On this note, I wish to remind people that they should NEVER buy their pedigree puppy from a pet store or from one of these businesses that say they sell AKC dogs. These poor puppies are the products of puppy mills.

I was at Banfield's in PetSmart earlier this month. Standing next to me were 2 women with an adorable puppy wrapped in a towel. You didn't have to be a vet to know this poor little thing was very sick. They were telling the receptionist that they had bought the pup from some place & that it was guaranteed a genuine AKC, healthy puppy with top of the line show breeding. Less than a week after it was throwing up & passing bloodied stools. They were escorted into an examination room. I hope the poor little thing made a recovery.

There is no sound reason why anyone should buy a pet from a pet store or from anyone who is doing basement and backyard breeding. 90% of these dogs are from puppy mills. My personal goal for 2012 is that Jersey City adopts an ordinance banning the sale of dogs and cats unless it's a registered rescue organization, Humane Society/Shelter or a Veterinarian Hospital.

From the NJSPCA Facebook page:
NJSPCA and the Ocean County Health Department raided and shutdown the Puppies Galore Pet Shop this week in Ocean County. Thirty Nine (39) were removed with at least 26 of them being sick. This is an open and ongoig case so no more details can be released at this time. Remember please that 80% - 90% of puppies being sold in Pet Stores are the products of Puppie Mills. Please adopt DO NOT shop.

Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy announced this week that the Department of Health & Human Services/Bureau of Animal Control has been awarded a $79,500 grant from PetSmart Charities to help end the overwhelming surrendering of unwanted animals with a targeted spay/neuter program. This grant will allow the City to help pet owners spay or neuter 400 dogs and 600 cats in a particular zip code, in this case 07305.

The 07305 zip-code was chosen because of the amount of owner surrenders, strays, dead animals reported in that particular area. NOTE: Because the grant money is limited, all spay/neuters are on a first come, first serve basis, and all dogs must be licensed.

?I applaud PetSmart Charities for investing in Jersey City and the hard work of the Bureau of Animal Control for recognizing the considerable benefits healthy pets provide for our residents? quality of life,? said Mayor Healy. ?We understand that many people are struggling, and that is why sought private funding to help our pet owners who may be facing difficult times. Our goal and PetSmart?s goal is to provide owners with the opportunity of keeping their pets rather than surrendering them to a shelter or abandoning them on the streets.?

The Humane Society estimates between three and four million cats and dogs are euthanized each year and that 25 percent of all pets in shelters are purebreds as opposed to mixes. In sharp contrast, US Pet Industry, consisting of, among other items, food, toys, and veterinary visits, contributed more than $50 billion to the national economy last year alone.

To make an appointment for your pet, or to see what low-cost services are available for your non-07305 zip code cat or dog, READ MORE HERE
