New Jersey is one of a large group of states whose three most popular last names are identical.
More Garden State residents have the surnames Smith, Williams and Johnson than any other, according to Ancestry.com. Those are also the three most frequently found last names in Alaska, Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, Mississippi, Illinois, Michigan, Georgia, Florida and North Carolina. In New York, the top three last names are Smith, Williams and Brown; in Pennsylvania it's Smith, Miller and Williams. The last name Smith is so widespread that it's among the top three in all but five states: California, Hawaii, New Mexico, North Dakota and Minnesota. Hawaii and Massachusetts also stand out. Hawaii's most popular names (Lee, Wong, Kim) aren't in the top three anywhere else; and only in heavily Irish Massachusetts is Sullivan among the most popular, the report said. http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2015 ... s_in_nj.html#incart_river
