JERSEY CITY MEMORIAL DAY EVENTS:
-- On May 24, the Polish Army Veterans Association, Katyn Forest Massacre Memorial Committee, Polish American Congress and representatives of Polish-American community groups will hold a memorial service at 10 a.m. in front of the Katyn monument at Exchange Place. The event will acknowledge the 75th anniversary of the Katyn Forest Massacre and the fifth anniversary of the Smolensk airplane crash.
-- On Memorial Day, May, 25, the Lafayette Amvets Post 33 meets at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Church at Pacific and Bramhall avenues for a march through the neighborhood, followed by a Mass at 10 a.m. at the church. They will then head to Ercel F. Webb/Lafayette Park to honor the deceased members of their post and end the day with a luncheon at the Route 440 Diner at 405 Route 440.
-- The Sgt. Anthony Park Association will hold it annual ceremony on Memorial Day at 10:30 a.m. The event will be held at the Sgt. Anthony Park on Palisade Avenue and will honor the memory of military heroes, in particular Sgt. Joseph Anthony, a World War II hero who lost his life in the Pacific during the last days of war.
-- At a 3 p.m. ceremony on Memorial Day, the Jersey City Vietnam Veterans Committee will dedicate nine new memorial stones in Pershing Field for Vietnam veterans who have died in the past year. All are welcome to attend. A total of 133 stones are at the monument: 65 for Jersey City residents who died in the Vietnam War and 68 who served there and have died since then.
-- Memorial Day Mass will be celebrated at Holy Name Cemetery, 823 West Side Ave., on Monday, May 25, at 11 a.m. as part of the third annual "Serving God and Country: A Memorial Day Salute to Our Heroes" with Bishop Thomas A. Donato.
-- On Memorial Day, May 25, at 1 p.m., the Historic Jersey City and Harsimus Cemetery, 435 Newark Ave., Jersey City, will have a free military and musical tribute to honor veterans.
