Affordable Housing is code for cheap housing that is excluded from taxes. It is a contract that pays the city a flat fee and no school taxes. Really, it is housing that illegal immigrants get first shot at, I did a lot of voter registration in the 1990s and 90% of affordable housing then had immigrants. It does not mean they are bad people, but people should know why their taxes go up.

I was there when politicians came to JC and asked citizens to vote for the income tax. They said it would replace property taxes. So, they lied. This was 1976. Too bad the internet was not around then, but the mayor and city council should hold them accountable for their promise of the past. I still remember one politician saying property tax for public schools is not fair.

It's a $159 million increase from last year. Whether that is justified is arguable, but many of the aging buildings do need serious work.
The problem is that Jersey City has seen MAJOR reductions in state funding for schools. If you do a web search, you'll find lots of info about that. This is a good site that presents analysis of the data: https://civicparent.org/2022/03/13/put ... ax-rate-into-perspective/ So the question is, if not by raising taxes, how do we make up for the funding cuts? I feel that the city and BOE really need to work together. The state is cutting back money it normally gives to Jersey City because "rich people" live here. The money the state gave Jersey City in the past was based on a high poverty rate. But mayors since the 1990 have been giving out abatements, basically robbing the school system of taxes.
JC has been building more affordable housing which pays nothing to the school sytem but brings in more school age children and the state has decided to cut back on state aid. Then the public school board members gave contracts to teachers which will give them six figure salaries with a BA down the road. So, now the regular homeowners are required to make up the shortfall of the state, our local generous board members, and support the tax abatments that pay nothing and subsidize the education of affordable housing and rent control tenants.

Didn't you get the letters or read about it? We knew it was coming, just not "how bad". And it's BAD. My annual taxes just went from $18k to $24k, so that's another $500/month for absolutely nothing more in services. And to think that 35 years ago I was paying about $950 in annual taxes...

Hello Group, we are looking to gather our neighbors voices in support of allowing properties who own an Electric Vehicle, the ability to apply for conforming/permitted use of their carport for charging of their vehicle.
With the recent push throughout NJ for a move to Electric Vehicles, many people have been making the switch from Gas to EV. This is a positive step in the right direction around Jersey City, removing gas emissions from the area. This group/thread is gathering voices in support of the environmental move, as we ask the city to consider a progressive move in the right direction by allowing EV owners to utilize their carport/curb space properly. Just as malls/Whole Foods/municipal lots/city garages etc. in general are helping the State of NJ by incentivizing the switch to EV through providing space to recharge, we are asking Jersey City to join the movement and consider a similar program by opening permit application for private property use allowing those with conforming carports to utilize the space for their Electric Vehicles.

Generally agreed, given how hard it is to attract decent teachers to an inner-city public school system. In Europe, teaher salaries are generally higher than in the United States while administrations are paid less and are smaller. We spend way too much on school administrations.
Additionally, teachers' unions, while they may be well meaning, have become too powerful and almost as bad as the administrations they fight against. They work to protect bad teachers who should be fired while not really serving the rest of their membership, from whom they happily take the mandatory membership dues, as I would presume Jersey City schools are a "closed shop". However, even in a closed shop you have the option to opt out of the portion of membership dues that goes to political campaigns. No union will make any effort to tell you this, however. Quote:

I personally believe starting salaries for school teachers should be as high as starting salaries for first year bankers and auditors with the Big 4 who have a bachelor's degree. It's the only way to attract the best talent.

Education does not justify putting liens on people's homes for education. A large part of school population are non-citizens, so we seized citizens' homes in order to pay for education. I voted for the income tax in 1976 because politicians promised that money would be used for public school education. They lied. The lottery and sales tax were also promised as a source of revenue.
This is a Democratic city, and we allow Gov. Murphy to get away with not funding the public school but his state budget is $50.6 billion, much higher than Chris Christie's budget of $34 billion and more millions went to our school system.

It's like everyone 'heard' that the public schools are so bad but don't actually look into it. We fell into that trap. Our child went to a private pre-school and then to a charter (like most families we knew). But now we, and 90% of the families we know do did the same thing, have switched to our local public school! We're much happier. We found the charter we were at to be lacking resources, and high teacher turnover rate (more so than public schools) was making the few good programs inconsistent. For example music was terrible, then a new teacher made it suddenly great, then left and it was terrible again.
So maybe it is just the bubble I'm in, but perhaps this is changing? I get that some kids need smaller classes or are otherwise better suited to something outside of the normal school system. But generally, it drives me crazy when people just go to the charters without questioning!!

An article published by Terrance McDonald who formally worked for the Jersey Journal did an article on the teachers' contract. Teachers will be in the six figures based on a certain level with a BA. So, yes, they are paid well. My problem with this is the people who use public schools, many live in buildings that will not pass this increase on, according to ordinances by the city. So, if you vote for school board members, who pass these contracts, you should not be exempt from paying the bill.

Do teachers in Jersey City get paid well, or like so many inter-city school districts, is there a bloated administration who is overpaid? I don't have a problem with teachers getting paid well and getting pensions if they are doing a good job, but bloated and overpaid administrations run rampant in this country.
Additionally, some teachers' unions have mandatory membership and don't do much more than take sizeable dues out of their members' paychecks and protect rotten teachers while doing nothing for teachers doing their job well but have problems with the systems' bureaucracy. I presume the Jersey City school system is a "closed shop" meaning all teachers have to join the union.

The "estimated" tax bill posted the new rate. Of course, the rate could change. But it's what we have for now. It's not 33%. Still, it's very high. The communication was weak for certain. But the increase to the budget was in fact published in the news and broadcast all over social media. So most of us shouldn't be totally surprised. The increase while painful and unwelcome was in the range I expected based upon what I read. If I were a parent I would absolutely move to another town. In fact, I would move to Newark where real estate taxes are less and then send my kid to Seton Hall Prep or Mt. St. Dominic. Of course, I'm from Newark and went to SHP. Still, these real estate taxes do not warrant staying for most people if you're sending your children to school here.
