If they are from another energy company .. then OK, it's the usual energy scammers making their rounds.
However, I'm more concerned if this is just a robbery set-up that has also popped up periodically. The scammers are usually not so insistent on coming into the house and usually they do have some type of ID -- also don't remember if they travel in pairs.

Too often, this type of set up results in the home owner being asked to get something from another room (old bills, etc..), while the pair pocket what they can ... or worse.

If they do come back, I would urge you to call the police. Warn your neighbors not to let them in. Unfortunately, "T'is the season".

Out of curiosity, what area do you live in?

Try and find out what company they claim to "represent" and post it on here. Then I can see if that company is even properly registered to do business in New Jersey.

MxEnergy, one of the notorious ones from last year for example is not. Constellation Energy, on the other hand, was smart enough to do the necessary paperwork. A company not being registered in the state is one more thing that can be mentioned to law enforcement and the state utilities commission.

If I'm understanding your statement correctly, along with the rest of the responses, I imagine these guys get some nice payout to switch. But, it's a numbers game. If this is legal, they need some serious training and a better approach to lead to better conversions.

Now get off my lawn!

Door buzzer. "New Jersey Gas and Electric."
Let him in, for lulz.
Same binder, same cover sheet, "Oh, is that my bill?"
3x he repleated he was from/worked 'for the State,' had a crummy ID badge.
Poorly trained, his rap was loose, babbling about overcharges, rebates, intra-state taxes vs. in-state.
Escorted him out, poor puppy dog looking at the other apt's doors. "Sorry, he's not home, nope, they're not home."
Out the foyer, he was still trying, gave me one last feeble line, then tried working the outside buzzers while I glared at him.
2nd floor lady shut him down hard.
No different than Jehovah's, really.

(what the heck did they see, anyway?)

I just hope these companies would stop calling me. In the last year, I had said NO to every single call that says they would offer me a rebate, but they keep calling. Most of the time, with an attitude that is very clear even over the phone.

I already have my phone number on DO NOT call lists, but they keep calling. Is that legal???

There was someone standing next to her (out of my view) and didn't announce herself. She also made it a point to come over the threshold uninvited. Very suspicious. No id.

She was a young black woman (22-25) in a light coat and a colored winter hat.

Aha! Well it's that time of year again - those ridiculous 3rd party energy resellers that always seem to come around in the wintertime and claim they can save you money on your utility bills. They especially like to pray on the elderly and ignorant, and generally go to the townhouses and duplexes, because any condo or apartment building that has a concierge would ever let them in. They have no identification, no business cards, no pamphlets to give out and simply write their information down on a scrap of paper. Very unprofessional and I would never buy from someone like that. Sounds like you were smart about it too. The next time it happens, I'd get the name of the "company" they claim to represent, look up the company's website and give that company a call to tell them you don't want them around your neighborhood.

Most of these 3rd party resellers aren't even properly registered to do business in New Jersey - they think they don't have to be because their salespeople (like the woman that came to your door) are all independent contractors, but the fact is, if they want to collect money from you on a utility bill, they must be registered do business in the state. I'd mention that on the phone call too. It worked with the ones that came to my door a few years ago.
