Terrence T. McDonald | The Jersey Journal

Residents in three neighborhoods will soon begin to test a new alert system that will notify them about crime trends in their communities and offer recommendations for how to avoid becoming victims.

The alert system, set for a limited release this fall in anticipation of a citywide launch once all the kinks are worked out, will allow users to receive text or email messages about crime trends in South Greenville, Paulus Hook and the neighborhood around Bayside Park.

The Historic Paulus Hook Association received a presentation yesterday from a group on new technology aimed at providing residents with intelligent and timely analysis of crime statistics, as well as crime alerts.

"(The system) will give users the information they want in a format that is more readable and more current,? James Solomon of Open JC told HPHA members in the basement of a Downtown church last night.

Solomon said people will be able to use the system online at no cost and it will potentially include maps, information on crime spikes, alerts to residents and other crime data. He said he hopes ?police will like it because they will see the community is more involved.?

The group is working with the police department to create a stream of data to feed the program. It is also working with the city, which asked Open JC if it could ?use the crime statistics in a way that informs and engages the community,? Solomon said.

Currently, Open JC is working with the HPHA, Bayside Park Neighborhood Association and the South Greenville Neighborhood Association as it creates the first version of the program. Members of those groups have been asked to fill out questionnaires that will provide Open JC with guidance on what they would like the system to provide.

Bayside Park Neighborhood Association & I believe Paulas Hook. In order to be involved I guess you would have to live in one of these two areas. I know that Lincoln Park neighborhood was also in the running but not enough people from the area showed up to the first meeting.

Bayside Park has about 40 residents that use a group text message service to keep each residents in the know of what is happening with crime, potholes, loitering etc in the area.

Each block is assigned a look out person who monitors the area and when something happens a text is sent to the 40 residents in the area and then is followed up with the police. Google was most impressed by this and that is why I believe we were chosen. If this app is successful I imagine it will spread out to all areas.

That is really really cool!

The South Greenville Neighborhood Association is also involved with this project. Our association covers the blocks between Cator, Merrit, Romar and Princeton.

Awesome!

After meeting with several block associations Google Ideas and Open JC has decided to work with the Bayside Park Neighborhood to develop and test their crime application concept.

We will be having a community meeting on the evening of August 13th with Google Ideas and Open JC. We are going to have an opportunity to be the first community in the country to test out this program which will be a much more sophisticated version of the text group we currently use.
