Four Jersey City boys charged in shooting of 18-year-old from Elizabeth

Published: Monday, August 27, 2012, 3:00 AM
By Charles Hack/The Jersey Journal

Four juveniles were arrested Saturday after plainclothes Jersey City cops saw a 16-year-old boy shoot an 18-year-old Elizabeth man, police said.

The shooting occurred in the parking lot of the McDonald?s at the Hub shopping center on Martin Luther King Drive at 9:41 p.m., reports said.

Responding to a report of a dispute between two groups, police saw a 16-year-old Grant Avenue boy draw a handgun from his waistband and shoot the 18-year-old, reports said.

The shooter fled, gun in hand, with three other boys, but they were all caught at Ocean Avenue and Forrest Street and the semi-automatic handgun was recovered, police said.

Arrested were two 16-year-old Grant Avenue boys, a 15-year-old Delaware Avenue boy, and a 16-year-old Wegman Parkway boy, reports said.

The Wegman Parkway resident was found with a bullet in a pocket, reports said.

The Elizabeth man was treated at the Jersey City Medical Center and released, a hospital spokesman said.

Charged in attack with broken glass

A Jersey City man was arrested Friday after allegedly striking a man with a shard of glass during a fight, police reports said.

Luis A. Bastidas, 33, of Duncan Avenue, was charged with possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, aggravated assault and unlawful possession of a weapon, reports said.

Police were called to an apartment building on Corbin Avenue near Broadway at 8:17 p.m. Friday and found Bastidas standing outside bleeding from his right hand, reports said.

Bastidas pointed toward a basement saying someone was hurt, reports said.

A police officer followed drops of blood in the hallway into the blood-spattered basement and found a 48-year-old man bleeding heavily from his lips and his right eye swollen shut, reports said.

Police found a broken glass cup they believe was used in the attack and a large kitchen knife was taken into evidence, reports said.

Bastidas claimed he was defending himself, reports said.

Boy busted for gun possession

A 15-year-old Jersey City boy was busted carrying a handgun after he rode by cops on his bicycle early yesterday, police said.

When the teen passed officers on his bike on Rose Avenue near Grant Avenue at 12:48 a.m., cops noticed the boy adjust a bulge in his waistband with his right hand and appear ?wide-eyed? when he saw the patrol car, reports said.

Cops chased the boy to Clerk Street where he ducked down behind an SUV, reports said.

The boy complied with an order to come out with his hands in the air and police found the gun, which contained three bullets, next to a wheel of the SUV, reports said.
