Shot in head as 3 rob him

Tuesday, July 08, 2008

A 23-year-old Jersey City man is lucky to be alive after he was shot in the back of the head during a robbery yesterday, police.

The man, who police said was in critical but stable condition yesterday afternoon at the Jersey City Medical Center, was walking to his home in the Lafayette section of Jersey City at 2:42 p.m. when three men approached the victim on Whiton Street, police said.

Authorities said the three demanded money until one man pulled out a handgun and shot the victim, who was scheduled to have surgery to remove the bullet, officials said.

Jersey City police are trying to figure out what happened to a man they found lying in the street in a pool of blood with a fractured skull, officials said.

Police on patrol near the corner of Crescent Avenue and Harmon Street spotted the 32-year-old resident of Monticello Avenue lying in the intersection and bleeding from the head, police reports said.

He ignored officers who were asking him what had happened and repeatedly reached for an object beside him as a large crowd gathered, reports said. The officers picked up the object, which turned out to be a 12-inch metal bar wrapped in white cloth, reports said.

The man was rushed to the Jersey City Medical Center, where it was determined that his skull was fractured and he had bleeding on his brain, reports said.

At the hospital, police asked him what happened and he said he didn't know, reports said, adding that they asked him if he remembered anything at all and he said "No," reports said.

He was listed in stable condition last night, a spokesman for the Medical Center said.
