What makes you say that ?? Can you provide details on the license requirements ? Finally a venue that supports the folk music circuit and you to find a way to knock it. The have some pretty good acts I hope you at least tried it out it is a sensational place and you have to get an earfull of the accoustics there. If you listen to WFUV 90.7 Fit will give you an insight on the folk music scene in the Nyc FM metroploitan area, including the Brennan.

The best view is from the 4th flr if you know how to get up there (discretely). tonight, she covered Julie Miller (x 2), Leonard Cohen, Johnny Cash and even did a ballsy ad-lib version of Thunder Road as an encore - but for $20, I didn't get enough of the 'free' wine.

Fukcing with the u/c's at Larry and Joes after was fun, tho.

Lucy Kaplansky is an amazing live performer -- wish I could go and see her tonight but can't find a babysitter :(.
She's also an interesting person -- after some solid success in the music business she left the industry, pursued a doctorate and began a practice in psychology. Guess this is why her music is so insightful (and beautiful).
Highly recommend going to check her out to anyone looking for something to do (and the tix are very affordable).
Ten Year Night is one of her best songs.

Folk star Ellis Paul to play Coffee House in Jersey City

nj.com
Friday, June 19, 2009
By JENNIFER KIM
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

http://www.nj.com/news/jjournal/jerse ... 24539271394550.xml&coll=3

Folk star Ellis Paul takes center stage at the Brennan Coffee House in Jersey City tonight.
The 7:30 p.m. performance in the lobby of the Brennan Court House in Jersey City has all the makings of a special one, organizers said.
"For someone who has never been to a show and I had to choose one show for them to attend, it would be this one," said Hudson County Executive Thomas DeGise, the music lover who started the Coffee House seven years ago. "His songs are beautiful and poignant."
A leading voice in the folk revival of the '90s, Paul has been the recipient of 13 Boston Music Awards, and his songs have been featured in the films "Shallow Hal" and "Me, Myself and Irene," as well as on the TV series "Ed." Paul also produced his newest album, "The Day After Everything Ended."
According to Paul, a good song takes the listener on a journey.
"As long as the music is beautiful and smart, it's going to do well," Paul said. "I hope people will get lost in the songs - take them on a little trip like reading a good book or watching a good movie."
This will be Paul's third appearance at the Coffee House.
"I'll come anytime if they ask me again," he said. "It's a beautiful place to perform. The sound is great."
DeGise couldn't agree more. "The rotunda without a doubt is the most beautiful room in Hudson County," he said.
DeGise said he's currently pursuing Richie Havens - a Jersey City native who played Woodstock - for a future performance.
An open-mic will be featured at the end of tonight's show and coffee, wine and desserts will be served. Free parking is available in front of the court house.
With only nine performances per year for their songwriter/acoustic/folk music series, tonight's performance will be the last until September.
For more information, call the Brennan Coffee House at (800) 542-7894 or visit them on-line at www.brennancoffeehouse.com.

Thanks, Urban, for the post, and everyone else for the additional info. I saw a playback of one of the past events (Debi Smith with Red Molly) on a public access channel, but didn't know what the venue was. It was very frustrating, as Red Molly was excellent, and I could barely make out the name of the group from the video, much less where they were playing. Now I can buy their CD.

It's great to know about this now. I'll be sure to attend one of the upcoming gigs.

Yes - The Brennan Coffeehouse is one of the top arts events in the county. And I'm always surprised when people haven't heard of it.

County Executive Tom DeGise started the series a few years ago as a way to utilize the beautiful Rotunda at the Court House for arts and music. I don't know how they do it - but he and his staff at the Cultural Affairs Department always seem to book the biggest names in Folk and Acoustic music.

They draw audiences from NY, CT and as far away as PA.

I highly recommend it. It's just a really cool evening of some very very good music.

Tonight's coffee house folk music show will be Jesse Winchester held under the Teddy Conrad rotunda starting at 7:30 pm. Sit down at one of the tables sipping wine, water, coffee or tea and some edible goodies. There will be a $15 charge. The venue is located at the S/W corner of Newark & Baldwin Avenues across from the Mc Donalds just a few blocks from the JSQ PATH.

I planned to check out the Brennan Coffee House performance by folk artist Antje Duvekot earlier this month, but I missed it because I was out of town.

Did any JCListers out there make it to the show? Or have any of you checked out past Brennan Coffee House performances? Just curious to know what they're like.

I was there and Anjte's performance was wonderful. I love the atmosphere there, just like a 60's coffee house. Being held under the Teddy Conrad Rotunda with painted angels cascading on the ceiling like the Sistine Chapel and the black draped entrances fortressing round tables and chairs feel just right the acoustics are excellent. Having wine, water, coffee, & tea with homemade snacks for a dollar donation completes the setting. Parking is terrific you can use the courthouse lot or park on the street meters are not in effect after 6 pm. After the show is over the open mic segment begins. Thank your county executive Tom DeGise he's a big fan of folk music. I saw Jonathan Edwards, and Tom Rush there just to mention a few. I'll see you there Friday June 20th for the next gig.
