Okay... how did the reporter know that it was unattended cooking? From what I heard, the fire started in the microwave but they were not cooking. How did the reporter know that four adults were relocated? Only two adults live in that unit. Did the reporter know if there were any pets? A dog was rescued by the firemen out the balcony and down a ladder. Would the New York Times say Pier House Condos or Pier House Condominiums?

On a side note, make sure you have apartment or condominium insurance.

Jersey City fire official says water damages fourth-floor waterfront condo, other units when sprinker system tripped by kitchen fire won't shut off

Published: Friday, October 07, 2011, 3:00 AM
By Kate Kowsh/The Jersey Journal

A sprinkler system tripped by an unattended cooking fire in a fourth-floor condominium caused water damage to at least four other condo units beneath it and forced one downtown Jersey City family to relocate last night, fire officials said.

?It actually caused damage to every apartment on the line, going down to the first floor,? Fire Director Armando Roman said. ?It was more water than fire damage.?

Fire officials were alerted at 4:39 p.m. to fire at the Pier House Condos, 15 Warren St., and arrived four minutes later, Roman said.

?The sprinkler took care of most of the fire. However, for some reason or another the building maintenance workers were not able to shut the water off,? Roman said. ?That unfortunately caused more damage in the apartment.?

Four adults and two children who live in the fourth-floor condo where the fire originated were assisted by the Red Cross in relocating.

No injuries were reported, as the blaze was under control by 5:12 p.m., and firefighters left the scene by 6:18 p.m., Roman said.
