33rd Street bound train to 14th Street, Brooklyn bound L train to Union Square, where you can catch the 4, 5, & 6. Uptown 4 to Grand Central is the best bet, then transfer to the 6 to 68th Street. 59th Street is different levels as someone else has mentioned, so if you get stuck behind a slow walker on the steps, you'll probably miss the train..

Same line, different track. The 4 & 5 share the express track in Manhattan and the 6 is on the local, except if there is construction. Grand Central, Union Square and Brooklyn Bridge City Hall have a real easy transfer across the platform. At 59th Street, the tracks are on different levels and transferring means moving up or down between levels.

I'm at Hunter - 68th and Lex several days a week. I take whatever train that comes first, but prefer 33 in the winter. At 33rd walk to the right and find the N or R uptown. Get off at 59th and get the uptown 6 one stop. You are inside the whole trip. If you have the time, exit 68th via SE corner (they are marked) and you can take the crosstown bus to York. It might be faster to walk, however. I get on the train at about 10am - can't speak to how crowded one line is compared to another earlier which might influence your route. bon voyage

If you are traveling during the weekend then you can catch the 6 at 33rd and Park like you had thought....

Yes sir! I only use the Path at Exchange, from the southern part of JC to Exchange is 14 min and 7 min on the Path from EP to WTC

Too many folks were hating on my balcony, so I took it down. :) safe travels.

The 6 runs on the same track, right? I just step off and wait for the 6? (I'm now working for a construction company in NYC so I'm sure I'll be a wizard at this in no time.)

Yes. Its open 5 days a week, but is closed from 10pm friday until Monday at 6am.

Exchange place to anything that says World Trade or WTC.

At Fulton Street take the 4 or 5 as far as Grand Central, transfer to the 6 there.

Yes, with the exception of after 10 pm Friday until 5 am Monday. It looks like both those stops will continue to be closed on weekends through February.

Am I correct that I now need to take the PATH to 33rd St and then walk to Park Ave and catch the 5 train from there?

No.

Alternatives:

If the WTC PATH is closed, take the train to 14th and pick up the 6 at Union Square (or 4,5 at Union Square and transfer to the 6 at Grand Central). 14th is a nominally shorter distance than 33rd Street to the 6 train at 33rd. The grid expands ever so slightly as you move north at this point.

Or take the F from 14th to 63rd Street, which might actually be the fastest route.
