It was the culture of the time. Jersey City did have its pockets of diversity but everyone was segregated in their own little community.

And from the looks of this video, only white people lived in JC back then. With a few "ethincs" mixed in sporadically.

I had to laugh when I read this only because there is a lot of truth. Curry's Woods, Duncan Projects, Marion all were testaments to that era, the first two gone & the third, oh well. The Administration Bldg on Newark is a reminder of the "What the hell were they thinking" style that was considered beautiful at that time.

The public library has an interesting set of photos of the city that were taken in 1964, roughly when that video was done. It's an aerial survey of the city done for planning purposes. The Newport area, for example, was railroad yards serving active docks.

Of all the sparkling new projects touted in that film, is there any surviving that is not considered a blight upon the land?

Mayor Whelan went to prison for kickback schemes involving those projects shown in the video.

Good lord they designed some really ugly buildings back in the 60's. Not just ugly, but cold, utilitarian, bleak, Soviet-esque ugly.
The part about "new two families" they showcased the development that was done one block from my place. I keep hoping someone will buy the entire lot, tear them down, and build something that looks a lot better.

Pretty good video.
I wonder what it would look like if they tried to remake the video now. Soo much has changed. I guess that shipping yard is where newport area is now?

Political Insider: Fewer undecideds in upcoming Jersey City election as campaigns dig in By Agustin C. Torres/The Jersey Journal on April 20, 2013 at 12:01 AM Yesterday, I wrote about the negative campaigning by the Jersey City front-runners for mayor, incumbent Jerramiah Healy and Downtown Councilman Steven Fulop. What is missing is why, technically speaking, this approach is taken? ..... -- For those of you who have lasted this long, here is a look back at a Jersey City politician promising the future to city residents. See how many businesses and buildings you can recognize. ..... Full JJ piece with video at the end? http://www.nj.com/hudson/voices/index ... _undeci.html#incart_river (has a bit about the Henderson Street urban renewal (Bayonne type houses) . The Hudson Mall was a strip mall it is the building with the steel beam squares on roof in the video. Ice skating down Roosevelt Stadium. The ?fancy? Captain?s Table restaurant down at the Roosevelt Marina. Funny how it talks about attracting "newcomers" to the city.)
