains, Me'shell Ndeg?ocello, LL Cool J, Sean John "Diddy" Combs, etc.

I think you may be over-analyzing the situation.

In Pittsburgh, there are potholes all over the place, but you can tell the city tries to keep up with things because one sees road-construction crews all over the place.

Here, there's minimal attempt at fixing roads. The roads that have been repaved seem fine (e.g., Manila near the tunnel).

Although I don't have inside information, I can infer a few things from a few basic facts:

1. Property taxes are pretty high around here.
2. I don't see road construction crews around the neighborhood.

The conclusion is that the city is spending our money on things other than road upkeep.

I myself am a bottom-up kinda guy. I always like to see gov't money spent on the basics first: infrastructure, schools, police/fire. But things don't always go that way, do they?

Heheh. Thanks for your feedback.

You could be right about me overanalyzing (which I tend to do). It's also sort of why I posed those questions and wonder if anyone has looked into this more deeply.

You mentioned your experiences in Pittsburgh, and I know what you mean. Mine have run the gamut.

I lived in Northeastern Pennsylvania for a number of years and the roads in my city were horrendous in some places (though they are actually worse here).

I also lived in Northern Virginia before moving here and the roads in my area were spectacular.

I was just trying to figure out if it's more of a lack-of-money thing, a lack-of-standards thing, a lack-of-citizen-demand thing, a weird terrain thing, some combination of those things or something else entirely (like the stuff I listed earlier about poor construction, lackluster maintenance, cronyism, etc.).

I'm also curious to know if JCListers (especially the longtime residents) are finding that the road situation is actually improving.

Oh yes -- we all love Wegmans! But they have no plans for stores in Hudson County. At the moment, their focus is on building new stores in Maryland and Virginia.

JCList.com's very own Bill463 works for Wegmans and chats about it on here from time to time. If you're a fan of their stores, I believe their closest location to Jersey City is in Woodbridge (if I'm remembering correctly).

In an attempt to stay active in his retirement (and to make some extra cash), my dad works at one of their locations in Virginia. He loves working there and I always have a blast visiting him when he's on the job.

If you're interested in reading back through some of the lively conversations JCListers have had about Wegmans, just type their name in the search box on the top left corner of this page, hit the search button and read all about it. It may make for a good read.

We all could try contacting Whole Foods: newstore.requests@wholefoods.com

I meant to post this a few days ago, but I thought that those who are hungry for Whole Foods in Jersey City may find this Washington Post article interesting.

It's called, you guessed it, "Hungry for Whole Foods." It's about a gentrifying neighborhood's quest to get them to open up in their DC neighborhood. And while it's from 2006, it touches on many of the same issues we've been discussing in Downtown Jersey City today.

Here are some interesting quotes from the article:

HOW WHOLE FOODS MAY POSITIVELY IMPACT A COMMUNITY:

"Here's one for the B-school textbooks: the Whole Foods Effect. In Pittsburgh's East Liberty neighborhood, a Whole Foods is credited with triggering a revival. In Sarasota, Fla., developers say they pre-sold all 95 apartments in a condominium tower because a Whole Foods opened on the first floor. And in Washington, many trace the revival of Logan Circle and the 14th Street corridor to the opening in 2000 of a Whole Foods on P Street NW."

WHAT RESIDENTS ARE DOING TO GET WHOLE FOODS' ATTENTION:

"Whole Foods has received about 500 e-mails from people in Columbia Heights. Some bear messages as simple as "We beg you!" Others contain sophisticated references to the company's stock price, corporate strategy and the neighborhood's demographics. Many of the writers said they admired the company's social conscience and employment practices."

"Robin Kang, 29, a computer specialist who bought a Victorian on Newton Place less than a year ago, began the e-mail campaign using a Web site he created. His role models are the Logan Circle residents who enticed Whole Foods with a 52-page demographic study that demonstrated the affluence of homeowners within half a mile. They also flooded Whole Foods' headquarters with 3,000 pre-printed postcards."

WHOLE FOODS IS LISTENING AND RESPONDING:

"For three years, Whole Foods has been weighing whether to locate a store in the heart of Columbia Heights, at 14th Street and Park Road NW, where a New York developer, Grid Properties Inc., is building a massive retail center on public land. The center, scheduled to open in 2008, will include Washington's first Target and a Best Buy."

HOW THIS PERTAINS TO DOWNTOWN JERSEY CITY:

I just thought I'd throw this article out there for anyone who's interested in starting some sort of stepped-up campaign to bring Whole Foods to the neighborhood. While I am quite content without a Whole Foods or Trader Joe's, either would be a really nice addition to 07302.

It is clear that many of the pothole-laden streets crisscrossing Downtown Jersey City can do major damage to automobiles and bicycles (and even to people if you don't watch your step).

My questions are:

What is this really due to? Is it inaccurate engineering and planning work? Poor construction and execution? Insufficient funding? Lack of pothole repair and follow-up? Or does it have something to do with the ground beneath us (like could the soil be shifting beneath our roads more than we realize)?

It's easy to simply say "all of the above" and "it's corruption" or "it's lack of leadership" and "blame the city government," but I guess I am just trying to understand the underlying sources of the problem (assuming that they go beyond cronyism).

Has anyone out there had a chance to dig deeper into this issue?

Nothing like having a good hardy down home breakfast on an early Saturday or Sunday morning before spending the day shopping until you drop! I also find hotels a good place to have breakfast because they have buffets and cooks cooking you an omlet with anything you want right in front of you. I drove to the Marriot or Hilton in Newark with my bf one day on the recommendation of a buddy of ours. Although it was a hotel, it was quite pleasant. All you can eat too. The spread was big. My bf is a big ex-Navy muscular football jock that can put away an entire slab of bacon, a dozen eggs, a loaf of bread and a gallon of milk. I've never seen him so happy eating...food that is.

Glad to hear you dig it. Not to get this thread too off topic, but do you know if any of the hotels in Downtown Jersey City offer decent breakfast or brunch buffets?

The photo I just saw is below and a larger version of the image may be accessed via the restaurant's "Coming Soon" section of their homepage at BrownstoneDiner.com.

So I just went into Marow Deli again and it is confirmed: they do make a whole range of sandwiches to order!

I also took a closer look around and they have all of the essentials one may need in a pinch -- it's a really smart selection of stuff actually.

Here's what caught my eye:

- Milk
- Eggs
- Orange Juice
- Cereal (All Kinds)
- Canned Soup (All Kinds)
- Canned Spaghetti (Along the Lines of Chef Boyardee)
- Pet Food
- Detergents (Dishwasher, Laundry, Dish)
- Tin Foil
- Plastic Wrap
- Condoms
- Ice Cream
- Batteries
- Over-the-Counter Cold Medicines
- Soda
- Paper Towels
- Cold Drinks (Like Iced Tea, Snapple, etc.)
- Candy
- Cold Cuts and Marinated Meats (Boar's Head)
- Toilet Paper
- Gum
- Snack Cakes (Along the Lines of Hostess and Tastykake)

That's all I can remember for the moment. But if I think of anything else, I'll post it.

It's like a nicer, cleaner version of A-1 Deli on Grove Street without the claustrophobia-inducing lines or the panhandling out front (yet). It's also everything I wished Moe's Deli on Newark Ave. would be (but isn't).

I am rooting for them and I really hope they do well.

I spotted a brand-new place called Marrow Deli that just opened today on Jersey Avenue between Wayne Street and Christopher Columbus Drive (right next door to Sushi Tango and across the street from Big Chef and Wonder Bagels).

I spoke with the clerk and he was very excited to be open for business. He greeted me with a big smile and told me that they plan to be open 24 hours a day starting next week.

They feature Boar's Head meats and prepare sandwiches to order. I was only inside for a second, but I saw that they have cold drinks, ice cream, canned soup, candy, gum and all kinds of convenience store-type items you would find at such locations as A-1 Deli on Grove Street.

Everything inside is freshly-painted, shiny and brand-new. I am happy to see that they're right around the corner and I hope they're here in the neighborhood for a long time to come!

Glad you liked Van Vorst Park -- it SO rocks! Did you get a chance to walk down Mercer Street as well? It's mighty groovy.

And yeah, unless you find something really awesome at a great price on my block (Wayne between Jersey and Barrow), it's probably best you avoid it all together.

I hope the A-1 people end up coming through for you too.

If not, did you pop into Cruz Furniture on Grove Street yet? I was told that the owner or manager there has a number of great apartments he rents out in the Hamilton Park area, but you may want to stop in there and double check or give them a call. I just Googled them -- they're at 311 Grove Street and their number is (201) 333-1292.

Regarding "For Rent" signs, I honestly haven't been looking too hard for them lately, but they always seem to be there. I tend to notice them more when I have friends looking for new places. When I am out running errands today and tomorrow, I'll see if I see any "For Rent" signs and I'll post or PM anything of interest.

Before LHN went in, the lots those units are on overlooked a former brownfield littered with scrap metal, old tires, and trash, as well as two abandoned buildings. Now they overlook landscaped streets and buildings with people living inside. So yeah, I think its safe to say that LHN has helped property values of the lots on Grand Street.

There are plenty of reasons why any given condo has not sold. It could be that the credit crisis, also going on for a year now, has kept away buys who cannot get mortgages. Maybe the units are poorly laid out, or poorly constructed, or just priced too high.

I agree with ianmac47.

As Liberty Harbor North is developed further, it's highly likely the brand-new LHN neighborhood will help boost nearby property values.

I haven't thought about what the area around Jersey Avenue and Grand Street used to look like in quite awhile.

When I first moved here in 2001, it was SUCH A DUMP with dilapidated buildings and littered empty lots.

The Jersey City Medical Center was still located where The Beacon is now, the Brownstone Diner and Pancake Factory was a rickety little joint called the Newport Pancake House (before they knocked it down and started over) and there were a series of deserted buildings over where the new Primary and Middle schools now stand. And behind the Pancake House stood an abandoned-looking gas station.

The new hospital center, new public schools and reborn restaurant are a welcome addition to the neighborhood.

Would the revitalization have happened as quickly without LHN on the horizon?

Maybe or maybe not, but every little bit helps and I welcome all of the positive changes to the area.

New Jersey itself is getting more expensive by the day, so I think condos in Jersey City like Liberty Harbor are going to be more pricey than say, Metuchen, because of the proximity to NYC and all that the area has to offer.

As far as the architecture and walkways, street construction that people are complaining about... it happens, not everything can be the way we all want. For the sake of sounding too corny, we just have to make the best of it and know that what we can't change is not worth wasting our energy complaining about.

Downtown JC has been developing for years and very successfully. LHN is just a newcomer taking advantage of the momentum. There is nothing wrong with that, just don't credit them with the movement.

I fully agree with jennymayla.

Not to be an attack dog (arf!), but Liberty Harbor North hasn't "revamped" Jersey City -- a place which many have labeled as "up-and-coming" long before LHN's arrival.

It's definitely nice to have LHN along for the ride and I look forward to see what ends up being built over there, but I can safely say that most of us were just fine before Liberty Harbor North broke ground and we'll still be a-okay once the development is completed.
