Jersey pol smells lawsuit in stink flap

DON SINGLETON -- NEW YORK DAILY NEWS -- JAN 13

A New Jersey politician is sick and tired of the Garden State being made the butt of jokes from across the Hudson - and now he's talking lawsuit.

"We should sue them, and sue them bad," Assemblyman Louis Manzo, a Jersey City Democrat, huffed yesterday as he recalled the many slights New Jersey has suffered, largely from New Yorkers.

What pushed Manzo over the edge, he said, was all the finger-pointing at New Jersey during Monday's Big Stink. When the mysterious odor enveloped lower Manhattan, it was promptly blamed on New Jersey.

"What we ought to do is sue New York for all the environmental damage they've done over the years - all the New York garbage that was dumped illegally in our state, all the environmental damage," he said.

The idea of suing New York started out as a joke, Manzo admitted. "But now people are saying it's a good idea."

The indignities include ancient myths of "Jersey mosquitoes" the size of sparrows, smelly pig farms in Secaucus and gangland burials in the Meadowlands.

"They ought to take a look at Secaucus today - it's clean and beautiful," Manzo said. "Just about the only stinky thing over that way lately was [New York Giants head coach Tom] Coughlin's play calling last weekend."

I thought that we should send a note to Mike Bloomberg telling him that in the future when Hudson County asks NYC to pull its finger they shouldn't. Ha, ha, it would be as effective and less costly than some politician's pandering, silly, lawsuit.

It's simple: when that foul smell showed up, NYC and NJ should have had a little pow-wow and . . . .

. . . . pointed their fingers at Staten Island!

Does Manzo know what he is talking about?

NJ can't sue NYC for anything -- can it?

Manzo: Sue nose off NYC for years of dumping on us

Jersey Journal -- Jan 11

Incensed over New York City's insistence that New Jersey was to blame for the foul odor

Louis M. Manzo said

"We should sue them, and sue them bad,"

"New York City officials shouldn't be casting fingers of blame, they should be issuing apologies and paying compensation for the environmental problems they exacted upon New Jersey for decades,"

"New York City has looked upon New Jersey as their dumping ground for generations. As the recent smell episode underscores, New Yorkers are still dumping on our fair state."

"Maybe New York should be called the Rotten Apple instead of the Big Apple"

"Maybe New York officials should be reminded of the old maxim: "Ye who smelt it, dealt it."

Manzo: Sue nose off NYC for years of dumping on us

Jersey Journal -- Jan 11

Incensed over New York City's insistence that New Jersey was to blame for the foul odor that wafted across Manhattan and much of Hudson County on Monday, Assemblyman Louis M. Manzo yesterday said New Jersey should return fire and teach the city a lesson it will never forget - with a lawsuit.

Manzo, D-Hudson, said New Jersey should go to court and seek reparations for the environmental harm that New York City exacted upon the Garden State during much of the past century when New Jersey served as a dumping ground for the city's garbage. "We should sue them, and sue them bad," Manzo said.

"New York City officials shouldn't be casting fingers of blame, they should be issuing apologies and paying compensation for the environmental problems they exacted upon New Jersey for decades," said Manzo. "New York City has looked upon New Jersey as their dumping ground for generations. As the recent smell episode underscores, New Yorkers are still dumping on our fair state."

Manzo said it was the height of hypocrisy for New York City officials to blame New Jersey for Monday's odor outbreak in Manhattan and Jersey City that sent emergency service workers scrambling and caused shutdowns of mass transit lines.

"Maybe New York should be called the Rotten Apple instead of the Big Apple," Manzo said.

"Maybe New York officials should be reminded of the old maxim: "Ye who smelt it, dealt it."
