This man was actually from Bergen Lafayette, not Greenville. Whiton Street is located in the Bergen Lafayette area near LSP.

Cops: Jersey City man, 23, shoots at police, wounded in arms and legs

Monday, January 23, 2012, 3:00 AM
By Charles Hack/The Jersey Journal

A 23-year-old Jersey City man was shot multiple times by police officers around midnight Friday after he fired at two cops and then ignored police orders to drop the weapon, an official said yesterday.

Shortly before midnight, police responded to reports of a young man standing at the corner of Bergen and Virginia avenues pointing a pistol at passing cars, Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said.

When two officers got out of their marked police car, Grant Franklin, 23, of Whiton Street, fired two shots at them, DeFazio said.

The officers called for backup and several uniformed and plainclothes cops responded, he said.

The officers saw Franklin on a sidewalk on Virginia Avenue and ordered him to drop the weapon, DeFazio said.
Instead, Franklin raised up the gun and four officers fired at him, shooting him multiple times in the arms and legs, DeFazio said.

Franklin was taken to Jersey City Medical Center and was listed in a stable condition, according to reports.
The High Point 9mm semi-pistol Franklin was carrying was recovered at the scene, said DeFazio, whose office will investigate the shooting along with Jersey City Police Department Internal Affairs. The gun had a defaced serial number, he said.

DeFazio said no motive has been established for Franklin?s behavior, but authorities are investigating whether he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time.
?Preliminarily this appears to be a justified use of force by the responding officers,? DeFazio said. ?Obviously it was very intense situation. The defendant had allegedly taken two shots at the first responding unit. This was a dangerous and volatile situation.?

Jersey City Police Lt. Edgar Martinez said last night the officers who fired their weapons are receiving post-traumatic stress counseling. Officials didn?t say yesterday how many shots cops fired, or how many hit the suspect.
Franklin is charged with four counts of attempted murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon unlawful purposes, possession of a defaced fire arm, police reports said.
