Mayor Steven M. Fulop, along with Councilman Daniel Rivera, announced today that in conjunction with the Jersey City Department of Recreation, the city has launched a boxing program.

The program, which was founded for Jersey City youth between the ages of eight and 18, will begin on Tuesday, August 20.

"Residents have been asking for a boxing program for our youth for several years and we are pleased to get this program off of the ground," said Fulop. "Programs like this provide a positive and fun outlet for our youth, while keeping them healthy, active, and engaged."

The free boxing program is for both boys and girls and will be held from 4 P.M. until 8 P.M., Monday through Thursday at MS #7.

Any parent that is interested in registering their child can visit MS #7 during program hours. In order to register, a child must be accompanied by his or her parent.

All equipment will be provided at the sight and participants should wear comfortable clothing such as shirts, t-shirts, and sneakers.

The upstart youth boxing program is in addition to a youth scuba diving program, which will begin in September, and a cricket program that will begin later in the fall.

Councilman Rivera, a longtime baseball coach and youth mentor who has also been a strong advocate for the boxing program and for the expansion of the city's recreational activities, added, "We know the benefits of a strong recreational department extend well beyond the boxing ring or the basketball court, and we want to provide as many Jersey City children as possible the opportunity to participate in our recreational programs."
