City Hall in Jersey City stacked with Fulop allies, campaign vets and donors

By Terrence T. McDonald/The Jersey Journal

Visitors to Jersey City City Hall may be forgiven for thinking they've walked into Mayor Steve Fulop's campaign headquarters.

Muhammed Akil, who worked to elect Fulop ally Ward F City Councilwoman Diane Coleman, is Fulop's chief of staff, making $120,544 as one of the most powerful people in City Hall.

David Donnelly, who backed out of running as Fulop's Ward B council candidate but remained a supporter, earns $93,600 as a senior mayoral adviser.

Doug Carlucci, another Coleman campaign vet, makes $60,000 as a Fulop aide, as does Domenick Bauer, a volunteer coordinator with Fulop's mayoral campaign.

And those are just the folks working at Fulop's side.

Since he first made waves as a politician in 2004, Fulop, 37, has railed against patronage hires. During his two terms on the City Council, he regularly attacked then-Mayor Jerramiah Healy, whom he unseated last May, for spending taxpayer dollars on salaries for political allies.
