Whatever you do , do not use TADCO! They are more expensive than anyone else and they don't know what they are doing.

Thanks so much for the information (old and new). Hope all goes well as this is the last hurdle prior to closing (or so we would like to believe).

It's usually 2 different firms/contractors. I used the following 5+ years ago:

Testing: Advanced Tank Services, Sparta NJ, 800-440-8265. We only did computerized accoustical testing, but I believe they offer soil sample testing as well, but it's likely more expensive.

Our tank passed, but we abandoned it a couple years later due to a change to gas heat.

Abandonment: US Tanks, Howell NJ, 732-961-2057. They specialize in foam fills, which is cheaper and less disruptive than removal, and has an advantage over sand filling in that if you do have to remove the tank later, it won't weigh a ton because it's filled with lightweight foam, not heavy sand.

Even if you're keeping oil heat, you should abandon the tank and put a new one in your basement. Sooner or later, all underground metal tanks fail. And as fellow jslist user 'worm' can tell you, it's very, very expensive when that happens.

We are looking for an engineer/contractor of good reputation with experience in Jersey City to inspect an in ground oil tank and if necessary, decommission it. Any recommendations pro or con are greatly appreciated.

We did a foam fill a couple years back with US Tanks out of Howell, NJ (732-961-2057). 1000 gallon underground tank was $1200 including permit, plus $120 to pump out any quantity of old oil -- required if more than 2" of oil is in the tank.

I do not like to bad mouth companies unless their behavior is completely despicable. That being said, I would strongly NOT RECOMMEND ANCO environmental. Be careful when choosing a oil remediation company. I ended up spending over 30,000 to remediate my tank and after nearly two years, I am still awaiting for the proper paperwork which verifies that I had the work performed properly. Without it, you cannot sell your house and the NJDEP might require further action which could potentially mean digging up the site again. Look into seeing if there are companies which will do a foam fill as opposed to a sand fill and check for companies that are registered with the "clean star"( i think that's what it's called) program.

Try A-1 at 973 672 4525 or American Tank at 973 678 6108. It should cost inside of $1500 as long as it is a 550 gallon or smaller tank, does not have a leak, and is easily accessable. Also, there may be aaditional charges if it has to be emptied.

Can anyone recommend someone to decommission our old heating oil tank? We recently switched over to nat gas.
