Jersey City police are looking into allegations that a police officer assaulted a civilian employee of the police department at a Downtown bar after a Christmas party last month, officials said today.
A spokesman for the Police Chief's office confirmed this morning that the department's internal affairs unit is looking into the matter that allegedly occurred in the Powerhouse Lounge on Dec. 6. A source told The Jersey Journal that officers attending a police Christmas party on Dec. 6 later went to the Marin Boulevard bar where an officer allegedly struck the victim over the head with a bottle. Police confirmed the allegation today. Police would not release the name of the officer and would not release the police report, saying the matter remains under investigation. The officer being investigated has not been suspended, pending the outcome of the investigation. The officer at the center of the investigation was in an undercover unit, has since been transferred and is back in uniform, police confirmed. He has since gone out on sick leave, police confirmed. The spokesman for the chief's office said there were no serious injuries in the incident.JJ
