Jersey City councilman on moving police HQ: 'Might as well put it in Kearny'

JERSEY CITY — The city's plan to move police headquarters to a public-housing complex on the West Side would put public-safety officials out of the reach of most city residents, Councilman Rich Boggiano said today.

"Might as well put it in Kearny," Boggiano said at this morning's City Council meeting, referring to the Hudson County municipality to Jersey City's west. "What's the difference?"

Mayor Steve Fulop announced in February that his administration intends to relocate top public-safety officials from Journal Square to Marion Gardens, a public-housing complex on the western edge of the city, near Sip Avenue and Routes 1&9. Fulop gave members of the media a preview of the new office last week.

Boggiano, a retired police detective who represents Ward C on the council, sought this morning to postpone a vote that would have approved the move, saying the lack of public transportation near Marion Gardens will put the new offices "out of reach for 99 percent of the people of this city."
