Jersey City and Newark are among the country's worst major cities to start a business, according to a report released yesterday by WalletHub, a personal finance social network.

Newark was ranked dead last among the 150 largest cities in terms of entrepreneurial opportunity in the nation.

Jersey City was ranked No. 142.

The top city in the nation for starting a business is Jacksonville, Fla., followed by Fayetteville, N.C., and Augusta, Ga.

WalletHub's findings were based on 14 measures that include access to financing, cost of living and educational background of the labor force.

Jersey City ranks 149th in employee availability, 141st in lowest corporate taxes, 141st in cheapest office space and 129th in lowest average salary, officials said.

"Our administration just took office, and we agree with the (report) there are many changes that need to be made," Jersey City spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill said. "We have a team working to improve this very issue and are already seeing progress as more and more companies are looking to bring their business here."

Morrill said that within the past few months, Forbes and Nautica have announced they are bringing hundreds of jobs to Jersey City.

Ontario, Calif. was ranked just above Jersey City. Some of the cities worse than Jersey City, but ranked above Newark, include Seattle, Wash., Glendale, Calif., and Providence, R.I.
