former substitute teacher at a private school with campuses in Jersey City and Hoboken was sentenced today to 12 years and one month in prison for distributing images of child sexual abuse over the Internet, U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman said.

Guy West, 45, of Jersey City, pleaded guilty on Oct. 24 to one count of distribution of child pornography. In addition to the prison term, U.S. District Judge Peter Sheridan sentenced West to a lifetime of supervised release. Restitution is to be determined.

According to the initial criminal complaint, West, who supervised children ages 2 to 14 at Stevens Cooperative School, admitted to having more than 100,000 pornographic images and videos of young boys on his home computer.

According to court documents and and statements made in court, West admitted that on Dec. 18, 2012, he made images and videos of child pornography stored on his computer available for others to download via a peer-to-peer file-sharing network.

On that date, an undercover law enforcement agent successfully downloaded 120 images and 24 videos of child sexual abuse from West via the file-sharing network.

As part of his guilty plea, West agreed to forfeit the computers and computer accessories he used to commit the offense.

Among the agencies credited by Fishman in the investigation are Jersey City Police Department and the Hudson County Prosecutor?s Office.

A Jersey City man who taught children at a private school with campuses in Jersey City and Hoboken pleaded guilty to child pornography charges today in federal court in Trenton, authorities said.

Guy West, 45, was arrested in January on distribution of child pornography charges. According to the criminal complaint, West, who supervised children ages 2 to 14 at Stevens Cooperative School, admitted to having more than 100,000 pornographic images and videos of young boys on his home computer.

In December, West made images and videos of child pornography available in a peer-to-peer file-sharing network on his home computer. Undercover law enforcement agents downloaded 120 images and 24 videos of child sexual abuse from West via the file-sharing network.
West, who was a permanent substitute teacher at Stevens Cooperative School for 15 years, was arrested at his Henry Street home in Jersey City on Jan. 7.

School officials at the time said they were cooperating with the FBI and local authorities, and it is believed that the school and its students were not involved in the incident.

The school's has two campuses, one in the Newport section of Jersey City and one in Hoboken. West was fired by Stevens a day after his arrest, school officials said.

As a part of his guilty plea, West agreed to forfeit the computers and computer accessories he used to commit the offense. West faces at least five years in prison with a maximum of 20, and a $250,000 fine. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Feb. 4.
