HOBOKEN A 63-year-old Jersey City man who was arrested after admitting he beat a 68-year-old Hoboken man with a mop handle claims the man he beat was a loan shark who threatened him with a hunting knife over an unpaid debt, police reports said.
James Ladson, 63, of Hoboken Avenue in Jersey City, was charged with aggravated assault, criminal mischief and possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, reports said.
Police were called to Jackson and Third streets Monday at 3 p.m. on the report that a man had assaulted another man and was hitting parked cars with a large stick, reports said.
Ladson admitted that he had been involved in a fight, but said he had defended himself from an angry loan shark. Police searched the area but were unable to find the knife or the mop handle, police said.
