Man's body fished out of river

Monday, August 31, 2009

Authorities found a male body in the Hudson River on Saturday at the Second Street pier in Jersey City at around 9:20 a.m.

A construction worker spotted the body, Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said. Emergency units from the Jersey City police and fire departments responded to the scene and police pulled the body out of the water at about 10:30 a.m., DeFazio said.

Medical examiners on scene said there was no visible trauma on the body, said DeFazio, adding the body had been in the water more than one day.

He said the body was identified as a middle-aged man with shoulder-length hair, wearing a red T-shirt with the word "Peru'" and a silhouette of a llama on the front.

There was no wallet, documents or other form of identification, DeFazio said.

The man was carrying five one dollar bills, a New York City Public Library tag, and a New York City metro card, he added.

The identity of the body and cause of death are still under investigation.
