View Larger Map Jersey City shopkeeper fights off would-be robber Published: Monday, August 08, 2011, 3:00 AM By Charles Hack/The Jersey Journal A Jersey City storekeeper put up a fight to keep his shop from being robbed Saturday, according to police reports. The 52-year-old victim told police that a man came into his grocery store at 299 Martin Luther King Drive at around 3:30 p.m. and asked to buy a cigar, reports said. When the store owner turned to reach for the cigar, the man said, ?Hurry up, old man, before I rob you.? The store owner then saw the man coming around the counter and heading for the cash register, reports said. The shopkeeper slammed the register shut and the suspect attacked him, reports said. After a brief scuffle, which left the store owner with a scratch on his left forearm and swelling in his left eye, the robber walked out of the store, reports said.
