For more than four years, the engineering firm Birdsall Services Group funneled illegal campaign contributions to New Jersey politicians by asking a handful of top employees to write personal checks for $300 or less, which did not have to be reported to the state, and then reimbursing them with salary bonuses.

But one piece of the puzzle ? who received Birdsall's money ? has remained a mystery.

Until now.

A trove of company records obtained by The Star-Ledger exposes for the first time the hundreds of politicians, from mayors and council candidates to county freeholders and some of the most well-known New Jersey powerbrokers, whose campaigns profited from Birdsall's crimes.
