A 43-year-old man bleeding heavily from his left hand told police - who were called to the assault at Gifford and Bergen avenues at 8:26 a.m. - that he was defending himself after being slashed in the hand with a broken bottle, reports said. The man was swinging a hammer at Payton when police arrived, reports said. The victim told police that Payton punched him in the face after he complimented the suspect's girlfriend, reports said. After Payton punched him, the victim said, he followed his attacker in a car to Gifford and Bergen avenues and when he got out the car, Payton slashed a finger on his left hand him with a bottle, reports said.
