I qualified my comment being specific to tank heaters, but since tankless are even more efficient, I'd be surprised if they spill enough heat to cause a spray can to explode. I'm pretty sure you could put a can next to the vent of boiler and not get it to explode, a lot of thought has been put into the safety of these devices. If the heater was malfunctioning, all bets are off, but that isn't what was said.

Not buying it. Tank water heaters are coded for almost no clearance, they do not radiate perceptible heat, that would be inefficient. Even leaving it on top next to the draft hood wouldn't heat it much.

It was the solution to one problem, and unfortunately, the cause of another.
A Jersey City apartment was damaged when a bug spray can overheated, exploded and caused a fire Monday evening, officials said. Firefighters responding to the six-family building at 125 Brunswick St., on a 4:59 p.m. alarm found a can of bug spray left too close to a hot water heater had exploded, Fire Director Armando Roman said. Firefighters put out the fire quickly, but not before the flames damaged the kitchen area, Roman said, adding that the rest of the apartment suffered moderate smoke and water damage.
