Pay hikes, higher insurance costs for Jersey City firefighters in new contract

JERSEY CITY — The city has finalized a new contract with the Uniformed Fire Fighters Association of Jersey City that provides a 6.5 percent raise over four years for firefighters at the top end of the pay scale.

In return, the union, Local 1066, has agreed to increased health insurance costs and other changes that the city says will save taxpayer dollars.

The four-year agreement, which was approved by the City Council yesterday, also allows fewer firefighters to take comp days off at one time, a response to a growing absenteeism problem that has pitted firefighters against City Hall.
