Isaw the crash scene and think this has to do more with bad driving than drag racing. This accident occurred on the southbound lane of 440 before the light so this was a loook what I can do with yhis cara accident.

It?s very sad that a young person died in a horrible crash ..rip and prayers. I recall over the years a few people have crashed and died in that spot either hitting the trees or the telephone pole.

I don?t know if those kids were drag racing or not. But if so it is just another one of the problems in JC that never gets addressed. People in Country Village and Society Hill have been complaining for years about the almost nightly drag racing on rt 440.

It is especially bad between Danforth and the city line since there are no traffic lights. From around midnight the 50+ cars that sound like a swarm of German Messerschmitt?s (or more appropriately Japanese Mitsubishi A6M Zero?s ) race back and forth for hours. How a Jersey City, County, or Bayonne cop doesn?t hear it is beyond me.

440 and Beyond: An Investigation of Illegal Street Racing in Jersey City

The plaza on route 440 in Jersey City, NJ, is a popular meeting place for car racers. More specifically, the Dunkin Donuts? parking lot serves as the first meeting point before the illegal activity takes place. On any given day or weekend around midnight, you could find a group of low riding Hondas and Toyotas and modified Mazda?s getting ready to head to illegal street races, and today is no different.

News12 is identifying the fatality as a teenager. They have video of the accident here:

It's a wonder there were any survivors. Tragic.

CBS New York
TRI-STATE NEWS HEADLINES

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) ? Police are investigating a deadly crash that happened in Jersey City early Saturday morning.

As 1010 WINS? Derricke Dennis reported, a compact low-rider car hit a tree and split into two at around 4 a.m. on Route 440 near Danforth Avenue.

Both men were ejected from the vehicle, Dennis reported. The passenger in the car was killed, and the driver is listed in serious condition.

Witnesses said the fiery crash looks to be the result of drag racing.

?I?m pretty sure because look at that car, there?s nothing left,? one woman told Dennis.

The mangled wreck landed just feet from a nearby gas station.
?I heard a very loud noise and I come out to see car in two pieces,? the manager said.

He said the man who survived the crash was responsive and talking.

?The guy was normal, not like drunk,? he said.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
